Last game of the year. Hawks have nothing to gain as their percentage is far superior to Sydney.
If Brisbane beat the bulldogs we're last anyway.
So nothing game but hawks would like to get a good run into finals
Hawks have nothing to gain.
Will play in Perth 1st week of the Finals,as Eagles won't lose to Saints at Subi.
Reckon they ll rest a few, and only do us by a lazy 75-80 points
Hawks will want to win in case the Saints pull off a miracle later that night and they end up 2nd with a home final.
The win is in the bag.
It's just a matter of whether they ll completely spiflicate us like last time, or just cruise through while resting a lot of the sued.
Yarran, Docherty, Ellard and Buckley suspect with injuries. Missing Judd, Gibbs, Murphy, Armfield, Henderson, Thomas and the list just keeps growing. We could get smashed by the biggest margin we have ever seen. Clarko is just likely to set a strong team to make this happen. We stole their assistant coach. Revenge could be what he goes after with us. Rough guess, we should be happy if we lose by less than 120 points.
Clarko was the man who flooded our forward line to keep fev from scoring 100 goals when the game was over. Expect no mercy. Just whether they rest players
From memory I think it was Hodge after the match who said the rate that Fev was kicking them they were actually worried about him stealing Buddy's Coleman medal.
R23, NBs v Hawthorn. Gulp!
Hawthorn would be worried about this game.
They wouldn't want any injuries going into the finals.
I was looking forward to this game to see how things have changed since lastttime, but there will be such huge changess in personnel it will be meaningless.
Anybody know the severity of bucks' knee?
Good opportunity for boekhiorst to learn from a quality outside runner.
With Bucks, Doc and Ellard now ou,t will we even be able to field a senior team ?
Might need to get Skinny Lappin to fly down and make a comeback like he did last week for the Suns reserves side lo. The way we re going, he d still probably end up being our best player lol
Looks like I'll be missing my 2nd Carlton game played in Melbourne for the past 25 years.....out of choice. What normal human being would get any satisfaction whatsoever out of watching this 'contest'? The prospect of watching this game makes me feel nauseous ;)
I'd like to see Holman this week.
Boekhorst reminds me of a young Simon Tregenza... maybe chasing Hartung and Brad Hill and Smith around for a game might give him a clue where he needs to be at for next year.
the funny thing is, we're going to go "hard"
they will go soft - bigger fish to fry
...and they;ll still win by 15 goals
Barely 22 left to field a team. 100 point thrashing is on the cards.
Docherty going for an operation.
Anyway, as long as no one else gets seriously injured and is able to put in a full pre-season, I'll be happy.
This year is a write off. New brooms in Bolton and SOS in to try and resurrect the joint.
Let's see how the trade period goes.
Curnows signed for another two years. A very limited player with shocking disposal skills especially by foot.
Oh well. ::) ::)
Re Curnow...we do need to have SOME soldiers on the ground, they all can't be elite SAS types. ???
Curnow's one big asset is that he gives his best each week and isnt one of those players that JB was talking about who doesnt turn up to play.
He has taken Carrazzo's place and while I have not been sold on Curnow in the past, there is an honesty about the way he plays that I appreciate after having to
put up with Henderson, Yarran etc not caring or showing any pride...
Curnow always puts in 100% whether in training or match day.
He's a good example to have around the joint while we re developing the kids.
I certainly don't disagree with either you or Dominator 7's opinion on Curnow's effort.
I reckon he came off the ground crying, when we lost to geelong. he had given his all for no result.
BUT, that was not the point of my post.
Aside from the fact that we have been decimated by injuries and a coach in MM, who was obviously past his use by date, what has killed us in every game where we had a sniff of a chance to win or go close?
SKILLS!!!!!
Our skills are terrible. In fact, Carrazo whom he will replace, was the turnover king at Carlton, and Curnow's kicking skills particularly when trying to find a team mate on the chest who is 30-40 metres away, are terrible and bloody costly.
If he cannot improve in that area, and he's had 7 years in the system to do so, then all his effort to negate will account for little.
I hope that Bolton has and will study the players and be fully aware of their weaknesses, and will ensure that time and effort is not spared in his attempt to improve the skills of our players to a level that he took for granted at Hawthorn.
JB takes another swipe at some of the senior players (unnamed) who didn't have a crack last week.

