Serving for the match in the French quarters....
Will move to #5 in the world regardless...
dropped her serving at 5-4 for the match, broke again immediately.
Now serving for it at 6-5.
Wins 6-3 7-5.
Now plays the US 17yo Anisimova who cleaned up Halep with staggering ease....
Big chance to go the whole way is Ash.
Yessss, thanks for the update Fly
Love this girls style, just getting on with it.
Krgyiou & Tomic - TAKE NOTE!
She is developing into a real star.
You're right about Curious and Comic. Bloody idiots.
If she wins the event, she'll be # two in the world!
3 points away from victory....
Took her 6 match points, but Barty got there in the end, winning final set 6-3.
Into the French Open final. ;D
She should be the raging favourite.
The Czech kid is only ranked 38 and raw at 19 yo.
Smart tennis and a great attitude.
Let’s hope she can get it done in the final.
Barty is pretty impressive under the pump, what a contrast compared to the other wankers Australia offers up. I might actually return to watching tennis if they delivery a few more kids like this.
A few more of Barty's and far less of the other knobs please!
The thing is the way she plays and goes about it, you would watch her even if she doesn't look like winning!
Crazy match - 5 zip up in the first then went to sleep - lost the first in a tiebreak.
Down 3 zip in the second peels off 6 games in a row.
Down 2-1 (break down) in the third, then peels off 5 games in a row and has 0-40 to win - blows three match points.
then 40-0 on serve, wins it at 40-30.
Two in the world will make life moving through draws much easier going forward.
Very likeable, humble young lady too.
Teenagers making finals is always scary. Often have ability but haven't been round long enough to get up the rankings. Semi final scared me for that reason, especially as the other girl knocked off Halep in the previous round.
The way Barty has picked up clay is extraordinary, but relative to the Czech she must still be less "up to date" on that surface.
I thought the variable conditions helped Barty last game, she handled the wind and drizzle much better than the US kid, particularly serving into the wind, the US kid obviously preferred playing in perfect Florida conditions or indoors!
6-1 6-3. Just a great effort. Well done Ash.
Hardly raised a sweat
Fantastic.
Australia finally has a champion tennis player again. A player that just goes out there and plays the game because she loves it.
Take notice Nick the Dick.
.. and that idiot Tomic.
What was it again? A 46 year drought? Great result Ash. Thank the lord you didn’t decide to leave and be a cricketer for the rest of your life. Only 23 years old, so you still have many years left to show the world what it is you can really do. ????
Her style of play is even better suited to grass...
She'll be seeded one or two - makes life a heck of a lot easier in the first few rounds!
Fantastic win and appropriate reward for effort ????????
A class act on and off the court!
Well done Ash ????????
Champion player and person.
10 year career from now - 2 or so slams a year....20+ EASY ;)
No pressure though ;D
Thank the gods we have an impressive indigenous Aussie on the international circuit, not another d1ckhead/embarrassment like ...well, you know who they are.
Bravo Ash. Top effort and looking forward to seeing a lot more of your craft over the years.
Only one negative, she barracks for the Tiggers. Never too late, Ash... we'll welcome you with open arms at BlueBaggers land... :) :)
I've a feeling she won't have a long career, she comes across as a person who wants a balanced life, far from having a monolithic approach like some of the tennis robots!
It came across like a win as a consequence of not worrying too much about it, yet still a desire to be professional and respectful! Almost Swed like!
I think that her break from tennis and brief flirtation with cricket shows that Ash has a pretty good idea about what’s best for her. That said, I’d be surprised if she doesn’t contest more than a few grand slam titles over the next four or five years ... and I hope she wins more than her share over a much longer career.

Could well be #1 by Wimbledon!!
Gavrilova at #73 has sure lost her way of late - new coach needed Daria - and she's a Blues' girl!!
She is. Top effort and so happy for her.
What a star, and speaks as well as anybody in world sport, its all about her team, hard work and doing the little things well. So proud of her and Hannah Green and Sally Fitzgibbon today, we have a lot of female stars of world sport at the moment
Ash is the top seed for Wimbledon. How awesome would it be if she won ? Just wow.
How long is it since there’s been an Australian top seed?
Grass is arguably her best surface so she must have a red hot chance of taking this title. Let’s hope so!
Women's or men's?
Sam stosur might have been seeded once upon a time after she won her us open.
Even so, she may not have been seeded 1 thanks to serena being top of her game then.
Great to see Ash off to a good start in the 1st set of her 2nd Rnd match at the US Open.
