Some nice reading here..

Anyone watching this game today will tell you this kid is a star already.
He is giving us so much.
His ability to now spread and run from the contest is a another growth area
Now he's lacing them out on his non-preferred. :))
We'd better get some good support for him, he can't carry the midfield all on his own.
Hes a winner and works because he wants to win...
Cripps is a natural leader, someone you want to follow into battle. If he continues with this form imagine what he'll be doing in 50 more games.
Did anyone notice the interview with Cam Mooney? He was almost the same height. Midfielder who can get forward and take a size advantage against most.
Feel a bit sorry for Murph.
Spent the last 6 years being asked questions about Juddy and will spend the next 6 answering questions about Cripps. ;D
...but he'll love being able to break away from congestion and get the ball on a plate...instead of having to fight for it with three 90 kilo blokes on top of him...
How good is this kid going to be. Ladies and gentlemen we have the bloke to take our club by the scruff of the neck and propel back into greatness.
If he knocks Hodge out I'm changing my daughters name to Patricia.
BOTH OF THEM!
His work on the inside is astonishing. The fact he could play a key forward because of his height, is a nice bonus.
What a f0rken beauty!
Look at the walk and strut, the chest puffed out and shoulders square. Every tackle dumped into the ground. That is presence. That is leadership. That needs to be our next captain next year.
he is all class - in a year of excrement, he is the sugar
Been so long since we've had a genuine young talent step on to the field.
Can we please keep a lid on the Messiah talk. We need 3 or 4 others who will come close to him in terms of talent and commitment. Then we'll really start to weave our way through traffic towards the top of the ladder.
He ran from the bench along side Krooz, I knew he was a big guy but geez he looked a fair size even against MK.
Makes sure the opposition know he's around off the ball too. Absolute beauty.
For those who were at the game today.....how was the crowd noise when Cripps was running with the ball into our forward half in the lead-up to Everitt's missed set shot late in the last? Even with 27,000 people, moments like those can make the crowd sound 3 times the size.....was an amazing atmosphere at that moment.
How was the handpass to Bell for his goal in the 2nd......still shaking my head in disbelief.......
Brillant display just class written all over this young guy
Reckon he got the 3 votes today and will probably be our highest vote getter in the Brownlow.....nearly got the triple double today.....possies, tackles, and was one clearance away from getting ten to make the triple double.
Not many players can get those numbers and given Port smashed us in the ruck its an amazing effort, his endurance has improved ten fold, future captain and I reckon his next contract will be a long and healthy one cos the WA clubs will come calling early with big money as he is that good...
Did he sew up the RS today?
That would be a huge bonus if he can win that
Wonderful work with players hanging off him at stoppages. This kid is a verified gem. Sign him to 5+ years now
I thought they did extend his contract earlier this year.
Not only MIO did he do it with players hanging off him, but he was prepared to hold on for a second longer and take a hit to get his team mate into a better position. He's just a smart player.
JET...
Nothing more, nothing less 8)
Got to take a deep breath and remember this was only his 12th afl game. This kid could be anything
Spine-tingling stuff. This guy will bring the crowds back IMHO.
He is a decent sized unit. He plays like a man, not a boy. He could be a superstar in a few years. We better find a way to lock him in and he is definitely our future captain. Ken Hunter would have been proud of his game today. I might get a number 9 ready for the next jumper. ;)
C R I P P S... the new way to spell JUDD. ;D
I was impressed by the way that he did the 3rd man up ruck work. I also like the way he marked the ball. He is a kid and has his issues (pace being the obvious), but it really looks like we got this selection right! Now if we can manage that trick a few more times! Better get you #9 now: they are going to be in short supply soon.
Unreal Crash. I thought I saw the same thing, but my daughter thought, Nahhh a mid won't go up third man in the ruck. I saw it a couple of times and he won the taps. I don't mind he doesn't have real pace. Pendlebury and Watson are not speed demons either. We might find a couple of speedsters in the next drafts.
Cripps just looks like he enjoys a contest and doesn't mind pushing his weight around. I thought 12 games would be about what we would get into his legs this season. Looks like he will get every game before seasons end. That experience is something you can't buy. In fact I think his leadership has lifted Murphy, Bell and Gibbs to pull the load and lift. I seriously do.
