Robert Heatley Stand / Re: RD 5 - Western Bulldogs vs Carlton (Prematch)
We are desperate for a win - team selection will reflect trying to achieve that rather than worrying too much about player development It's all driven by membership numbers atm.

True Cookie, but wouldn't that require picking the best 22 rather than hoping that the 22 picked will perform at their best rather than how their current form suggests.  On form, White, Bell and McLean would have to be considered, along with the mighty Judd.

Those changes make good sense.

Can't agree Baggers  ???

McLean busted his gut, Waite, Watson and Garlett did nothing in the NBs.  Graham needs a couple of games to pick up the tempo and show what he can do.  I guess we're so desperate for a win that we can't afford to give the lad a decent go.

Obviously very happy to see Judd back and I don't really know why Bell was dropped.

I suppose the Match Committee see things differently and that's why they're the Match Committee and I'm a supporter . . . and we're 0 and 4  >:(

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Stand by Tuohy
Martin is a super talented player I think you'd find he'd beat most of our defenders in that situation.

That's true.  I thought he would goal if he got his hands on the ball.  However, Tuohy just followed Martin rather than trying to beat him to the ball or take him out of the contest.  I'd back Carrazzo, Ellard, Cachia, Gibbs, etc to make it a lot harder for Martin.

I think Tuohy has been a great addition to our squad and I'm sure he'll go on to play many great games for the club.  The issue is that other clubs are using his opponent very effectively as a scoring option.  The fact that he has had lots of goals kicked on him will be affecting his confidence and making him even less likely to back himself in a contest.

I think we have to persevere with Tuohy in defence . . . but, we should move Walker forward and bring in a hard-nosed defender.

I gave him a vote.

He took a couple of intercept marks, had 11 1%ers, which for a defender is usually spoils. Did a good job which will be overlooked by most because it wasn't flashy or obvious.

Having said that, i'm not sure he'll survive down back because with his (lack of) speed/agility it limits the type of players he can actually handle.

Pretty close to my assessment Kruddler although I'm not really sure how he managed to take that mark in the one on one contest just outside the goal square.

I think he'll struggle against mobile forwards but will do OK against ruckmen trying to play as key forwards.

That probably sums him up well.

I think he would be better suited as a forward and back up ruckman but he's doing a job at the moment.  I'd like him to have more of a physical presence but I guess he's not Robinson Crusoe there.

Lots of WW1 and WW2 veterans in my family and they never spoke about 'sticking fat'.  It doesn't rate a mention in my copy of "The Australian Language" so I expect that it was introduced after that work was published - 1986.  It certainly isn't a phrase I heard before the early 2000s.

In fact, I've only ever heard it used by AFL folk  ::)

I really had thought Zac was some tough hombre, but in the Tigers game Dustin Martin just shrugged him away, gathered the contested ball and calmly slotted what I thought was the sealer, easy as you like. Poor old Zac was just nowhere in the contest - I figured there is something wrong with him, very uncharacteristic IMO.

I think that it's more about his ability to play one on one against opponents who have grown up playing the game.  In that contest with Martin, Tuohy was totally focused on Martin and didn't make the ball his object.  Opposition analysts will have identified Tuohy's weakness and will try to isolate him close to goal.

We really need a genuine defender who can win the one on one contests and get the ball to the likes of Tuohy, Walker and Yarran.

@Mants
Mate I feel your pain but MM is one year and 4 games into his contract. He has brought in 4 quality players this draft in Cripps, Daisy, Everitt and Docherty. Next draft maybe more than 4 which shall represent nearly 50% of our list in just 2 years.

Malthouse has done this before and figured in 7 Grand finals. Unlike Pagan he is now at the helm of his 4th club.

Give him another year.

No JK.  Malthouse was drafted in to provide what Ratten was judged incapable of; taking a promising playing group into the final four and winning a premiership.

The appointment of Malthouse is not really his fault, if you ignore his willingness to undermine a contracted coach and then deny any wrongdoing (not that he has a reputation for honesty).  It's symptomatic of a club that only achieved success in the recent past through bringing in saviours rather than doing the hard yards.

Four quality players in the draft?  That would be Cripps, who is promising but has a long way to go.  I suspect Giles may well be a better prospect, particularly with our fragile spine.

Everitt and Docherty were traded in and Thomas was acquired by paying overs through free agency.  The latter three may turn out OK but the jury is still out.  Who did Malthouse bring in hid first season?  Oh, that's right, he was too busy flogging his best selling book.

As a matter of interest, the turnover of our list at the end of 2013 was not that different to the turnover in previous seasons.

Very true, it was first used by Brittain and since then, the only one to use it again has been Sticks.

Needs to find some new vocabulary like "united" or "show some solidarity" or "commitment".

I used to cringe at some of our previous coach's abuses of the English language (but at least he didn't try to belittle reporters) and hoped the club would send him off to do a media relations and public speaking course.  I think it's too late for Sticks but please can his replacement be trained in phrases to avoid?

Of course we can win this one.  Mick just needs to give the team licence to play one on one footy, pick the team on form, and put some effort into getting them ready to play.

That may be asking a little too much of the coach but, if he's worth the money we're throwing at him, he should be able to get the job done.
