The Sports Desk / Re: Australian Cricket - Crisis, What Crisis ??
The poms will make 600 in this pitch, if it doesn't rain we could be down 350 runs with two days to go on a turning deck...They'll have to bat well in their second dig Prof . . . who'd have thought 8 for at tea
![Shocked :o](https://www.carltonsc.com/smileys/default/shocked.gif)
I think it shows that the Poms' batting is as brittle as ours.

The controlled aggression from both Haddin and Johnson looks to be the way to go against the Poms' attack.
Edit: Johnson didn't go on with it but a 50 is a 50.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Key Players 2014
For mine it's the bottom six to eight... get across the board improvement from the Casboults, Rowes, Watsons, Lucus', Bootsmas, Bells, Cachias and Whites ... with the arrival of the Buckleys, Grahams, Menzels, Dochertys and whoever we draft. This lot will, in many respects, determine how well we do in 2014.
Sorry Baggers but you've slipped in to footy speak; we only have one of each of the players you've mentioned.
You're right about the bottom 6-8 improving though. If we can achieve that, it will take so much pressure off the top 6-8 and make it so much harder for the opposition to keep our guns quiet.
Thomas, if fit, means that one of Murphy, Gibbs, Judd, McLean or Thomas himself will have the freedom to tear the opposition a new arsehole.
Rowe and/or Casboult stepping up gives us a genuine tall forward but the key to our success is Watson. If he can hold down CHB, the ability to use Henderson as a key forward or swingman will give other coaches nightmares.

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Abbott must go, arise Sir Malcolm!
At the risk of being hammered, The only PM (in my time) who has had a grasp on foreign policy was Paul Keating. Not ashamed to say I was and still am a huge fan of the man.
I'm on your side on this one DU. One of the few PMs who had a vision for the country that went beyond the next election.

K Rudd has just retired!!!
About bloody time.
I wish most of the others would get their snouts out of the trough and follow his lead.

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: Parenting & Discipline
My mother used the wooden spoon on her children from time to time and I'm sure we deserved it. My father went a little further; breaking an axe handle on one of my older brothers and a piece of 4 x 2 on me. I'm sure that he felt that we deserved it. In Dad's defence, he had a pretty tough upbringing himself and was probably suffering from post traumatic stress after his service in WW2.
All of my siblings are/were high achievers with a strong sense of right and wrong.
When I was at primary school, corporal punishment was not only acceptable but liberally applied. I think I held the record with 16 cuts in one day. However, when one teacher overstepped the mark, Dad took time off work to make sure that the headmaster understood that any punishment dished out to his children had to be fair.
I digress, but when my grandfather was unfairly punished at primary school, his older sister paid a visit and broke the teacher's nose.
I can remember giving my daughter a slap on the butt once but I don't think I ever hit my son. Both of my children are high achievers and they are passionate about social justice. I am extremely proud of them and proud that my parenting has helped to make them what they are.
Is it right to give your child a smack? Of course it is in the right circumstances and provided that it is absolutely necessary to stop unacceptable behaviour and not to assuage the parent's frustrations.
Is it right to physically (or emotionally) abuse your child? Under no circumstances! And that includes the use of wooden spoons, axe handles, lengths of 4 x 2, leather straps and anything other than an open hand intended to shock rather than hurt.

Blah-Blah Bar / Re: R.I.P Lou Reed
Lou Reed's live album "Rock And Roll Animal" - simply a classic.
Some of the stuff with VU is legendary too.
Yes, a real classic!
It's a sad loss but somewhat surprising that he lasted so long - must have had a similar constitution to Keith Richards.
RIP

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Who do you expect to have a breakout season in 2014?
Shaun Hampson will find his niche at Richmond and will become one of the AFL's best big men in 2014.

Execute them. It will stop any further discussion.

In fact, I couldn't ask for better children; both high achievers with well developed social consciences (not sure what I did right) but they both did the odd irresponsible thing when they were growing up.

The young person's behaviour, as an indicator of lack of remorse, may well have an impact on the severity of his penalty.
There have been calls for parents to be punished for the offences of their children but it would have to be on a case by case basis. From what you've described Sheik, the father deserves a whack.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: How 'over it' are you?
Strongly disagree Gozza. The second time we kicked ourselves out of it but the first they had players getting out the back and kicking goals as a result of having more run. That after we had them on toast when we were able to compete. We fell away they didnt.
PEDS. After seeing the way they came out in the second half vs Freo over at Pattersons, it became clear to me that they had a physical edge.
So after the whole thing blew up in February, they were still using alleged substances throughout the course of the season were they? That's a crock of sh1t.
The long term and lasting effects of PEDs are well known Gozza. We've been through this on the old board while you were AWOL.
Fair enough.
But - we led Essendon by 31 points midway through the third quarter in round 11. Surely even the long term effects of such things wouldn't just flick a switch like that.
In round 22, the Blues kicked 9.22.....that costs a game of footy every day of the week - absolutely nothing to do with PEDs at all.
Much easier to look for excuses though.
I suspect we were completely stuffed midway through the 3rd quarter in rd 11 - and we weren't the only team to get run down by the Cheats. If I remember correctly, we had a chance for another goal and fluffed it.
By round 22, the Cheats had pretty well come back to the field in terms of endurance and it was poor kicking for goal that cost us a game we should have won. They were let off the leash by Hird and played as if they had nothing to lose in the last quarter; something Malthouse should have anticipated and countered.

Wish this article was published a month ago, might've halved the length of the 2013 trade thread