LOL, funny, and probably true!! :D
Cripps is all class. A definite future captain too I reckon.
I agree.
Kreuzer should be our captain right now. He has such an impact on the team. Sets the standard. Bloody injuries!
Odd thing to do for a Carlton supporter - look at one of these lists and smile:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_AFL_draft
Cripps = absolute bargain
Nick Graham at #54 from 2012 also looking more and more like a bargain.
For me Cripps is the most exciting recruit to our club since Judd and before that I can't think of one although we had our fair share of stars. If he can lead us out of the mire and deliver us once again to the promised land then he shall become a legend and I expect he shall. (Special mention...Tommy Bell)
Interesting the other day I read an article stating our recruiters were going to pick up Cripps well before the 2013 draft, had their eye on him for quite some time. That is some great recruiting if so.
From what I gather the pros start following kids before they are out of short pants. Which is probably why I'll never be a pro! :)) :))
However, they guys who recognized Cripps can be well pleased.
I was amazed at how tall he is, in the after match interview with Cam Mooney he was eye to eye with him and Cam was a KPP. :o
The article in the first post mentioned it.
He will be an imposing, even dominating, figure for us. Just what we need for the future, starting now.
He was third man up in a few ruck contests and got a few hitouts along the lines of how Adam Goodes played when he did a bit of rucking...anyone who thinks tall mids are not the go is living
in the past....
Bell may look like more kouta, but Cripps is starting to play more like him.
The way Cripps is using his strength and size to win the contest is just sublime. And he's only 20!
I agree, but I still see a clear need for a mix, too much of any one type makes you too predictable!
It's variety and effort that make you a hard team to match up on, along with some licences to let players use their skills. The efforts of Graham in the last few weeks make that clear!
It must be especially satisfying for Graham keeping in mind the spud development coach that told him he won't ever make the grade remains at the club and is probably busy swallowing his teeth at the moment! I bet that "Handbrake Coach" is busy telling everyone who will listen to him that the reason for Graham's turnaround is the hard news Graham had to hear! Wanker! ;)
Neither have Kouta's speed or power. Cripps will be better than Kouta on the inside, maybe as good as Diesel, but he won't have that break away power that Kouta and Judd had.
Marking wise Cripps will equal Kouta.
Bell is a different fish, not in the same class, more like a Lewis(Dawkthorn) type.
Is that for real? Who said that?
I'm not really sure what LPs means... But I thought I'd read here that Barker either told or passed on that message to Graham... Am I correct LP ?
It wasn't Barker, but Barker might be using the sentiment to fuel Graham's desire!
Are you sure you're thinking of the right players?
Parkin had Kouta as the best player in a contested situation he's ever seen and he coached both Diesel and Kouta. Diesel had superior vision and ability to get the ball to where he wanted it.
Kouta had something like 10 marks in a quarter once, Cripps won't match Kouta's aerial abilities. Who was quite a strong Mark, except for the occasional double grabber.
Cripps doesn't have the leap of Kouta. Doesn't matter anyway he will create his own identity.
Na, in an "At his best" type comment maybe. But Diesel did for ten years consistently what Kouta managed for just a couple of seasons!
Cripps already looks to me like he is going to be Mr Consistency.
Is Cripps a certainty for the Rising star?
Hogan is second favourite but Cam McCarthy has got to be ahead of him - with Cripps in front.
McCarthy 6th in the league goal-kicking. Hogan 22nd.
Depends who the media wants to win. Caro reckons Brayshaw will win it. ::)
Cripps is in front right now.
Brayshaw if he keeps playing like he did today will go close.
Carlton traditionally don't do well in Rising star stuff.
Couldn't give a stuff who wins it, but i don't think i would trade Cripps for any of them.
Please, let's not heap so much expectation on this kid's shoulders... rather let's expect more from those around him and recruit to support him... otherwise he'll break down like many we've burdened with saviourship.
The last time we did reasonably in the Rising Star was Camporeale. He managed to come 2nd. Murphy might have won had he not been broken. Nobody else has been close.
Like you, I am just not worried about it. It is nice to get some kudos, but building a winning culture is better. Campo had the last laugh in 1995. That meant more then. Hopefully Crippa will be the same.
