Not looking forward to this one. We matched up well against Geelong last year when we had a decent proportion f our list available.
That is not the case at the moment. Losing to Brisbane yesterday defies description.
We'll win this one!
If ACoS is back....
I doubt that Alex Silvagni will be fit. It would be nice if he were to be fit.
Marchbank, Byrne and White will be ready to come back if required
Player Injury Duration
Ciaran Byrne Groin 1 week
Tom Williamson Back Test
David Cuningham Groin Test
Dale Thomas Calf Test
Alex Silvagni Knee 4 weeks
Patrick Kerr Hip Season
Caleb Marchbank Shoulder 1 week
Ed Curnow Larynx 3 weeks
Simon White Knee 1 week
Dylan Buckley Hamstring 3 weeks
Andrew Phillips Foot Season
Patrick Cripps Leg Season
Sam Rowe Knee Season
This was last week's injury list.
Alex Silvagni has 2 - 3 weeks left , depending how he recovers. We could do with him.
Caleb Marchbank is a high probability of being available. The only question would be whether he goes straight back into the 1sts or has a week in the VFL. My preferred option would be a week in the VFL to get rid of the cobwebs, but our practice in recent times has to bringing guys back directly.
Simon White could also be ready, as could Ciaran Byrne. Both of these are senior chances, but have a higher probability of starting in the 2nds.
Ed Curnow's '3 weeks' has been about the same for 3 weeks. This has been an injury that has been hard to shake. However, if he can get over the present plateau, he may be back quite quickly. But I wouldn't want to put my money on it.
The problem is that had too many players who had very poor games against Brisbane and far too few who had anything like a decent game against North Ballarat.
I have good seats for this game.
If nothing else I will have a decent view of how well Geelong are likely to beat us.
Hopefully we traded for 4 premiership points to go with the Billie Smedts, Zach Tuohy trade.
Geelong are soft as butter and are a two man show. However, we would need to be 500% better than yesterday to even get close. Letting an oppo like the Bears get nearly 100 possessions more is unacceptable. Gibbs owes us big time after that crapful performance. Perhaps he is lowering his trade value to the Crows.
Gibbs often doesn't respond well to a hard tag. The MC should really have a Plan B to deal with that. I know they tried playing him as a permanent forward but that just took him right out of the game.
We seem to match up better against the Cats but I'm not all that hopeful :(
We actually won the week after the Brisbane disaster last year. Admittedly we kept Melbourne out of the 8 by beating them so it wasn't exactly Geelong, but it does show a week is a long time in football.
Gibbs should really have a plan to deal with that.
Especially with Cripps out he will get more attention...Gibbs will get Cam Guthrie for company this week, maybe Bolton can line him up at Full Forward or another position where his tagger wont be as comfortable.
Kerridge for Danger and Nick for Selwood?
Given Zorko, Beams just ran around unmanned for a half maybe he wont bother tagging the dynamic duo.... ;)
We should look at what the Pies do when they play the Cats, works every time....and that seems to be shut those two done...the rest looks after itself.
our fwds need to apply PRESSURE,if we let them run it out of our fwd zone with ease game over
Nick as in Graham? Selwood will do the old call the runner over and ask for a Record so he can look up 32 for us.
Geelong are harder bigger bodies than Carlton. If we try Man-on-Man or Tagging Everybody we are guaranteed to lose, our lot will be brished aside like they aren't there!
Our best chance is to get the ball out into space and move it quickly, really quickly!
Almost certainly Scott will try and have Geelong rough us up, both Scotts think Carlton is soft, soft, silverspoon soft!
As if. Geelong by 8 goals.
Blicavs will be out - done an ankle.
Looks like Ed won't be back this season.
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-07-25/blues-mid-curnow-running-out-of-time-to-return
Bolton indicated that it was a pretty serious injury last week :(
I have to wonder about the cause and whether there should have been MRP action :-\
Shorts to ankles
Hands to toes.
So what's you plan supercoach, let Dangerwood run around unattended and lose by 15 goals? Don't want Gibbs tagging, we can't win playing our best mid in a negating role.
Maybe give Cunners a task, though I wonder about him sustaining the necessary workdays.
Ed curnow ruled out for ANOTHER 4 weeks.
Cue in the rack.
The plan is to play keepings off for as long as possible and keep the ball away from them.
We don't have a player to negate one or either of them currently. Not many teams do!