Barty is an anomaly, in that most champions have a real trick, some super skill used as a weapon that sets them apart. Watching Barty she has no real weakness but no major weapon either, just very good all round basics that let her leverage an opponents weakness.
Most of the girls have a huge drop-off on one side of their body or the other, or they have power without fitness, not Barty she has the full package.
If she can triumph on clay, she can win on anything....
down a break in the second....she's only won 3 from 12 break point chances....
Tough gig, like a Vic club playing AFL in Perth!
After a 1000 break point chances she got one just in time. 5-5 second set.
I have to go out, but I can't find a radio station broadcasting the match! :-[
https://www.usopen.org/en_US/scores/stats/2232.html
How many break and match points can Barty fk up. That last game was frustrating to watch. Tie-breaker now.
Won 6-2 7-6.
got the win.
39 unforced errors in 2 sets.
She won't beat anyone half decent unless she sorts that out.
Alot of $hit unforced errors on those 18 break point chances.
I presume she has a coach?
Those numbers are Sammy Stosuresque in their magnitude!
Hopefully it's a case of starting a tournament slowly, like many do, and hit a peak in the 2nd week. Let's hope that's the case.
Sadly, the trend continued.
She looks a bit lost at the moment, does she lack some guidance about dealing with crowds and expectations? She seems to have a reasonable coaching crew, but there is something getting into her head at the moment because the problems are not really the opponent, although I notice opponents have taken to screaming at her aggressively and in an exaggerated manner. Maybe Ash is a bit introverted and they have picked up on that!
Although I suspect that she is extremely disappointed, her presser was all class. She remarked that she is very proud of her Grand Slam achievements, and so she should be.
Hopefully she and her team will work on eradicating unforced errors.
Barty played carp all tournament - clearly something's amiss/askew whatever.
Those stats are worthy of a top 300 player, nothing more.
In fairness to Barty she found a way win a few games ugly, not something Top 300 players usually do with numbers like that!
I think the poor stats are more of a sign of inconsistency than a sign of a lack of ability.
Another thing, I've seen more than once many sportspeople get to the pinnacle of a sport once or twice and then become satisfied. It's like they have proven to themselves they can compete with the best and have nothing left driving them, often they then get labelled one hit wonders, but it doesn't mean they aren't still capable if they can be focused and motivated. What keeps Federer at the top, is it just his skills or more likely his motivation and drive?
Wasn't questioning ability. Was questioning current performance.
She made the final 32 and lost to the 18th seed, where does top 300 come from?
In 2 sets, 39 unforced errors, 0 from 9 break points won. 18 games played.
That's worse than big Sammy at her terrible worst.
She goes back to World no.1 again now.
Ah, the irony!
Hard to see anyone beating big, bad Serena this tourney.
Not sure she was ready to be no.1 yet but sometimes that's just the way it works out. Been a little flat since she won the French Open. Probably just a mental letdown.
What grit, if only more of our players showed that!
Barty will be a heavy favourite. And she's playing well.
The grass will favour her game style - mixes it up very well. H2H favours Barty too.
https://www.stevegtennis.com/head-to-head/women/Ashleigh_Barty/Karolina_Pliskova/
Kerber played better than I expected - way better. A good match, kerber would have beaten most other opponents with that form.
Pliskova's win over Sabalenka might have been her 'final'?
The girl will take some beating. No attitude dancing.
This should be an easy one for Ash, has been untroubled in this tournament thus far. She means business.
Business-like is a good way of summing her up. In AFL terms, I reckon she’s like Joel Selwood. She can talk well, but obviously would prefer to avoid doing so. She’s all about team: she talks about “We did this or that” including her support team rather than talking about herself. She’s serious and determined. She’s basically the opposite of Kyrgios in every way.
41 years is a long time to wait .... at least it's not a williams sister. She's "uncluttered". Believe she deserves it as well
Barty got a fight on her hands.
About to serve for the match. Come on Ash.
Pliskova saves it
Ash's first serve has deserted her. Headed for 3 sets.
The crowd is definitely cheering louder when Pliskova wins a point, they dont like us convicts.
Ash chocking
Ashleigh Barty - Wimbledon Champion
All tennis crowds cheer for another set.
Great performance. But I wonder why someone who is so freakishly blessed with hand/eye coordination doesn’t have a topspin backhand. Maybe her ability to win without one emphasises what a competitor she is.
That ended up a fine match. Ash just wore her down. Take a bow young lady !!
Indeed a thriller, both ladies fought it right out.
I can see a new uncirculated carded 50 cent coin coming with the Wimbledon ladies plate as the central piece. The RAM know how to cash in on anything commercial.