He must be totally pi22ed at the attitude of some of those who are still on enormous coin every time they step foot on the field ($200,00 / year = $16,667 per month or over $9000 per game). Money paid under false pretenses. No doubt it is an automatic transfer because they couldn't possibly look the paymaster in the eye and accept an envelope.
They know who they are....play them this week out of necessity and then move them on.
They seem unlikely to get roughed up by our team of nice guys who won't chase and can't tackle.
The biggest danger to their physical well-being is the possibility that they run into each other while trying to be unsociable to our players - something to hope for?
RiverRat, they could pull a major hammy running too hard also. They could also be rubbed out fo rough conduct. Sling tackles, high impact etc. ;)
I'd make Boekhorst tag Smith for the whole game.
Carlton legend, one of the best and most consistent of the last decade. You only see what you want to see BN.
That would be even funnier if it wasn't so true ... Sadly

Even sadder is the fact that when I suggested the Hawks might be "worried about this game because of injury", the thought that they might be injured by aggressive play from a Carlton player never even entered my head. :(
I was thinking along the lines of accidental knocks or as Mantis suggested hamstrings etc
carrots had poor to average disposal at times - he was never elite like geelong where he came from
He was elite for a decent patch - the season before that Essendon low life (Lonergan?) pile drove him into the turf.
From memory he was leading most awards at that stage (even if early in the season).
we see things differently - after watching all games live over the years - that's my opinion ---simpson is the same
He was an average kick over a long distance so he played within his limitations and was a star for us. Always performed in finals. His 13 possie third quarter against Sydney in combo with Judd to get us back into the game in the 2010 Elim Final was amazing. Used to do all this whilst stopping the oppositions best midfielder. Just an absolute gun footballer.
His best game was when Pendleberry was slaughtering teams but against us, Carrots kept him to a dozenish possies and got it over 30 times.
Absolutely smashed him that day. Next week was Lonergan.
I'm with you on this one PI2C - a really good player and an even better person.
This^
With only 3 daughters wonder if he is going to try again for a boy? ;D
Having interacted with Andrew at a number of clinics it is obvious that he is a terrific bloke and loves kids. My kids found him to be engaging and quite charismatic... when he runs drills he is very positive and kids want to do their best for him. Born coach I reckon.
"Only" 3 daughters? ;D
Bloke's going to be a wreck! ;D
Is anyone actually going to this game?
Not sure if this has been posted

Yes...going to watch hawks 16 th straight win
Yep, my last game before plunging into fatherhood.
All the best with the pending fatherhood.
Picked a good era hopefully we will be strong again by the time the child understands what's going on !!
I had 2 daughters and that was plenty. Just wait for the teenage years aka the antichrist years...
Unfortunately the pain starts well before that. Apparently they are very nice when they come out the other side in about 15 or so years.
Hope everything goes well on the fatherhood front.
Been there, done that and good luck...... ;) Boys are so much easier....
Thanks crash and hubba
I have five girls and yes they do come out okay after there teens,if you stay sane long enough to see it .But wouldn't swap them for anything as they are always on my side and they support the blues not like there swan supporting mother.
Fortunately both daughters are now adults and have good lives. One has a son who is all trouble - karma ;)
Now i admit not seeing the game last week, but Brad Walsh been killing it in the two's and by the sounds of it, came on and had an impact. Now omitted. Why not sit him next to Sam Mitchell all day and ask him to beat him in the contest as many times as he can...
We'll miss Doc but Clem, Carrotts and the Holster.... those three have a bit of crap in 'em and won't die wondering. I feared this might be a 200 point flogging but I reckon we can keep it to 160 points.
Because Ellard needs another opportunity to prove himself. :-\
Wow! Something to look forward to then. :D
Carlton

Foll: Matthew Kreuzer, Tom Bell, Patrick Cripps.

Not exactly our strongest team for the year, but we are not tanking or we would have played Jones.

