Title: 2018 Rd 11: Pre Game Prattle: Carlton vs Sydney

Another game I will not be able to see live. I certainly cannot appreciate the way we've been scheduled this year.

I'm disappointed I probably wont get there either,
Would have to leave work early to get there on time and after all the time off I've had recently dont really want to stretch the friendship too far.

I'm interested but we have been so unpredictable it's hard to speculate or look at what might unfold, for me anyway. I'll just wait and see what actually unfolds and hope we are super competitive.

I am dirty I cant go.
Dont get to go to the footy much these days, so I hate missing out when the circus comes to town.
For what it's worth I don't think we are without hope.
I'd like to see us go to the more defensive style again on the small SCG. If we can tie things up and make it a scrap we could be in with a chance, but then there's the Swan's forward line to contend with... Jones needs to stick with Buddy like glue. He has the tank, he cant be leaving him like he has a tendency to do to cover other folks match ups, because Buddy has a knack of finding the ball.

Bolton said he will play in his interview both midfield and forward. McKay isn't playing.

It’s refreshing to hear a coach, and particularly a Carlton coach, talk frankly and articulately about the team, players and processes.

I reckon we’re in with a chance  :)

If so, mind boggling....

12.50 with the bookies - that's worth a wager imo!!

His form has been rubbish.

His form didn't warrant selection, and it hasn't improved.

If we want someone crumbing cheap goals out the back it can be Wright, SPS or Fisher!

More importantly, we are playing at the SCG, a ground where a kick into full forward often comes off the HBF!

He won't take defenders to the contest!

Cripps is sore, expect him to spend more time resting forward.

Playing against Sydney, you need players who chase defensively!

It was either him or Kerr, and Kerr works 300% harder!

Sydney's ruck inventory is decimated, we could ruck Dow and probably win the clearances!

It sounds like McKay is being "managed" back in the VFL and coming back after the bye.

I'd prefer someone in for O'Shea.

Agree on OShea , probably his best game in terms of less errors, have heard he is very popular amongst the playing group
and trains very well, maybe that gives him some extra runs on the board when it comes to tight selections....

He's averaging 2 goals a game, he can't be going too badly, and never missed hitting the scoreboard. Last week was his first bad game. Defy any kid to do any good in that congestion last week albeit he was certainly the worst of our 3 forwards. Sounds like he's just going back for the week, if i'm hearing the video right, and coming back after the bye. Of course, if Kerr plays well and Levi is coming back after the bye it might be hard to put him in. In the VFL McKay hit the packs hard so it might be a confidence thing.

Thats how Curnow's career started and Carrots before that. They made lots of mistakes but they trained there asses off and set the standards. Now, Curnow is the most respected and one of the first 2 picked every week (probably second behind Crippa). I guess the problem is when you play in defence like OShea does, and you make mistakes, they are costly and are amplified amongst the faithful.

Even if it was going to be dry I'd go Garlett on the SCG ahead of one of the other talls!

The best way to deal with Franklin is to give him no time and space to get rolling.

Best way to deal with Buddy is make sure it doesnt get down his end of the ground.....if he gets enough opportunities then it doesnt matter who plays on him......
We need another quicker opportunist up forward, Garlett might be handy....

Garlett couldn't get near it in his last few games at afl level. We played Cuningham and Lang as small forwards against the Cats, and neither of them had any influence. SPS went down there a bit as well, and he was clearly the best of them, even though he missed his few opportunities to hit the scoreboard. It is a real weakness at the moment, hopefully Pickett can come back and give us something in that role after the bye

There's more to being an AFL player then just being quick.

I'm very close to writing him off from what I've seen. Doesn't have the desire to play at the top level based on his lack of output in the games he has played. Lucky to touch it half a dozen times and is a witches hat defensively.

Sets a bad example for the other kids the way he goes about it.

Was a speculative pick at best, lazy and chooses when to put in. Fark him off at years end IMO, no more hanging onto crap trucks. Lang in the same boat, if they don't show something straight up, show em the door.

Harsh on Lang, no preseason, on the comeback from an ankle injury, I'm not a fan but we need to see what he can do in the second half of the season and what he can do next year with a full preseason under his belt before reaching conclusions

I don't like the forecast. We have yet to play a decent game in the wet this year. Their vry small forward line does not fit our defence very well. Maybe we will need to bring in another small.