Cripps must be a superstar ;D
Robbo just gave him the biggest wrap on 360...spoke glowingly of Graham too
Robbo talking positive about Carlton, rubbish Lods, I refuse to believe it. Must have been a "but" in there somewhere.
Robbo once again gave us a wrap saying Port did try to take the game on but we stood our ground with our pressure. Seems genuinely excited.
Watched the Brisbane game and Robbo was ordinary, reckon he isnt enjoying life at the Lions...
How do you like those apples ??
Even Eddie Maguire was talking him up all game on fox footy, then post game, and yet again on his radio show this morning.
The kid is a talent. If he can stay relatively injury free, we have piece #1 of our next premiership team in place.
Eddie can't shut up about this kid. He was exploding on the TV during the game every time Cripps was even near the ball. Even if he fumbled, Eddie would make it sound like he did something really special. I have not seen a kid this bright after only 12 games. Ever. He will captain our next flag the way he is going.
He may become our skipper but I'm expecting a premiership well before then :)
But notice that it appears to be a tag team thing - Murphy and Cripps both do well and the TEAM does well.
Nick Graham maybe a bit stiff to miss out on a RS nomination last week.
18 disposals, 5 clearances, 2 goals, 7 tackles. One of the key reasons we won a high pressure game.
AFL w@nks would have given each other windburn writing Tom Boyd's name down after 4 junk goals in an absolute walkover.
Great post Mantis & spot on with your Eddie comments.....I thoroughly enjoyed watching the replay for that reason.
Finally a draft pick outside of #1 that we got spectacularly correct.
Cripps' & Murph's best games this year have interestingly been without Judd playing (i.e. vs. Saints, Crows & Port). Cripps has made me love Carlton & love footy again......I can't wait to see him again this week - I've got so much man-love for Cripps that my wife is concerned :D
Such a rarity for us to have picked the eyes of a draft. Amazing. Just a fantastic fit for our midfield also. Gibbs, Murphy & Kreuz running off his handballs. Long way to go but he's really tough to stop.
Well the secret is pretty much out.
Opposition coaches will be aware of his influence and will give him a great deal of attention in their planning.
The question is how do you stop a player like Cripps?
I reckon that may give them a few headaches.
A player like that wouldn't be easy to tag.
If you get physical with him he'll just run through you or push/throw you out of the way.
He loves the contested stuff.
I don't trust Eddie's motives! He's just making sure that other teams are fully aware of Cripps and do everything to shut him down. ::)
There'll be lots of physical attention. It gets to you eventually. I just love that we've picked up a player who is impacting games to such a degree so early in career.
Yep
But I reckon there are a group of taggers (as Cripps gets even bigger and stronger) who are about to experience a whole new world of pain. ;D
Be interesting to see who breaks first ;)
They probably need to focus their attention on his receivers. I don't think they'll be able to shut him down in a year or two.
Interesting article today about the Blues tossing up between McCarthy or Cripps, but went Cripps due to perceived leadership qualities. Also reckoned they could acquired a young tall the following year.
Wehave slagged off our recruiting mercilessly - sounds like the thought processes was pretty sound at the end of 2013.
Was just thinking along similar lines myself earlier. Ah well!
I see him going okay against most teams but it is those hardened Hawks, Freo, Swan teams that will probably get him hurting.
I think we were the last team to play taggers
Taggers is probably a redundant term.
There are still tactics that are used to block and harass play-makers though.
While Cripps is still young they may get at him.
When he's been in the system a bit longer he'll be hard to stop.
He was initially a bit like a pup..with a little bit of puppy fat.
He's dropped a bit of weight and trimmed down.
Now he'll regain some of that weight as muscle. ;)
Like Kristian Jaksch Perhaps?
Going to get a lesson when we play Hawks, Freo, Swans etc.....unsociable footy they call it but its more about cheap shots when the umpire isnt looking.
I hope the other players look after him and give the support needed..dont mind a few reports either...
Line in the Sand game coming up ;D (hopefully it doesn't turn into a Got Sat on our Arse game :)))
Trading in blokes who haven't quite made the grade in weaker teams is always going to be a high risk strategy. However, in terms of drafting, we have done OK with a few and ballsed a few up. Probably no better or worse than most clubs.
Development hurting us more than recruiting.
We might have a similar number of hits and misses but our hits have promised much and delivered less whilst our misses drop out of the AFL completely.
