I'm surprised that umpires aren't harsher on fend offs.  If you choose to commit an arm to fending off rather than trying to keep it free to handball or handballing immediately, I reckon you've had your prior opp.  If you don't get the ball to foot, then the whistle should blow.  The obvious risk to attempting the fend off is that your arm will be held and handballling will become impossible.

Zed, it all comes down to whether the player with the ball had a prior opportunity.  If not, then no free kick is paid if he makes a genuine attempt to dispose of it legally.

With the Waite/Rance one, the umpire's comment that he made an attempt means the umpire thought Rance had no prior opportunity.  Umpires can't be expected to deliver full reasons in the manner of judges.  They use key words.
That said, I reckon the umpire got that one wrong.  Rance tried to break the tackle when he was held by the wrist and took a couple of steps instead of immediately kicking.  But it was debatable.

Not a huge fan of show boatting, but the slight show fo the ball to the Richmond bloke just before he launched it was awesome...
Might it have been attention to detail rather than showboating?  Wasting time when you're in front is important, and if the Tigers had given up the chase he could have waited until they realised their mistake.  As it was, he could see that they were still coming and sealed the deal.  North doesn't have the composure to consolidate the lead late in the game, and that hurt them badly this year.

Casboult will come in only if Kruezer has an injury. I thought MK was critical yesterday in allowing Carlton to dominate the rucks in the 2nd half which helped the likes of Judd, Murphy & Gibbs dominate the mid-field battle. I actually thought he was the strength in the early part of the last quarter that pressed home our third quarter advantage.

To paraphrase Kerry Packer, 'You only get one Tyrone Vickery in your life, and he's had his'.  :P

Looks like the ABC was right regarding Brock, though - this is what the Hun reports MM said about his late withdrawal:
Quote
Malthouse revealed post-match Duigan was only in the side after Brock McLean's thigh gave way with the last kick of the warm-up.

''Well, Nick played very well. Brock's decision was very late. It was the last kick of the warm-up and we are lucky it wasn't the first kick of the game. It was a great effort by Nick Duigan but let's not confuse ourselves, players get prepared to play. I wouldn't be disappointed if any emergency wasn't prepared to play.''

They can believe in little green men and the Loch Ness Monster if they choose, but I couldn't care less.  It only has any value as a jibe if we reveal any sensitivity to it.  Let them try to explain why drug cheats shouldn't be simply rubbed out of the reckoning as happens in every sport.

So what's the washup for the Swans and Blues?

Swans:
  • McVeigh - knee injury?  The Age reported that he was walking without any discomfort on Saturday.
  • Bolton looked a bit proppy after a smother, but there probably isn't much to that.
  • The best thing about Friday night was that the 4 guys coming back from injury (Rohan, Hanneberry, Tippett, and Jetta) had such indifferent form that the Swans may be loathe to run the same risk with Goodes and LRT.

Blues:
  • Kreuzer - is the foot injury as bad as suggested by some commentators?
  • Brock - on the ABC radio broadcast, there was a suggestion that he did his quad again when taking the last kick of the warm-up, while the Ch 7 commentary suggested McLean pulled out because he felt that he wasn't fully happy with how the leg was feeling.  If the latter is the more accurate report, then maybe he can return, but if the former is correct then he's done.
  • On the positive side, as long as Juddy pulls up okay from the game, another 6 days should see him near full fitness - when he plays the Swans, the injury will be 4 weeks in the past and the usual recovery time is about 6 weeks.  Scotto got through without a hiccup, so he too should be pretty right.

The "don't deserve to be there" argument never had any legs to it IMO.  Let's face it, Essendon were excluded from the finals for being drug cheats.  Yes, the AFL allowed the Scum to pare down the chargesheet, but for their supporters to argue that they weren't done for drugs because of what their club pleaded guilty to is like Melbourne supporters arguing that they were found not guilty of tanking.  The penalties in both cases tell the tale.

Nobody suggests that an athlete who wins after a competitor is rubbed out for drug cheating didn't deserve to win.

The stakes are higher after the Swans were plucked.  Biggest loss under Longmire.  Maybe McVeigh injured, and a few of their guys were exposed for their lack of preparation - Rohan, Hanneberry, and Jetta.  That was a bit of a warning shot were the Swans considering bringing back Goodes and LRT.  A preliminary final may well be on the line on Sunday.

Don't under estimate M Williams there, he will know exactly what is involved as a coach and mentor.
Let's not forget that Choco coached Port to the biggest loss in a VFL/AFL GF - not bad given that the league is over a 100 years old.  What does it say about your ability to get a side up for a final if your side is smashed from the start and ends up losing by 119 points?  Given that they won the PF by 87 points, that's a massive 206 point turnaround in the GF!!!!!!!

The Sports Desk / Re: NFL starts tomorrow!
Big game from Peyton Manning today.  Was it 7 TD passes - he's now one of only a handful of guys to do that. Wes Welker and the 2 Thomases got 2 each.  Pretty good having 2 receivers measuring 6'3 and 6'5".

The most ridiculous error was committed by a first-game player name Trevathan who did well to get inside Ray Rice and pick off a throw from Flacco, and strolled into the end zone.  But just before he crossed into it, he let the ball go as he started a premature celebration.  He lost a pick-6, and then injury was added to insult to injury - the ball rolled out of the end zone for a touchback and one of the Bronco's star defenders was injured as he tried to dive on the ball before it rolled out of the end zone.

What the hell is it with these guys who can't figure out that the fat paychecks require them to have a modicum of discipline.  It's not as though College football doesn't prepare them for this.  Touchdowns are commonly negated because of celebrations and also for dropping the ball short of the end zone.  If that had been me, they would have needed a scalpel to cut the ball away from my hands well after I walked over to the bench.

Matthew White's omission through injury will be a setback for them.  Not sure that Titch Edwards fills the hole.

Our last game revealed that Army is a great match-up for Ellis who can carve teams up.  Always good to have one match-up already done and dusted.
