I'm going to start it and say it.
Mark Murphy tried it but it just wasn't for him, not everybody is a leader. Some can and some can't.
The title has effected the way he plays and the way he is treated.
Kade Simpson plays like it is his last game and leaves everything out there and has a voice the others listen to.
Unfortunately Murph, you need to hand over the Captaincy for the betterment of the team.
This may have never happened before but Carlton is good at breaking records, MM just went 0-4 for the first time. ;)
Henderson for me.
but wouldn't say no to simmo
The only way we'll get a new captain is with a new coach.
It would be nice if we had a standout kid who would be an obvious choice.
Hate to say it but I called all of this shight from day one.
You did, you were right.
You are wrong about Hendo though..............................for now. ;)
I am afraid that Murphy must go as captain. It has seriously affected his form. He needs less pressure at the moment, not more.
Simmo or Carrots would be decent choices. I would not give the job to Hendo or Waite.
I've been reading up the various commentary across the footy forums and Marc Murphy has come under a stack of heat for his lack of leadership in his role as captain.
Some people believe he is the right man for the job whilst many others are of the opinion he shouldn't have been appointed in the first place.
The thing is, there is obviously something wrong with his captaincy right now and the team is completely bereft of decent leaders.
Therefore, I'm posing to everyone here, should the club make the bold move and change captains mid-season ??
If so, who should be made captain & for what length of time ??
Also, how would you envisage it being played out inside the club as well as back out to the media ??
I would wait until the end of the season. It doesn't help us at the moment to rip the Captaincy away from the lad. By the end of the year he will probably want to give it up.
the club doesn't have culture
rebuilding it doesn't or in this case wont come from one act.
The decision maker that anointed murphy as captain, needs to go first
May as well completely stuff him.
Although I agree that Murph is not a natural leader it would be really destabilising to him and the joint should he have it taken from him at this stage.
Problem is there is such a void of leadership at our club at present... and on-field blokes who can take a game by the throat, which top sides have.
Parko pointed out a couple of weeks ago that when he looks at our list he does not see one bloke who can take control of a game. Juddy could, but not any more (though he lifted the whole side in our winning final last year). He commented that top sides have at least 3 or 4 of these blokes who can take on a game.
Let him Captain the NB's ::)
I think that Murphy is so down at the moment that he wouldn't give a hoot about being stripped of the captaincy. It will probably be a relief. Its simple. Call 774 Grandstand, say "I am stepping down to concentrate on getting my football back on track"... don't need to say anything else. 24 hours later everybody will have forgotten about it.
Ridiculous. The whole group is introverted and mentally suspect. What difference is making someone else Captain going to make? The great man leadership style that you so crave featured in WWII and Napoleonic times. it is not so effective these days. Maybe it's not so much about leadership as followership? A concept where leadership is shared.
Isn't he on 700k or thereabouts?
i heard much more than that
Not doing his job properly so therefore needs to take a pay cut
Ok so Thomas and MM will take a cut too?!
Agree. Like your work, Jofonski.
There just aint a quick fix to our leadership woes. And wheeling out scapegoat Murphy to be burned at the stake won't achieve f*ck all.
We have serious leadership woes... all over the paddock.
Brave Sir Robin ran away.
("No!")
Bravely ran away away.
("I didn't!")
When danger reared it's ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
("no!")
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
("I didn't!")
And gallantly he chickened out.
****Bravely**** taking ("I never did!") to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat.
("all lies!")
Bravest of the braaaave, Sir Robin!
("I never!")
We've got a President who didn't want the job in the first place who's been in it for six or seven years, says it all really.
http://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2014-04-12/kernahan-throws-support-behind-skipper
This is the kind of thing I picture Sheik saying to himself in the mirror after a big night out supporting his beloved Giants.
Murphy has 17 other blokes on the field with him.
For the President to have to issue this statement... wow.
Three ways to see it.
1. Good that the club is getting behind Murph... sticking fat... but,
2. Crisis? What crisis?
3. A real leader would hate excuses / justifications being made for him. Hate it.
Sticks is right in that we do need to get better in the area of leadership, and cites the Pussy Cat leaders as an example, but... but... we do not have Selwoods, or Bartels, or Stevie Js to come to the aid of our Skipper, Sticks.
