I know this is a little off topic (and sorry to everybody if this is the wrong place to bring this up)...but I have just written a book!
It's called "For The Record" and looks at the development of Australian Pop Culture. There are unique chapters dedicated to every year from 1964 to 2017. Each chapter looks at Births, Deaths, News Events, Entertainment News, Sport and the Music that became the soundtrack to our lives.
Obviously there are many references to Carltons success over the decades with scores, facts and figures (but it's not entirely a sport book).
The notes and trivia I have compiled is the information I used when producing a radio show on Gold 104 called "My Generation with Jono Coleman" and "Classic 9 At 9" on Triple M and K Rock. For the first time, everything is about to be released.
As we get closer to publication, I'll keep you all in the loop.
Absolutely Brilliant achievement
Sounds like an interesting read, great stuff WW
Great achievement!
It sounds like it will be a very good read. Make sure you do keep us in the loop :)
Well done Willie, remember listening to My Generation with JC.... as the others have said sounds like a great read and you must have had some fun getting it together.
Yep, sounds good. Looking forward to it.
Thanks WW.
What an achievement to publish a book. Congratulations WW.
Funnily enough it's written in my era. I'm familiar with both radio shows.
I look forward to details about the launch of For The Record. I hope it's a great seller.
I'm always amazed to hear about the experiences, achievements, and expertise of fellow Bluebaggers!! Great stuff.
Top stuff WW, sounds like it will be a great read!!
Good one Willee.
A gutsy thing to take on. I hope it's big success for you.
Thanks everybody. Six months ago I never thought of even attempting it...
Oh, today I am five years cancer free too! This is a really important milestone - never thought I'd get here either!!
Congrats on your milestone Willie, you are a real fighter, lots to look forward to for you and your family....you will need to do a revised edition of your book
in a couple years time when we win a flag...you can call it the premiership edition... ;)
All the best Willie - well done!
Look forward to your book. :)
Well done WEt Willie great achievement to finish where many only have thoughts, could be a great read lets us know how to grab a copy
Thanks again everybody...I lovin' the Premiership Edition - lock it in!!
Congrats a great effort.
Any reason why its from 1964? The Beatles?
1957 on, would have inclued JOK, Joye, Lonie Lee, Rebb, Chester, Thunderbirds, Atlantics etc.
Anyway you have to start somewhere.
Look forward to it.
That's a great question.
In radio, the line in the sand tends to be 1964 because of The Beatles and the cultural change and impact they created.
If you hear a station claiming to play hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s - it usually only goes back to 1964.
"Nostalgia stations" like Magic used to go earlier but avoided the later Beatles era.
Different formats for different tastes
Great effort, WW. It's quite a buzz getting your first work published, then your first royalty cheque (with my first cheque I was able to shout the missus fish and chips at Seaford! ;)).
Agree that R&R had it's popular birth with the Beatles. If you wanted to be pedantic you could argue that R&R had it's roots in R&B/Soul dating back to the 40s which many artists of the 50s and 60s say was their greatest influence (eg Elvis/Bill Haley/Chuck Berry/Buddy Holly).
Again, mate, huge congratulations. Massive achievement.
OK Baggers. Do tell. If you're happy to share, that is. What's your area of expertise? I'm assuming you have authored a publication.
It's so interesting discovering the marvellous achievements of fellow Bluebaggers.
Baggers I like the R&B and "Jump" music of the 1940s, what I think was the precursor to R&R, particularly Big Joe Turner and to a degree Louis Jordan, followed on by Howlin' Wolf. I was fortunate to have discovered them early in my teenage years and have listened to this stuff on and off ever since.
Thank you, LN. Happy to share. Started writing my first novel when I was 12... but when my father found out he discouraged it somewhat violently! Didn't pick up the pen again until I was well into my 30s. Yep, my first work was published about 8 years ago and the next in a few months. My favourite genre is supernatural thrillers with an underlying social justice theme. I have 3 other works ready for 'rewrites and editing', one of which is being turned into a screenplay. My 'real job' is as a psychotherapist specialising in men's issues around addictions and anxiety. :)
Wow, Fluffy One... now you're cookin'. Couple of real classy names there. Although he was more Jazz/Scat, Cab Calloway also inspired many later rockers. Jordan was James Brown's inspiration. The energy of these cats was amazing.