In case Kerr or Curnow didn't come up for some reason. Then they'd have to put him in.

He probably felt more comfortable too when Levi was in there with him as a big body as he didn't have the responsibility of being the no.1 forward.

Liked BBs interview today - it was good to see the acknowledgement of some things and elaborating/different slant on a couple of others:
 - all kids will need a spell in the 2s at some stage - it is just part of their development
 - the kids are playing more games in the 1s than they would at a stronger club due to necessity
 - media brought up the priority pick - not in our thinking at this stage
 - Jack will spend time in the midfield (but not much)
 - Q re: Weitering basically told the journo to look at last weeks game, because he was OK
 - was happy with the back 6 last week

Having said that, i don't expect us to get too close tomorrow night even with the rain.

We need good footballers especially ones who kick the ball well and are composed... some of our half backs are either injury prone or not good enough.
I'd rather Newman over Mullet, OShea and Byrne....Daisy and Simpson will both retire, Shaw wont be at the club and Williamson appears to have serious back issues.....

I said Lang wasn't going to be at his best this season because of the ankle injury and I reckon its showing.

Garlett is a quandry.  He looked better early on.  Hes a draftee so its an automatic 2 years, and I think hes shown enough attributes to make it.  Don't forget that he basically had a year off last season because of the mental health aspect.  Its hard work playing for Carlton at the moment, and Garlett has looked more deer in the headlights rather than lazy, and SPS has done similar at times.

I think we need to be a bit patient, and give these two some time, rather than write them off altogether.

Garlett has shown some glimpses of good footy and I back Bolton to get them going.

Garlett went back to Perth because his brother had what was thought to be a terminal illness - nothing to do with mental health Thry.

He's still finding his feet as an AFL player and I'd cut him some slack this season.

IMHO it has everything to do with mental health and perhaps putting your career on hold to spend time with your brother is more about his own mental health than his brothers.  Let's not forget he didn't jump ship to a WA footy club he took the year off because focussing on footy might have been hard (fair enough too).

He did go back and play with south Fremantle but that's besides the point as AFL clubs don't have as much wiggle room as the next tier down.  Less scrutiny and more time to go through life and focus on what's important.

The club publish a Garlett story to go with Indigenous round then don't select him to play!

Ducks and Drakes, I expect a late change! ;)

Its just one more reason why the fans are losing faith in the game.

Garlett will be getting a game for one reason and one reason alone.

Indigenous round.  Its a nice story, but his form has been putrid, and its really hard to make a case to play J. Garlett and IMHO sends everyone the wrong message regarding indigenous round.

Of course, I love the story about him painting boots, and giving them away after a win.  The cynic in me would see us sell off the boots to the highest bidder, but I digress.

In fairness to Garlett, I think the SCG probably suits him and us as KPF's not playing out of the goal squares are mostly wasted. Playing on the wing and covering lots of turf, occasionally helping to run down Buddy would be ideal, his VFL form wasn't too bad last game and some of my friends thought he was among our better players.

At the moment he doesn't like being hunted, he just needs to bring a bit more aggression to the game when he's got the football as opposed to when he is chasing players down which is generally fine.

Jarrod Garlett
Stats: 18 disposals, 4 clearances
From the coach: Jarrod played mainly on the wing but also up forward, where he used his speed on the outside a couple of times really well and had a good combination of contested and uncontested possessions. We’ll keep giving him exposure on the wing and also as a pressure forward.

It took Jack 3 weeks with these sorts of numbers to come back.

You would be wondering what Mullet might be thinking, with respect to why he isn't getting a game particularly after being the non playing emergency last week.

Thry, what is the point of arguing based on numbers if you haven't watched the game live?

The stats although a contributing factor are far from being the whole story. My mates who I trust and who went to the VFL game tell me Garlett was one of the better players despite the low stats, they thought if he worked harder he'd be a class above VFL level. One had Garlett ahead of SoJ for a recall, because despite the good numbers from SoJ he still burned team-mates with poor disposal quite a bit. If SoJ does that on the small SCG the Swans are just one clean kick away from scoring.