He can't be expected to do it all himself but he has to at least lead the way in effort and others will follow. That's what being a great captain is all about. Then he will get support. If he can't do that we have to find someone else who is willing to do it.
No. You get a whole lot more leaders into the joint so everything aint left to one cat. I suspect that that is what Sticks might have been on about.
Easier said than done, they don't grow on trees.
We sit here in pain, with all the misery world. It will not change till Judd comes back. Those who said we are nothing without him made their point loud and clear by the look of things. Can him and Daisy hit their best form at the same time at this club ? Can they change what we are ?
...and there you go, we are seeing the fruits of about 15 years of arrogance and ignorance and what these attitudes can do to a joint.
Yep, we do need a change. I don't care how, and don't care when. The problem is, no-one deserves it. Simmo is the best choice at the club ATM.
Those suggesting it will be "destabilising" if we strip Murphy of the captaincy, you're kidding yeah? How do you destabilise something that isn't at all stable? It's a farking shambles!
So as captain of the club and on a fair whack of coin he is excused from his duties? You lead the way and others will follow. That's what captaincy is all about. There's no two ways about it.
Might as well have no captain. Cos every player on our list is not captain/leadership material.
If only I could understand what the hell Willie was on about I may be in a better position to agree with you or not.
Even Walker acknowledged Daisy in a post match presser as a bloke who can step up and make some noise.
In his very first game wearing the Navy Blue jumper, Daisy made more noise out on the field than the rest of the team combined!
The things that introverts inherently struggle with are change and confidence. Voila!
Yep, Murph is another who's gone backwards under the dud coach.
Baddd. Oh to have the Marc Murphy of 2011!
In fairness he hasn't been the same since he crashed into Dangerfield, Hodge removed any confidence he had left.
What happened to Murphy's leg speed?
He seems to be running in treacle these days.
Used to be fast.
McKay, himself a premiership player, best and fairest winner and former club captain, conceded that Carlton's on-field leaders needed to improve.
"Certainly [there were] a lot of vocal boys before the game, Andrew Carrazzo was the most vocal, and Kade Simpson ... they were getting the boys up and about, [but] we probably are lacking a little bit in on-field leadership."

Those are damming comments for Marc Murphy IMO....I think the club need to encourage him to resign the position and just say it was affecting his game which it is and I think supporters/members would understand and think highly of him for putting the team first.
Not every great player can lead and its no reflection on his abilities as a man or player but it has to be done....Simpson needs to take over with Carrazzo as his deputy.
Can the club make a hard call and say we made a mistake giving Murphy the job......I think not....
Let's start with the change we desperately need, replace our reluctant President with someone who is capable of rejuvenating the club. This us a critical juncture in our clubs history and I pray we get someone capable of making the right calls. Get this right and the rest will follow.
I am torn over that.
Mainly because I feel for Murph though I think it could be the right choice.
We have Carrazzo and Simposn revving the team up...Carrazzo giving 3/4 time pep talks.....Murphy IMO is captain in name only and its actually become embarrasing
seeing other players doing his job...
Bit its just another mistake the club have made in an endless list..
Same thing that happened to all our players who were previously fast.
yarran has lost a yard or 2
Looks like Buckley has a yard on him but who knows if he was going at 100%
I honestly think he's going to loose sleep when maccaffer goes to him in a few weeks
In modern day AFL leadership, on field and off, has nothing to do with the individual.
Just like the positions people play and the roles they must fill, there must be multiple options ready to step up and respond to any challenge as a group in unity.
The list has spent so long in CJs shadow that they appear to be sitting back and expect Murphy to do it all for them just like CJ had for the best part of half a decade. It just won't happen, and it is about time they realised that is certainly the case!
Murphy is copping a pasting in the papers and Andrew Walker's comments have really thrown fuel on the fire IMO.....saying we are very quiet is a slap at Murphy IMO and suggesting Daisy was recruited to help Murphy because he has character and spunk only made me think a few senior players are not on the same page at the club...
Well considering the way he plays and how he got the captaincy (along with 800k + per year) there would be a few senior players that would be left shaking their heads would there not? Or did they vote Murphy in? If they did they've got no reason to complain at all. Easy to say we could have given it to Simmo he pretty much ruled himself out with that monstrosity he was growing at the time. We should have given it to Carrazzo, that way when he went down Simmo could have taken over. We really need someone to lead the way on field and ATM that man is clearly Simmo.