Incredible to hear of the hidden talents among the CS community ! Great stuff WW & Baggers !
good luck & WW, definitely keep me informed on the publishing & availablility. It's a topic I would be very interested in.
cheers
Thanks everybody!
The hidden talents idea would be a fantastic thread...
X 2
Now that's a great idea
What a super achievement Baggers. Congratulations. I tilt my hat (navy CFC version) to you.
Fancy starting a novel at age 12. I bet you were a clever creative kid. O:-)
Your efforts are truly inspirational. I hope it brings you great satisfaction in your journey, and lasting change for those you work with.
GOOD WORK INDEED!
Great achievement Baggers. Well done mate.
You're too generous! I tilt my 'navy' hat to those who make a career of authoring. Requires mongrel persistence and belief to get published. With my first work I lost count around 55 knock backs before getting a yes. The funniest knock back was from a NY publisher who returned my covering letter and sample pages with a big, hand written in red crayon, NO...
What about you, LN, what's you area of expertise?
Second that. Well done Baggers.
Great! I was born in 65, so I'll be buying a copy when I see it.
I've been fortunate to have worked in two related health areas. Nursing and Midwifery, and now Clinical psychology.
My practice, similar to yours, involves working with a vulnerable population. In my case within Child Protection Services. My specialty is working with those children, parents and systems impacted by the inherent, often intergenerational, trauma and attachment difficulties.
In terms of publication, I had a taste as part of my academic pursuits. Needless to say I hot footed it out of academia as soon as I could. I found the knock backs frustrating initially :-[ Then I realised my manuscript just wasn't that good in the world of peer-reviewed journals. A humbling experience. I no longer rushed to open mail from the Editors, although published my research in the end. The process indeed requires persistence and a robust ego to say the least.
That's why what our friend Wet Willie and yourself have achieved is so admirable. I can't help but wonder how many more Bluebaggers have such achievements (for another thread perhaps).
"For The Record: Australian Pop Culture 1964 -2017" was finally published today.
It covers the facts, figures and fun that made the soundtrack to our lives.
And I cover the success of Carlton a bit too!!
If you want to see what it looks like go to www.fortherecordbook.com.au
Some nice work there Willie(Steve), hope you have some stuff about " the Johnnys" in the book, one of my fav Aus bands.....
Nice CV in the Industry you have there, did you ever do any work with a guy called Jim Barbour?
Great effort to get the book out after all you have been through and hope it is very successful and you can start getting the premiership edition on the drawing board... ;)
Agree EB. Best of luck Steve. Hope you smash some sales records.
That is bloody good stuff, Steve. I wish you every possible success. I just checked out your link and nearly fell out of my chair!!! We worked together at GG in the very early 90s... hahaha, if that don't beat all. Great to see your mischievous face again. I'll PM you... amazing... and now I recall all our chats about the Mighty BlueBaggers! :o :o
I'm looking forward to my copy arriving; it may help to piece together some vague recollections of the late 60s and early 70s :P
Thanks for all your kind words everybody!
I'm currently run off my feet with orders, which is very flattering...
Elwood, I do know Jim Babour (lovely bloke) from when I was invited to Swinburn to talk to his radio classes.
Baggers, what a wonderfully small world. 3GG rocked, back in the day!!
Sure did. Just so others can know what we're rabbiting on about... WW (Steve) and I worked at 3GG together at the beginning of the 90s -- just found out through this site!!! -- he was the Program Manager -- in charge of music/dj's/programming etc -- and I was the Ops Mngr. WW wouldn't tell you this but I can, he had that station sounding absolutely brilliant, had a natural flair and ability for what was a progressive/up/lively sound and went on to be very successful in highly competitive markets.