I hope we can show some spirit and really play physically.
Finally got it! We're miles ahead of Freo & North and been resting our top players for finals for most of the year, with this week no exception.
Plan worked well apart from the finals bit.
This is going to be a spanking, 138 points is in danger.
White and Jaksch injured, Henderson AWOL and Jones still can't get a game, recruiting him was a good call.
Congratulations on parenthood RE, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
My daughter's getting married next week by the way, I'm feeling rather aged.
LOL amazing stuff isn't it? Down to our last 26 players and Jones can't get a game! Remember in the preseason when Mick was talking him up as a 'powerful beast' and 'going to be unstoppable', 'recruit of the year' etc.
I live in the western suburbs and know a lot of Footscray supporters, not one of them was sorry to see the back of him.
I think we're just that desperate for anyone remotely resembling a key position player that we took the punt, and Malthouse was just pumping up his tyres in the hope it would motivate him.
Watson's getting another game after his stellar 6 touches last weekend, that's got to tell you something.
Now that your mate is getting a game...after game...after game....have you come to the same conclusion as everyone else? That he is not up to AFL standard?
As bad as Jones has been, i reckon he offers us more than Watson....still.
Would still like to see him under another coaching regime. I think he has talent.
To be honest, and it might not be saying alot, I reckon Watson has played senior footy better than Jones. He can kick to start with. Not a great sample size but Watson did pretty well against Melbourne, played well last game last year. Watson offers a little, Jones zero.
I wonder if Watto has ever tried some alternative training techniques and specialist coaching in the offseason to improve his speed and mobility. He won't become Usain Bolt but he can improve this area of his game. Maybe drop abit of weight? Cripps did it last summer and look at the difference. Juddy has done it. I just hope the kid doesn't "die" wondering.
He can kick. That 1 fact has kept him on the list for 5 years now. When are we going to see him do anything else? He doesn't even try!
At least Jones tries. Has taken a few decent grabs. Kicking can be fixed..eventually.
Effort, cannot.
I'd be happy to see the back of both of them. But if i had to keep one, Jones would be it for now.
Why play Ellard? Give Walsh a run. JB's last game as coach, last game for us for 6 months. Last game for Carrots, Watson, Ellard maybe for Tutt, Whiley, Menzel. Good luck boys, send some of those sniping hawks to the Epworth.
Go Baggers!
Send off game? *crosses fingers*
With a contract Jones will be on the list one more year at least. Watson's out of contract I think, so he may need to get lucky if he's to get another contact.
He was pretty ordinary. No point playing him for the sake of it.
The point is getting another game into him. Ellard has been pretty ordinary for a long time and has no possibility of upside whatsoever.
9 disposals and a goal (better than 7 other players) in 1 1/2 quarters. Yep must have been terrible in a side getting beaten by 81 points.
x2 Walsh should be playing especially vs the Hawks where he will learn plenty....
Walsh would learn more about the game, and we would learn more about him. Maybe this is the end of Ellard.
If I had a dollar for every time this forum screams for some kid to get a go and the silence that follows when they step up and are out of their depth.
Where is the harm in playing Walsh in place of Ellard...unless its a farewell game for the latter....
FWIW..I didnt think he was out of his depth last week....
Looks a pretty even contest on paper.
Unfortunately we're playing on grass.
They're not resting too many....looks like they're going to have a crack at the record. :(
On the positive side..... if we pull this one off, it's one we'll sing about around the campfires for decades to come
Reckon the Hawks will make a late change or two and rest a couple more.
I'm off to Fiji tomorrow, intending to blissfully ignore this game.
But if I was coaching I would line up 4 players to punch Gibson in the guts... one every quarter.
Ellard retiring. Fair enough giving him a sending off I have no issues with that now.
Actually, for the sake of a $1000 fine line up all 22 to do it...lol.
I can understand that. One of the weakest efforts from the Match Review Idiots was not suspending him. Very poor indeed. I would like to see him pay for his folly.
I can honestly say that having watched the game, he looked out of his depth and we played against a team that was no where near as good as Hawthorn.
Remember all the crap Malthouse copped for parking Whiley on Pendlebury (rightly or wrongly)?
Now we want to repeat that effort with Walsh, but its all of a sudden a good education....
There you go again Thry. Let it go mate.
lol at let it go. You've been sooking about Ratten for 3 years.
And you've been sooking about Ratten for 5 years lol.
Remind me who started the Sack Ratten thread again?
Still, five is greater than three. LOL.