Other teams might miss, but they tend to miss for different reasons too.
Kennedy was probably as good as Jaksch is right now when we traded him to WC.
I remember Kennedy loping out from the forward line like a lost kid, jumping at the ball and it cleared his head by 2 metres. I remember thinking - how is it possible this guy was a pick 5? Hendo when we first got him wasn't worth 2 bob.
Don't underestimate players who are still too young to tell - like Jaksch.
I hope we leverage SOS knowledge of the GWS list to pick up a bunch of their next rung down players who can't get a game. There is a truckload of talent still there. First round draft picks and U17 priority picks right through their reserves. Most of them still too young to have ramped up and trade value. Surely we can rip another 2 or 3 good ones. I still think Whiley will be very good eventually.
Interesting - GWS have never taken a pick in the National Draft later than pick 29.
Last year they took 5 picks in the top 24 (including Paul Ahern with our pick 7).
Beast!

Field Marshal: Carlton midfield prodigy Patrick Cripps is shattering the record books
SAM EDMUND, Herald Sun
August 2, 2016 8:00pm
PATRICK Cripps has always done things ahead of time.
Growing up on the family farm in Northampton, 500km north of Perth, Cripps was riding a motorbike when he was three and a half and driving by five.
Things are no different at football’s highest level, where Carlton’s midfield prodigy is shattering the record books when it comes to inside, ball-winning grunt.
Cripps’ stoppage prowess is no secret, but it’s the sheer volume of coalface extractions that demands further recognition.
Cripps became the fastest player to 250 clearances when he played his 38th game, in Round 17 against West Coast. Behind him are players like Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell, Sydney’s Josh Kennedy and dual Brownlow medallist Chris Judd.
At the same stage of their careers — 40 games — Cripps has outperformed Mitchell, Kennedy and West Coast’s Matt Priddis in disposal, contested possession, clearance and centre clearance averages per game.
Mitchell, Kennedy, Priddis — if that’s AFL ball-winning royalty, Cripps, at 21, is the prince.
Last year the country kid taken with pick No. 13 in the 2013 national draft became the youngest player to win the Blues’ best-and-fairest since John Nicholls, after whom the award is now named. This year he has gone to another level.
In his third AFL season, Cripps leads the competition in clearances (8.6 per game), pre-clearance disposals (12.6), is second in centre clearances (3.5) and ranks fourth in contested ball (16.1).
A whopping 48 per cent of his possessions are won pre-clearance — an extraordinary ratio and the highest percentage of any player.
If you’re being super picky, Cripps’ next challenge is to improve his speed and movement to more often become a factor when the ball leaves the stoppage. But when he and the ball are in the contest, he gets there first more often than not.
In Saturday’s narrow loss to Hawthorn in Launceston, Cripps had a game-high 11 clearances — half as many as the entire Hawthorn side. He also had a game-high 18 contested possessions and equal game-high 11 score involvements.
“It was a sound game,” a typically understated Carlton coach Brendon Bolton said afterwards.
“He was good in and around congestion. I would have thought his contested count and clearance count were really strong.”
Cripps is a phenomenon. As a 195cm midfielder, he is taller than North Melbourne great Wayne Carey and current stars Nick Riewoldt and Matthew Pavlich.
And when it comes to the fundamental art of winning the ball, he might just stand above everyone.
Fastest players to 250 clearances:
38 games Patrick Cripps (Carl)
44 games Tom Liberatore (WB)
44 games Sam Mitchell (Haw)
49 games Anthony Miles (Rich)
52 games Josh P. Kennedy (Syd)
CRIPPS THIS YEAR
Contested possessions 16.1 (4th)
Clearances 8.6 (1st)
Centre clearances 3.5 (2nd)
Pre-clearance disposals 12.6 (1st)
* All Averages

He's a good ordinary player.
After all, it seems a fair assessment based on the advice from many on this forum suggest we trade away Gibbs, Murphy, Kreuzer, Casboult and Tuohy so that we can draft another five like Cripps at the end of the season.
Blokes like Cripps must grow on trees! :D
Good ordinary player!
The numbers are great and the numbers are true, but Patrick Cripps has not had as good a season as he did last year. He stagnated for parts of the season with injury and he is being tagged unmercifully. His disposals have sometimes not hurt as much as they have last year and he has a much too high handball to kick ratio.