If we tag them, they'll still perform.
If they tag us, we won't perform.
With a bit of luck we can have Gibbs and Murphy go to them, shake hands, and say see you after the game.
That way we escape a tag on our 2, and help our chances of winning.
Ed Curnow would've been our most important player this week. We'll miss him alot. Last year we blanketed both Dangerfield and Selwood and won comfortably. Be harder this year.
Yep, let him get right for 2018, just no point playing injured blokes now!
I'd like to see footage of the moment when Ed sustained that injury.... and pass it on to the AFL.
Well, the elephant in the room leaves one major suspect.
An AFL player who gets a leave pass on handing out throat shepherds, not that I can put a chopstick on his name!
Indeed. That has always been a question mark. If it is who I think it is, then the AFL are NOT going to want him coming under scrutiny, but the game needs to have him under scrutiny.
Andrew McKay got 4 weeks once for a 'don't argue'. And it didn't cost hos opponent 8 - 10 weeks on the sidelines.
jed lamb as tagger ,experience enough, stong enough, good size ,wat are people thoughts?
Pace, fitness and smarts might be an issue.
We could do worse. Our better taggers over the last few years have all been athletically gifted.
All week the press has been stuck into HAWKINS I can see him kicking a bag ,why do they always rev up aplayerr or the team we are about to play
It is like they do wait before we play some out of form idiot that they provide motivation. It was worse when it was Robert Walls who was doing it, though. He should have known better.
David Parkin used to hate it when Jack Elliott stirred the pot before the game. It seems it has become a habit because we were stupid enough to do it to ourselves. :(
Marchbank and Byrne should both be right to play so that gives us some flexibility, no one really put their hand up in the VFL but Smedts might replace Graham.
We might go better than some people think.
I reckon Smedts will play too...was probably the next best after OShea in the NB's and its vs his old team in Geelong which might fire him up to do well...
Was a reasonable player in the first 5-6 games he played but has slipped back since, I prefer him to Palmer but he needs to get a bit more intense and get some devil in his game.
His skills are quite good but gives the ball up too easily at times when contesting...
I think that Smedts offers us more than Graham although neither of them are world beaters.
Graham gives it a good crack but his skills are average and he's a bit slow, Smedts seems to have a bit of flair which we are sadly lacking.
I think Smedts is still lacking confidence in his body, given all his issues, and is holding back a little. But I like him as a player. And I think he is still trying to figure out where he fits in.

As for the Cats, some decent outs - hys Stanley (Omitted), Daniel Menzel (General Soreness), Mark Blicavs (Ankle), Steven Motlop (Managed), Zach Guthrie (Omitted)
Menzel, Blicavs and Motlop in particular....
Blues by 20.
Motlop managed, Menzel soreness...Scott doesnt rate us much does he?....
Cam Guthrie and Scott Selwood...who will they tag?...Gibbs is an obvious choice but I reckon they may start a minder on Docherty rather than Murphy.
Should be fun and games with Gibbs probably trying to pick up Dangerman and I expect Kerridge to get time on him too...
Big chance for Charlie Curnow to do some damage with Casboult and Harry to get the two taller defenders and Charlie to get Mackie or Stewart who I think he should be able to do well on..
Interesting one is Charlie - in a very positive way. Height, spring, marking prowess, athleticism - remind you of anyone?
Who is a comparable player at ANY other Club?
Reckon the coaches have had enough of him missing a team mate with a pass or just plain giving it to the opposition. Kerridge is next. ;)
Yep...in trouble is NickG and a big chance to be moved on at years end if he cant start fixing his disposal errors especially that lack of a left foot.
Yeah. Nick's gone I reckon.
Be a great pick-up for the NB's.
Again stiff, name one of our lads who doesn't have disposal issues, seriously!
Yeah, probably a bit stiff.
But he is not going to get any better is he?
So, give a younger bloke a chance.
Nick will never be better than a damn good VFL player.
still makers him a pretty good footballer.
He's only 22 and has never been given a lengthy run in the 1s despite inevitably been serviceable, at worst.
Granted will never be a Judd or Dusty or Selwood, but hey...
ok, so we discard hin and pick up a kid at pick 30 or 50 or whatever....
Graham goes ok (with upside imo in spite of hair cut), we know that, the kid is a total raffle.