I literally want to find out whether or not people think its the right or wrong thing to do.
Again, I am only interested in the betterment of our footy club.
If Walsh will benefit immensely by being smashed by Hawthorn this weekend, then Im all for it.
If his confidence will be shot, and the rest of the arguments trotted out against Whiley are repeated, then I am completely against it.
Based on last weekend (which I saw) and of Walsh's current AFL level performances, of my two outcomes, the latter looks more likely (to me) and that has more to do with the way Hawthorn are performing and the way we are competing that is making that decision for me.
We are not likely to win.
We are likely to lose, and we are likely to lose heavily. Will Walsh benefit??
Bit different...Mick was coaching for wins and greater glory..mainly his own...
JB is coaching for development.....if Walsh follows a gun like Mitchell around all day he will learn more than playing on some
kid from the burbs in the Nb's
Waston's first two games were against a prime Travis Cloke and he never recovered.
Whiley should have been getting games, no problem from me there. 10 games will have gone to Ellard this year, 8 of which we lost and his impact minimal in all of them.
10 games into a kid is 20% of their initial development.
Depends on the players mental abilities to want to be an AFL footballer.....Walsh wants it more than Watto IMO....reckon he can handle it.
SOS had ten kicked on him by Plugger.....probably learned plenty that day....
I don't think you can compare that Carlton vs this Carlton.
FYI, I think Whiley was given an education by Pendlebury too, but the only thing that changes is what we think of it, which is a point I was trying to make.
Thank you for helping me make it.
The main difference between educating, and hurting is the support team around them. I reckon there is not much learning going on in a team like ours where most of the onus is literally to survive 4 quarters without bleeding too heavily.
Anything under a 138 point loss should be considered a win.
Of course he will every game of football will improve him and it doesn't really matter any more anyway, after 8 years of service I'm happy for Ellard to get one more game with his mates.
It means we're getting closer to a win ;D
Carlton players get in a drunken scuffle, the media cry that it is a disgrace and the players must be punished and they are promptly traded.
The Hawthorn captain allegedly gets done for drink driving the week before finals and Hawthorn say it's nothing to with them and the media say fair enough!
A courageous driver and top bloke who walks that line between sober and drunk frequently, but definitely never intentionally drunk. I reckon he should get off with a fine!
Meanwhile, Hodge just signed his death warrant. The AFL are running out of tall poppy's to try and cut down, and they now have an excuse to go after him. Lets see if the poo and wee discount will still apply at the tribunal from now on.
I agree, he never intended to kill anyone, it would have been an accident if it had happened!
A warning should suffice!
If only the world had more drink drivers like Luke, the courts would be far less busy! ;)
Hypocrisy: That is the word to describe this.
Actually TBF, the penalty for first offence drink drivers under .07 is a fine and 10 demerit points.
ONLY A LITTLE BIT OVER !
::) Bloody idiot.
The breath tester must have been on a funny angle causing the reading to appear high! :o
Pagan lined Walker up on the best opposition players in his first two seasons, Goodes, Ricciuto, Buckley, the lot, but Walker is a different kettle of fish to Walsh.
No one knows whether Walsh will play more than a handful of games at this stage, I'd be inclined to leave it up to the coach and match committee.
There's no point playing young blokes just for the sake of it.
On another note, thanks for the effort Davey Ellard, you won't die wondering.
Get used to it. Next year with 50% of our team U22, 138+ is going to be a weekly occurrence.

sniper loves a tipple
2 weeks after his club saw first hand the tragedy that can occur if you play with the law on the roads. I know 1 assistant coach who wouldn't give him much sympathy.
Jones actually dominated a very limited number of AFL games with the doggies. Watto has never dominated anything that involves winning a contested footy.
I think Walsh is even slower than Mitchell.
FMD, Ch.7 have gone the Full Monty and given Hodge pre-game and half-time coverage to brown nose his way out of any real consequence for drink driving just two weeks after the Ratten's family tragedy!
Ch.7 are a hypocritical, two-face, self-serving bunch of pricks. I'm surprised they aren't sending a hat around the boundary to help poor Hodge pay his fine!
Oh that's right, Hodge is probably getting a fee from Ch.7 under the ASAs, job done!
Makes me want to puke. Ling will be licking ring as per usual.
LOL. I see what you did there!
Any integrity in the game left long ago.
Was very happy to watch us win last week. As for this week, I traded Lewis into my DT side for the GF. He should get plenty of it...
Sad to be watching the last qtr of the year, had such hopes initially. But 1st min lost Daisy set the pattern
