Tayla Harris has requested a trade back to Melbourne!
Apparently we are the front runner! :o
Great article in The Hun by Eliza Sewell linked HERE (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/aflw/tayla-harris-to-leave-brisbane-and-move-to-victoria-as-afl-womens-trade-period-begins/news-story/8e74de705550242eb038dbefe6c63e49?nk=753db8ff1da51b11cb2a9c108f262b74-1494473314).
Note the lack of spin and bullcrap, just the facts!
For the next draft there is a one game Father & Daughter rule I never knew about! :D
PS: Our club now has a nice summary of the new AFLW Trade / Draft rules. HERE (http://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2017-05-11/aflw-to-introduce-fatherdaughter-rule)
Maybe this is where our Marquee signing will be????
Perhaps Trigg has been foxing all this time!
Pretty sure the rumour came out before the AFLW was even a thing.
Massive coup:
http://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2017-05-16/blues-sign-magpies-star
Stevens is their reigning B+F winner, plus all Australian. Our backline with her and Davey is going to be AWESOME!!!
I'm a bit surprised Stevens wasn't an automatic re-signing by Collingwood, who do we lose?
3 first round draft picks is the reported story.
I'm so so about this thinking.
That's a big price to pay for a proven performer, but the data on the draftees is probably not at the level to make any draft pick a certainty in the women's competition at this stage meaning that your chances of recruiting well are probably a little bit more down to good fortune, than anything else.
we will see how it all pans out later I guess.
It's since been reported that Stevens' requested the trade for personal reasons and Collingwood let her go.
The thing to be mindful of is that the draft picks for this comp aren't as valuable as the mens. Also we have an excellent age profile at our club. A few clubs went pretty heavy with the older, more established players, but most of our best players are 24 and under. We can afford to forgo a draft to get top end talent in, especially when we could just as easily land a great kid later in the draft than early. It's much more speculative.
3 Draft picks. We got Stevens and Collingwood's pick 28.
Probably some more wheeling and dealing to come.
I would like us to get some real pace in our midfield. Our mids are a hard working lot, but they don't have the real ZIP I like to see. We do struggle somewhat against the teams with good midfields.
I think we also need another KPF, most of our scoring came from our mids or Vescio who plays more like a small forward.
One more marking target to give Jakobsson a chop out would be nice, if they have enough aerobic capacity to go through the midfield even better.
Something tells me this draft is going to be chock-a-block full of youthful talent, there will be a lot of kids hearing the words all aboard the AFLW! I see a group of them down at the foreshore most mornings training on the sand, doing hill runs and handball drills.
Agreed, Harris marking with Vescio crumbing would be a devastating combination, and Vescio would end up with a lesser defender.
But you would think after the Stevens deal we are out of the running, but who knows, is Jo Silvagni part of the AFLW negotiating team?
One gets the feeling there is some Victorian bias in the AFLW, they want a Victorian team to be in the finals to allow greater interest. It will be interesting to see how trade / draft week pans out.
From what I read yesterday, it seems as though the players will become unrestricted free agents if a trade isn't agreed to, with compensation given to the team losing a player. So there's a chance we could wait until after the trade period to pick up Harris and let the AFL compensate them.
Of course we could always trade a player (and some latter picks) to the lions as well.
Who knows if any of our girls want to go and play in Brisbane.
Can't find a male player who wants to play in Brisbane. Would be twice as hard for a woman semi professional to play there.
Tom Bell wanted to go to Brisbane for family reasons.
Females can't do the same?
Players move for flags and/or more game time. They move to be closer to their families, or because their partners are in that city.
Plenty of reasons....we might just get lucky.
Just an update of sorts. Big Sauce Merrett was on Triple m this arvo and the topic of Taylah Harris came up. He said without a doubt she is gone.
She said to him that she was not enjoying her footy at all, and was contemplating giving it away altogether. She is training to be a boxer and actually has a fight coming up soon.
Point is, she won't be at the lions next year and wants to be in melbourne. That automatically gives us a 25% chance of getting her. Considering our need at KPF, we'd obviously be an attractive destination for her too.
Yes it is all on the AFL website now, she has nominated Carlton.
It will be interesting to see if the deal can be done, it's been so long that any sort of marquee player has chosen Carlton as the preferred destination it's a bit shocking! :o
It's the AFLW equivalent of Jonathon Brown nominating Carlton in his prime!
She didn't have a great season, but at only 20 years old, she's going to be a great acquisition.
One thing I'm getting out of this trade period is that Carlton are obviously doing all the right things with our womens team. We've got A Grade facilities, a top notch coaching staff and give our players the opportunity to play on an AFL standard ground each week in front of thousands of supporters.
I feel like our club has really started to turn a corner on all fronts with regards to our administration.
We've apparently offered Jakobssen!
Not sure why we would offer Jakobssen, didn't she grow up a Carlton supporter?
It would seem to me the great benefit of obtaining Harris would be to play her along side Jakobssen and Vescio letting them get the 2nd and 3rd defenders.
Jakobsson has put her hand up apparently, her girlfriend is from QLD and she's happy to make the move. I give it 12 months and she'll be requesting a trade back ;)
Don't tell Jeza, nobody wants to go to Brisbane. ;)
Not sure what picks would be involved with that trade, but it couldn't be far off.
Harris has potential, but Jakobsson has form. One of the best marks in the game.
The Lions want more than just Jacobssen.
Don't sell the farm for a player who cares more about boxing than footy
Sydney did exactly that and got themselves a premiership captain out of it.
With the new teams coming in in 2019 we MUST lock in all the high talent we can.
This is a league where one player can lift you a long way up the ladder and when the new teams come I it will be even more stark.
Harris is an absolute beast and we'll have quality ball users hitting her lace out, much better tan Brisbane and with Vescio taking a lot of heat.
Get her, go hard.
From my understanding all the interstate teams aren't interested in picks coming their way.
Come draft time they only pick from the pool of girls that have nominated to play in their state.
So giving Bris our 10th 12th pick means nothing. They would be picking the girls at that pick anyway at one of their picks.
The interstate clubs want players not picks.
But the victorian clubs are more than happy to get the interstate picks because they are picking girls in which there are 4 clubs vying for pick positions.
If for example GWS get a deal from a Vic club for their 1st & 2nd pick that club would have the 1st pick in the draft (& 1st in the Vic pool of talent) and then GWS 2nd pick which would be pick 9 overal (but pick 6 in the Vic pool).
There in lies the power the interstate clubs can give the Vic clubs.
That is how it currently stands for the northern clubs, because there are effectively zero women's comps in the northern states. But it's a different situation for the other states, SA and WA actually have an advantage over the Vic clubs.
In any case, that rule won't stay in place if AFLW becomes a success, the girls will have to become full-time professional and go where the contracts come from.
At the moment they have a strong case for work and lifestyle choices because the season is so short it's just semi-professional. They have to supplement AFLW with other careers.
I believe all the above is true.
However, the lions COULD ontrade those picks to OTHER vic clubs for players as well.
Essentially a 3-way deal.
Say Harris -> Carlton
Picks (from carlton) -> Melbourne
Player (Melbourne) -> Brisbane
Throw in Jakobsson -> Brisbane...and that deal is pretty close.
A little bit Sandra Sully, but haven't seen it posted yet.
After the trade with Collingwood, i was hoping another wouldn't be far away.
Alas, not to be.