Nicky hasnt done enough with opportunities. His delivery into forward 50 has been poor. We needed him to step up here and he didn't deliver. I am not sure whether he will get another shot - funny thing is he has the tools to deliver the ball correctly into forward 50 but he keeps muffing it.
Nick should just follow his captain's lead and go with the 16 metre short passes. Sideways, backwards he'll get that efficiency right up.
Be fair MBB, 17-18m on a good day!
Two weeks ago, Graham in the open and free tried his best to spot up 20m targets who were also open and free but kept missing them by 15m! ;D
Once could be considered an accident, but twice in one game is a suicide attempt!
Players can get a leave pass for missing under pressure, or missing a target who is dodging and weaving. But when you are 30m in the open on the fast break, and the target is 30m away from their nearest opponent, a kick splitting the difference between the target and the opponent is unforgivable! Not even Casboult would survive that, and he's a miracle survivor!
Again, he's not Robinson Carusoe. Easy to highlight the bad without mentioning the good.... we all can be guilty of that.
Graham is one of several players at Carlton who have survived because we've been so poor, he's a very pedestrian footballer who would struggle to get a game at most AFL sides.
Anyway, we've dropped him and included White so much of a muchness, White has very average foot skills as well.
Is Byrne named for the NB's by the way?
No. As I understand it, he was not quite 100%, so we decided not to risk him. He will play next week.
Nuh. His groin injury must still be niggling a little.
True, but you have to have a trick that keeps you viable, if Graham is outside running linking he has to hit targets, it is a non-negotiable!
In the seniors hopefully.
I'm I mad or is there anyone else that thinks White might get a tagging role on Danger?
Done some decent roles on gun mids from time to time.
Maybe, but good thinking. Geelong's second tier are average, break even on Dangerwood and they'll panic.
Expect the cats to get an amazing run with frees though, they do every time against us.
The
Panel don't
Review the Carlton
Match. At least they haven't in the past decade or so. Definitely not when we've sustained a serious injury. OK navy goggle comment, but seriously... >:(
Fair chance White will put time into one of the stars. He has performed well in this role from time to time. Speed will be the downside, toughness and effort the upside.
Go new Blues
B Tom Williamson , Jacob Weitering , Caleb Marchbank
HB Lachie Plowman , Liam Jones , Sam Docherty
Would this be one of the youngest, most talented back 6 going?
I think we should play SPS and Cunningham on Dangerfield and Sellwood, it would be good for their education and give them an idea of where they eventually need to be.
We'll most probably lose anyway, we should try and get as much out of the game as we can.
Looking forward to seeing my first match for a few weeks after my trip to deepest northern Australia. A tough one but go Blues, I fancy an upset! :)
With North's win we're down to 17th :( and (up) to Pick 2. ???
Welcome back.
It's a season for strange results cookie. The footy gods might just be on our side. I prey they've had a word to the green gang ;). I'm sure it'll help that I've tipped the cats too....
Welcome back Cookie....hope you are right about the upset....... :-X
I was wondering where you'd got to and I suspected an outback adventure :)
Welcome back, you're just in time for an upset!
We play...6th, 8th, 9th and 12th after the cats tonight which doesn't look too bad until you look further into it.
6th - Sydney (away)
9th - West Coast (away)
8th - Bombers (who always lift against us)
and
12th - Hawks (Who we haven't beaten since 2005) That team included some blokes that played in our last premiership! (Kouta, Campo)
FWIW, Lions play Kangas, Dogs, Suns, Dees, and Eagles with only the last 2 not at the gabba.
Still a shot at the spoon from here! :-[
Yes, I was also wondering the same. Welcome back cookie.
The only upset brewing tonight will be my tummy upset - should hit by about half time I reckon.
I'm not sure how people are thinking we're a chance. Anyhoo..............
Touhy playing his 108th consecutive game.
We're a game and 10 points in percentage ahead of them.
I think they'd have to win two to go above us (unless we really went to pieces).
I don't think that's something that would be in their interests ;)
Thanks guys. Just back from trip to Gulf Savannah ending up in Karumba. A few dramas including a wrecked gearbox which was fixed in Blackall. Anyway, we're looking a bit shakey atm but not giving up yet!
Wasn't in their interests last time when they beat us to rise from 18th to 17th allowing us to pick up Weitering, leaving them with Schache....but it happens.
FWIW, i reckon they'll beat the suns and the kangas.
If our % takes a hit like this every week, might be a non-issue.
