Title: The Awful Truth - 2015 Edition
Post by: ItsOurTime on August 02, 2015, 04:14:20 pm
This is the run home for all contenders (for pick 1 that is)

Carlton
Collingwood
Brisbane (away)
Melbourne
GWS (away)
Hawthorn

Brisbane
Gold Coast
Carlton
Adelaide (away)
Hawthorn (away)
Western Bulldogs

Gold Coast
Brisbane (away)
Richmond (away)
Essendon
Port
Sydney (away)

Gold Coast did us an enormous "favour" with their upset draw and will probably put themselves out of the running next week. Though a loss is likely to give them that last spot.

If it goes to plan though, then we'll most likely find ourselves on the same number of games as Brisbane the following week (don't be surprised by any omissions - expecting us to "manage" Cripps' young body and MK's fragile one myself) with a race to the lowest percentage from there - we'd need to out lose them by about 15-20 points per game probably less if they beat us by 5 or 6 goals.

I reckon Barker is in on this and is happy enough as long as there is effort. Not sure what the club has promised in return.

We will get pounded at least twice and could not start favourite in any of our games. I reckon we'll end up 2nd last.

Net result is Weitering to Carlton to replace Henderson given Brisbane will take Schache....

Brisbane will be very likely to take Schache. F/S, 200 cm tall, kicks straight, what is there not to like?

Brisbane have just offered 750k a year for Charlie Dixon.....so they are covering their bases a bit, I actually dont mind the left footed McStay and reckon he is a
decent forward prospect...

If Brisbane are getting Dixon and Schache in, McStay may jus decide to look for greener fields. Ours are pretty green and the only competition is Liam Jones!

Please Crash don't use the word Jones & competition in the same sentence , that's really rubbing it in lol

Gold Coast beat Brisbane, then the week after Brisbane beat us. That'd be the spoon.

Weitering is rock hard at the contest, he kicks the ball 70m, is mobile and clunks marks in extraordinary circumstances. Pretty much everything we lack in one package, we will probably ruin him as fast as is humanly possible.

I reckon we're good thing to get Weitering. Brisbane will go the father/son with Schnache. If we finish bottom we can really put the heat on Hendo. If he wants to go Geelong pay big or we re-draft him through the PSD (it work that way still or can he make himself a delisted FA?). Think he's implicated he was keen on staying if Barker was coach

its a good thing getting these players whilst we bottom out. The challenge now
will be keeping them to benefit us in the future.
It aint the 80's or the 90's where players didnt want to leave

I myself am not entirely sure about Henderson to be honest. Maybe we could trade him for Motlop. He isn't locked in to the Cats from what I heard. Trade this deal along with Yarran for a decent pick or a forward that can play and take marks. Its sounds stupid in some way, but might be an option we could look at. Yarran for a young player like Bruce from the Saints or WC for Kennedy. Just putting it out there.

That is one of the things I really want to change. We can't give the players extra money, but we do need to provide 'extras' for them to make us a preferred venue. I'd like to have them get more involved in as many things as possible. That way they have a financial and emotional stake in things and won't want to move on simply for a few extra dollars.

Reckon the club was well aware of how difficult a run home Brisbane has compared to us - that 10 goal buffer which we created today is most likely exactly what the club thought it needed.

Brisbane's last game finishes up about the time our last one starts. She could get interesting - especially if Hawthorn rest a few players going into the finals.

if we're going to get and trade for picks, I really want mckay gone.
He's not a football manager, he's a fuggin vet who once played footy.
Members will remain committed, if the club commits to getting serious about
getting the right talent, otherwise, these players will just get swayed by savvy managers
and better recruiting managers and our club will just be an incubator

It s ok to take the holier than thou stance, but if we had the right staff, garlett episodes
wouldnt happen

We can't have a fresh start without change at the top.
Get that and we can all be on the same page and UNITED will be more than just a hashtag.

Tigers turned it around very quickly. They were in debt and around us on the membership table only 3 or 4 years ago. They got it right off field, cleared their debt on the back of supporter donations and are now pushing Collingwood as the biggest club in the country.

I can name a bunch of senior/top draft players who havce cpontributed next to nads thios season:

Possibly in order of importance to the team:

1. Hendo - he must want out - for a guy who can be an AA performer (but only down back?) he has been worse than shocking.
2. Gibbs - B & F to pony tailed wannabe. Shocker. Trade bait imo.
3. Yarran - derailed by major off field issues it appears.....
4. Jamo - history.
5. Warnock - his best (not seen for a few seasons is top notch - remember the 2011 finals series?)
6. Menzel - pony tail aside, had a poor season. After 28 goals in 2015, gone missing.

Throw in Waite, Robbo, Garlett & Betts - all of whom could have/should have stayed. There's half a team of regular starters simply not there.

no they haven't mbb- no flag since 1980- they have had rises and falls...this rise is not guaranteed as they are 6th and will not win a flag this year...

that said, this rise is looking very good - great ceo, great recruiter (our Williams for 6 months),good assistant chocko, good coach, great supporters...ok board

Like a few people here have said you have to fix things off field first.

They haven't won a final since 2001 yet their membership and sponsorships are booming. They're doing something right.

We need to follow their lead and clear the debt otherwise we will always be at the mercy of Pratts, Mathiesons etc. Don't get me wrong we would still love their support but we won't depend on it.

i agree- we don't need billionaires - we need a small, smart, focused, hungry, hard working board that is obsessed about winning premierships

If I may, we are in a bad position but we have a foundation to work with and if good decisions are made, can make good progress. This is different to our plight a bit over a decade ago.

Our latent membership is evidence of this. The bulldogs, for all their rapid success this year, still only manage to pull crowds in the mid 20k, and we are awful to watch. Start winning games, and attendence will rise quickly. We still draw crowds and interest, as evidenced by the TV scheduling this season, not that we will get the same next year or after.

The critical issue is if we make good decisions now and gradually turn the ship around. We have decent facilities and while we will cop a wack this year financially, we can work it through. If we squander things again, it is harder than ever to climb up and the damage to the club will be generational.

Changes off field are happening and for the first time ever, we are recruiting a head coach properly. We lost 3 board members last year, so there is a little progress happening in this department. A coupke more may be gone in a year or two: its slow, but better this than the chaos of a total clean out and novice board in.

I would like to see some sort of indication from the club post appointment of the new coach of what direction they are heading and where to, if only to reassure that they understand that the head coach is step 1 of 50 odd.

The awful truth of 2015 has been such a kick in the nuts that there is simply no way we can't of learnt our lesson about the need to do business differently.

PP to Brisbane who have had 9 wins in 2 years, only beaten us this year and Collingwood (who are now poo) and North of any note last year with an exodus of players playing pretty good footy elsewhere is the greater danger.

Plus the AFL never seemto miss a chance to stick the boot in us.

They've also won the same amount of premierships as we have spoons in the last 15 years. :-[

Expansion club
Non AFL region
Financial Mess
Player retention has been difficult

Also the News Corp deal may have demanded the AFL fix the lions

Regarding Henderson, a year or two ago he showed some promise. Now he plays like a lost little lamb. I'm not fazed by him wanting to leave even if he does start performing well for his new club.