Booo. :-[
Does this mean we have taken another Nic Stevens from Collingwood ;) :P

Any whispers floating around about a Tayla Harris deal?
It seems both ominously and unusually quiet for such a deal to be in the works!
Can't we pick her up as a delisted free agent if no trade gets done anyway?
Pity Steph was a one eyed Carlton fan growing up
Tayla Harris is Bluebagger, deal done. Just popped up on my phone app/
Bella Ayre and midfielder Nat Exon to the Gabba and forward Bianca Jakobsson to Melbourne.
Wow, that is a big price to pay!
Exon is a shock for me, the type of player we generally lack.
Sorry to see Bianca go, but it seems she was open to a move for whatever reason.
Bella Ayre showed commitment;
St Kilda have senior men who won't leave Brighton to get to training! ;o
Three of our best???
It does seem a big price to pay.
We must have a lot of faith in some of the new rookies.
I suppose this competition as a new as it is will be very dynamic as it grows.
Nervous about this. Gutted to lose BJ, and Ayre and Exon are best 22. Feels like we're selling the farm for all hype and no output. This is probably the equivalent of trading Casboult, Jaca Silvagni and Ed Curnow for Josh Schache.
Nat Exon was a favourite of mine, and many really, and will be tough to replace.
Jakobsson is an excellent mark, but an average kick. Our 'female casboult'. I think she is a bit older too IIRC.
Bella Ayre gave us some good moments but has a lot of limitations for the long term. Speed, endurance and overall athleticism is lacking in comparison to Harris.
So basically, Harris is a big upgrade up forward on Ayre/Jakobbson. It gives us the best 1-2 forwardline in the league with Vescio. We already have the best defender in the league (Davey) and upgraded that area with Stevens, B+F winner from Collingwood. Giving us the best 1-2 backline in the league.
Our midfield stocks are not too shabby. Sarah Hosking is a better version of Nat Exon, and hopefully getting her twin sister Jess back from injury provides the cover we need there.
Put money on us to win the flag now. ;)
If nothing else, think of the marketing this girl can bring us....
She is/was a marquee player and a face of the AFLW.
and....

The Club is making a massive statement by luring over the best young key forward in the comp, along with Collingwood's All Australian B&F winner. With Harris, Vescio, Stevens, and Davey, we'll be star studded next year, and the flag is a realistic objective.
The old days are back, albeit in the AFLW!!
Its not just about luring someone over, its about being a place that they WANT to come too. Something our blokes are struggling to setup.
