There's a theory that the strength of the 'bottom 6' of a team is the differentiator of teams. Another post somewhere had about 8 of our best 23 out. A real test of our depth. Given that many on the forum bemoan player development in the VFL, the current results aren't a surprise. The bottom 6 are better when playing alongside the genuinely best 17 as they contubute at their level. When the 6 becomes 12 is where the struggle is.
While the game wasn't great tonight, thought they fought ok - some basic skill errors lead to easy goals to Brisbane. We get ready shots and lack composure, or mental strength to make sure that we kick the goal. That hurts.
When Williams had the shot for goal in the last, I said to my son that he'll do a hammy. 2 minutes later he was on his own and looked as if he had - might have been cramp.
I am a little surprised at some of the strong comments about Friday night (I did end up watching most of it): - it wasn't a great side selected and going to lose by plenty. - there have been doubts for ages about Cripps', Weiters' fitness and chat about Curnow's. Leaving them out for who to come in? - Playing a heap of 'kids' at once doesn't do them favours if they have no guidance/not enough support on the ground - we continue to see this. - some players shake hands before a game. Charlie did the equivalent. What's the big deal? - one of our biggest weaknesses for a very long time has been player development. - we are not a highly skilled side and often miss (easy) targets. We play as if they are going to be hit, so find it hard to recover when the opposition pick us off. Lot of energy wasted trying to make amends. This is getting worse the deeper down the list we go, which has to affect morale and confidence. - we seem to try to get 'hail Mary' player selections. Doesn't pay off very often. - An issue of having (seemingly) highly paid top 6-8, is that the $$ are tighter further down, which will make it hard to attract enough quality players.
4/95 all out 138 - lead of 74. Cummins with 300 test wickets. 4 and a bit sessions in and 20 wickets gone. Not a great advertisement for the combatants to become World Test Champions.
It seems we also get comfortable with a lead and take the foot off. Essendon were horrible in the first qtr and bound to improve.
Didn't think we were in danger of losing, but got a lot closer than it should have. A couple of moments in the last - White & another player had space at our 50 - White's kick was smothered - goal to Essendon. Motlop an easy shot to go 23 up (I think) misses - goal to Essendon. Just a couple of moments where composure and knowing the importance of execution at that point were missing. Plenty of other egs they're just 2 when it mattered - although game shouldn't have got to that point.
Had it been first past the post in this election the results would have been pretty much the same as it has actually turned out. Labor would still have an absolute majority but a couple fewer seats. Libs would have a few more. Greens would have one and the independents (Teals Katter etc) around 7 or 8.
Not a lot of difference but a much simpler and more quickly declared poll
Thanks Lods - I should be working, but these trigger me, so I need to have a look...
In Vic, if it was first past the post, there would be 5 less ALP seats and 1 less Independent. These are replaced by first past the post - 5 LNP and 1 Greens. Give me a couple of days, and I am sure that I will need a distraction/procrastination tool to look at the other states! There was only one seat in Vic where first past the post got >50% of the vote.
First past the post doesn't get a majority representation:
eg: 34% vote LNP 33% vote Labor 33% vote other
LNP gets in, yet 66% of the people don't want them. Yes, it would change the way people vote (esp 33% other), but then there is little prospect of changing the 2 party system that we currently have.
Your example of preference voting is, as you pointed out also the benefit of preference voting in that you have ultimately got your preference, but you have told them that they have a lot of room to improve! The difference it makes is dependent on the politicians - not a lot of talent, so little difference.
AEC reckons about 5 weeks from the election for Calwell. With a 4 way count and 14 candidates, it's complicated. Also with scrutineers looking at everything vote, takes a lot of time.
Apparently with more people preferencing the majors, rather than voting directly for them this will happen more often.
Clogging up the game suited us. With the injuries, we weren't trying to play the manic game style that tires us out.
While there was a lot of pressure on us towards the end, there was heaps on the Saints and they didn't handle it as well. That team effort needs to be present consistently.
If only Motlop was a one touch player...Binns did well.