And he is STILL best in the competition in clearances.[/color]
There have been times this year, when he has had a quieter period, that he has simply WILLED himself to get the ball and get it out. He has started taking some impressive marks, although he has not done that much since his injury. There is more to come from Cripps, who may be our best recruiting decision this century.
@ Crash
I personally think that his performances this year haven been better than last for the following reasons:
1. The additional attention he is getting yet he is still accumulating good numbers;
2. I think he has been playing on one leg for the whole year (hence his reluctance to kick more)
I wonder what West Coast will be prepared to offer next time his contract is up... it's a while off I know but I's scared already.
Think he will be our highest paid player next contract....800k-1 mill a year probably for 5 years......just have to budget for it in the cap down the track and not pay overs to lesser types....
Proff I'm confident Crippa will be a one Club player.
Hope so GTC. I see him as probably our next captain and an icon of the club.
He's a freak youngster.
..and I think we have a few of those now.
Those days set sail long, long ago!
In the future it will be the extreme exception to be a one club player rather than the rule.
If you don't believe that ask yourself why the AFL is talking about NRL style mid-season drafts. Basically the AFL and AFLPA are freeing up the mechanisms that prevent players moving about more frequently.
Right on Time,
Quelle Surprise!
Whats wrong with a mid-season draft?
If the AFL can get the logistics of it worked out, then i think it will be great for the competition.
Too many teams shut up shop early and throw away the season.
A few key injuries and your season can be over very early on.
Mid-season draft can give you some hope and potentially resurrect your season.
Personally, if i was running it, i'd allow teams to pick up players every week to cover injuries.
Instead of elevating a rookie to cover an LTI, bring another player onto the list to cover the LTI.
Nothing at all, but I think it certainly debunks the notion of a one club player once it comes in!
It makes more sense in soccer or union where that player may arrive from a completely separate competition.
One club players are becoming rarer and rarer, but i don't think this will really affect that.
If this comes in, it will be to assist in moving on c-grade players rather than a-grade. Top talent can still be one club players.
Agree and Cripps is that very rarity IMO.
http://www.theage.com.au/afl/carlton-blues/robert-walls-says-time-for-patrick-cripps-to-analyse-greg-williams-20160829-gr3ghq.html
I agree with Walls
If there is an area for Cripps to improve on it is using his feet.
It will be harder for Cripps than Williams or Mitchell, at Crippa's size moving laterally quickly is so much harder and it just takes a fraction of a second longer to get foot to ball. That leaves him open for opponents to get a hand on the pill.
But the biggest thing is the absence of foot skills on their off-side. Diesel, Mitchell, Scotland, etc., etc., they all are hard to tell if they are left or right. The sad part of this is that it is something you can learn yet so many AFL level players cannot seem to master it.
Carrazzo was a great example, was shizen on his preferred foot and became proficient on his non-preferred foot by the end of his career, so much so people thought he was eventually better on his non-preferred.
Because he practiced. Its a funny thing that so many league players are still unable to kick with both feet. Mitchell is applauded for his skills, but it should be more common. The expectations are improving, but there remains an old fashioned view that kicking techniques can't be taught. Greg Williams taught himself to kick on his non-preferred side after an injury. Little wonder he was so dominant.
Hope cripps can really develop his kicking. Its not always easy for a big bloke, and his tendency is to get his arms up for the handpass. More kicking would make him even more effective.
Afl.com Record breakers 2016
"And although Carlton young gun Patrick 'The Extractor' Cripps was a shock exclusion from the All Australian 40-man squad, he's now the AFL's record-holder for getting first hands to the footy at stoppages more than anyone else."
Go figure, and if you can, please let me know ???
Dermie the brain surgeon today on SEN said Hawthorn rarely win clearances and they have won the last three premierships. So its important. ::)
I was reading the Buckenara article about why we should draft Boomer Harvey, for a moment Bucks had me convinced he was writing sensibly then he wrote this;
Obviously we have been doing stuff all wrong, looking for "A" graders when all we really needed to do was to recruit some more "B" Graders. ::)
The Hawks just pressure other teams to turn the ball over if they win the clearance. We can win plenty of clearances but manage to turn the ball over far too often in subsequent play. If we could fix that it would result in a big improvement for us.
