Robert Heatley Stand / Re: AFL Rd 20 2023 Post Game Prognostications Carlton vs Collingwood
This is the sort of game we have stuffed up in the past. The team has worked damn hard to get to the position where it's destiny is in there own hands and while we now probably only need to win two of the next four to make the finals, this sort of thinking is dangerous and could lead to complacency and thinking we can win another down the track if we don't win this one. Our mindset should be to win the next four in a row and then win another four after that.

Travelling home on the tram after the WCE game I was chatting to some Richmond supporters after asking them if they thought Richmond might finish ninth this year they asked how I thought we go against the Pies with all our injuries. I told them it wouldn't matter who we picked as long as they gave 100% we would be too good. My show of confidence confused them and made them think that Carlton was a big show this week. I wasn't really telling them, the truth but that is how the game panned out. A full strength Collingwood against an understrength Carlton but it didn't make any different.
It will be interesting how the narrative goes. The loss was good for Collingwood. If they had kicked straight the result may have been different. Carlton caught them unawares and they will be ready for this next time. Can the umpires give Collingwood even more rubbish free kicks. The big question for me is of the two teams who has the most room for improvement. Would Silvagni, Kennedy, McKay, Boyd and Cerra playing a complete match make us a better side or is there more improvement in Collingwood?
To me Collingwood have a lot of deliverers and finishers but not a lot of ball winners. They intercept mark and get the loose ball and then take off but they don't win the ball as such. Keep the game tight and don't give them the ball and because they in front of the ball you can get them on the rebound on turnover. Carlton has shown the blue print it will be interesting if other sides follow.
I thought that the team and intent was fabulous and the tackling was ferocious. My only concern was that Hollands and Kemp struggled against the size of their opponents but I do not question their endeavour.
We have to keep this mindset going. Carlton in the past could have beaten Collingwood and Port Adelaide and then go out and lose to St Kilda, Gold Coast and the Giants. Our destiny is in our own hands.

My view is that it doesn't matter who is in or out but how much intent we bring to the game. I am assuming that Cripps,  Cerra, Martin and Owies will be coming in with Silvagni, Walsh, Motlop, Dow and Honey going out. Young being the second ruckman. The one injury I am concerned with is Cincotta as we would need to replace him with Marchbank or Plowman which might unbalance our defence.

Our normal midfield is Cripps, Walsh, Cerra and Kennedy, after half time it was Hewitt,  Dow, Ed Curnow and Docherty. I think TDK has come back with real purpose and the pressure and endeavour is fantastic. There is a real physical presence about the team at the moment and our skills have picked up along with our teaming. Where was this earlier in the year? The turn around has been so great supporters are complaining about a twelve goal win which was our fifth 50 point win in a row. We have a real show against Collingwood if we show up with the same mindset we have had over the past five games. I am not sure it would matter who we have out on the ground though having Charlie Curnow is a big help. While watching Charlie today I was thinking about how different it was with Fev. Fev was the most exciting Carlton player I have seen over the sixty years I have been watching football but it really was all about him. Charlie appears to be about the team and the Club. He could be anything.

We are still only beating teams that are no good or riddled with injuries. No Pittonett, Kennedy, Williams or Owies and we lose McKay in the first ten minutes but Port were the team that was undermanned. I thought Dow had more impact on the game than Hewitt. We are a very good side when we play with intent and endeavour. We are in charge of our own destiny. We win four of six we get there. There is no reason why we can't win six of six. We just need to turn up with the same mindset that we have turned up with in the past four games. Finally,  winning is so much better than losing.

So Gold Coast, Hawthorn and Fremantle are no good. Richmond's stumbling victory over Sydney has them primed for finals while Carlton's run is too little too late even though we are ahead of Richmond on the ladder.
I am wary of Carlton but the performances have been very good over the past three matches. Our defence is solid and attacking, our midfield is dominating and our forward line is functioning and we have connection between the lines. We are attacking the ball with intent, we are tackling with our bodies and not just our arms, our small forwards are harassing and kicking goals, our no name defenders are dominating their opponents and our good players are playing up to their abilities.
Carlton has not improved in the second half of a season for 25 years and we haven't gone on a real run of victories for just as long. The rest of the season is a big opportunity starting with Port Adelaide next week.
Just a comment on the ruck situation. Big men should be trying to impose themselves on the match. The problem with Darcy was that everyone knew he would dominate the hit outs, which he did, but that is all he did. He needed to beat up Young and Silvagni which he didn't. In fact Carlton really got into him physically. McKay has become quite physical over the past few weeks and this has created a lot of opportunities for our smaller players. He was very physical with Darcy. If he can keep this up he will have a big say on the rest of this season.
