Title: VFL Rd 11: Northern Blues vs Box Hill Hawks
Post by: crashlander on June 29, 2017, 10:11:03 am
Already bad news: Phillips is out for the rest of the season. :( That means the Little Blues will be a huge disadvantage in the ruck. Gorringe MAY be right, but he will probably miss another week, and he is not the ruckman Phillips is.
If we start off with Korchek and Bolger again, we are going to find it very hard to defeat Box Hill, who have lost only once.

Hopefully there will be a few guys coming back, but with the seniors losing Ed Curnow and probably Lamb, there may not be much cavalry arriving.

NORTHERN BLUES v. BOX HILL HAWKS

Round 11 – 02/07/2017  02:00  Preston City Oval

Northern Blues

B: 35. M. Stavrou, 34. J. Glass-McCasker, 7. D. Buckley
HB: 70. H. Macreadie, 13. C. O’Shea, 6. G. Strachan
C: 59. C.  Byrne, 5. B.  Smedts, 62. B.  Boekhorst
HF: 24. R. Palmer, 31. P. Kerr, 49. D. Armfield
F: 56. A. Gallucci, 19. H. McKay, 42. J. Pickett

23P: 33. A. Federico

A lot of guys need to really stand up after last week's debacle. Smedts is probably a little stiff to be dropped, even though he was not what we needed last week. Pickett needs work and Boekhorst just isn't up to senior standard, but they will hopefully make an impression. We need them to, which is why I don't think it will happen.
Tim Jones coming in is a real positive. Most of the others who are named on the bench have been delivering in the Development League.

In: B. Smedts, S. Russell, J. Pickett, T. Jones, K. Keppel, A. Federico, B. Boekhorst, C. Barrett, D. Stevens

23P: 44. J. Lynch

In: R. Henderson, A. Kennedy, D. Howe, C. O’Sullivan, L. Cox, R. Schoenmakers, T. Duryea, J. Sicily, W. Murphy

Out: M. Lewis

I can't believe hawthorn dropped Sicily and Ricky Henderson. They were among their better players when I saw them last.

Weren't Whitecross, Sicily, and Schoenmakers all the rage not long ago? Everyone wanted to poach these guys.
Playing in the  2's maybe they wouldn't mind moving on?

Peter Jackson VFL 2017
Northern Blues   1.1  3.7  4.11  6.19 (55)
Box Hill Hawks   3.4  4.7  8.10  11.11 (77)

19 - 6 and we win easily. 12 - 13 and we still win. Many opportunities, which bodes well. Not taking them, well, that is something we have to work on.

DISPOSALS: Boekhorst 36, O'Shea 28, Wilson 25, Russell 22, Smedts 22, Strachan 21, Macreadie 20, Palmer 20.

There are actually some good signs in this. Boekhorst responded to be his bad game last week, as did a number of others.
Goals: McKay, Kerr, Gallucci, Pickett, Buckley and Palmer.

Apparently Harry had a lot of shots, but only put away one of them.

Boekhorst can look classy and seems to be cream in the VFL, but he just can't seem to take that step up to AFL level. I have never been convinced that he would make it in the big time - but then I thought that about Liam Jones! Boeky's time is running out this year though I fear.

If O'Shea nominates for the PSD or Rookie Draft do we offer him a spot?

He is still only 25!

Someone will surely pick him up. Reckon he adds more value than a couple of our rookies.

He will be drafted. The only question is, by whom? We have the 'inside running' if we want him badly enough, because he came to us to resurrect his career. We've helped him. But we have to stake our claim.

What size shape position is Cam O'Shea??

Reports vary, but I reckon he's about the same height as Marchbank or ACoS, but perhaps heavier.

He is small to medium defender. He is actually around 192 cm tall (according to Google), but he plays a smaller role. He weighs in at around 90 kg. Not a lot different to Plowman and Marchbank.
I was quite surprised by that, seeing that he doesn't take the taller forwards much at all.

O'Shea is 193cm I think (though Wikipedia has given him another 4cm). So the same size as Marchbank.

His knock was always on his kicking if memory serves. Clearly he knows how to get the ball.

Turnover merchant at half back for Port...been better at VFL level but less pressure of course....has a bit of fight in him though and doesnt mind a
bit of push and shove, some chance to be be rookied but not if Alex Silvagni is still a rookie IMO..

Stats can sometimes be misleading, but they do have their uses.
[1] Judging just on those, Palmer and Boekhorst had GOOD games. What was it they were NOT doing as the coaches required? It had to e something, or they would have been rated higher.
[2] Michael Stavrou is one to watch. I have been impressed by him. My only question is simple: does he have enough pace for AFL? He has poise and a great set of hands.
[3] We lost the ruck, but not too badly just looking at the stats. Korchek must have been more effective this week. However, we does appear to have been the lone ranger in the ruck. We will do better with ruck support. Pity Phillips is not going to be the one, as he dominates at this level.
[4] 14 possessions for Casey Byrne is a slight improvement. If I were Carlton I would be approaching his gams this season as an extended pre-season for 2019. To get his speed and direction changing back, as well as a touch of confidence, should be what we are looking for in him for the rest of the season.
[5] 5 possessions for Armfield, 6 for Lebois and 6 for Harry McKay are simply not good enough. Armfield might be the on-field general, but unless he starts getting some ball and making a real difference, he may as well retire.

Who decides "best" in this pink and purple table Crash? The coaches?

Pickett at the bottom too!

It may not be the coaches, but it definitely comes from inside the club. I THINK it is the coaches and the MC, but I could be wrong.

Yes, I was hoping from more from Pickett, but he is very up and down. So, it appears, is Polson. But, at this point in his development, he needs a WINNING ruck and we don't have it.
A bit more hard work from both of those guys won't go astray at all.