Not a big fan of tennis in general but I don't mind watching closely matched top seeds as long as there is little grunting.
From what I can see the Aust Open is following the global pandemic trend and greatly favouring players who have had the better run-in preparation regardless of seeding.
The pandemic seems to be the great leveller!
We may be brothers, Spotted One. Exactly the same here. If the grunting starts, the channel is changed or the teev is muted.
What a great final, either would have been worthy winners.
Barty is pure professional, one of the best I've ever seen, a lot of men should be taking notes!
Collins would have been a worthy winner? Wasn't she 5 - 1 up in the second set? Barty killed her.
Yep, ripper final. That fight back from the Barty was sensational. Both their media speeches post game were all class... Collins admitted she'd have to add more variety to her game, which she acknowledged that the Barty has. Nice touch from TA having Yvonne ready to present... they were due to get something right ;)
@Baggers Yes it's funny, watching I could almost sense Collins learning on the run, she knew what she needed to do to compete but seemed resigned to not being able to implement it on the fly, yet she never gave up. With good fortune she probably has a long career and retires with a brace of titles, most do not realise it was Collins first ever grand slam final.
At one stage it looked like Collins had overcome, but Courier and Dokic kept telling us momentum would swing, but it was hard for non-tennis fans to see that happening in the moment. But the experts were right, you can't beat the math and all things return to baseline sooner or later. Courier asserted the test wouldn't be if it happened, but if when it happened could Barty take advantage. Could she take it, she slayed it!
At the very end we momentarily saw the inner beast, watching the footage Barty said "That's not me!", but it is and it sort of explains why she is different now to when she first played.
For me, Barty is uber professional, she exhibits the best traits of her various opponents and reminds me of Borg and a mature Fedora. For a Sci Fi reference, maybe without being an evil version she is Women's tennis version of "The Borg", learning from every opponent and returning fire!
Barty's ability to recognise, adapt and counter her opponent's strengths is outstanding. Collins dug deep to get back in the contest but Barty took it in her stride and methodically dismantled Collins's game. Well done Ash, a very worthy champion ... and what a humble, respectful, gracious and loyal person she is!
A couple of years ago I gave up on Nick Kyrgios and vowed never to support him. He is now the voice of reason and one of the tennis players who understand that the game needs to involve the spectators. Purcell and Ebden would have been worthy winners but the Special Ks were just too good.
Well done Nick and Thanasi 👏
And not a grunt to be heard from any of the six players on court :)
Superb Rafael ... no wonder he likes Australia.
Helps when we kicked the best player in the world out of the country for him.
When did we boot Federer?
As an aside, can Medvedev ever be No.1? I didn't watch all the Mens final, but I heard at one stage Medvedev was complaining about the ball boys, is that serious, is that bullying, and did he cry when he didn't get his way?
In some way the men's final must have mirrored the women's, with what I've read this morning an ultimate professional unpicking a limited trick pony.
Federer is ranked 17 and might not play again.
Medvedev is a gun but the pressure, the crowd and the 2nd or 3rd best player of all time did him in.
Medvedev can certainly reach #1 - he's only 25, and with Federer gone, Nadal on borrowed time, and Djokovic 34 yo and likely to be banned from other tournaments because of his vax stance, Medvedev looks like the next most likely to win a slew of Slam titles. Thiem and Zverev are others in the conversation to step up, with Tsitsipas is a step or two behind them.
He does need to learn how to keep his cool - as soon as he started mouthing off last night, his concentration dropped and the unforced errors multiplied. And stirring up the crowd only poured fuel on the fire.
Abusing ball boys is hardly a great start to win over the local crowd. :P
To be fair, all he did was request that the boys at the end of the court have an equal number of balls each when he was serving - he didn't abuse them. Medvedev was bemused that they had to run to each other and hand the balls over, not throw them. But it was another example of a clumsy approach to a simple request.
Is there an asterix on Barty's win given Serena was unable to compete because of injury? Of course not. Same goes for Nadal's win: Djokovic was absent for medical reasons too, although in his case he could have easily avoided them by getting the damn jab. The only way there should be an asterix next to Nadal's achievement is as a reminder of what a dickhead Novax is.
Mmmm, having symmetrical balls, very important.
Sounds like just another excuse for failure, "It wasn't my fault, I lost because the lad had asymmetrical balls!" ::)
Mind you, if he is so inclined to be focussed on that sort of thing, I can see why a lad having an odd number of balls might be very distracting, 1 or 3 is not a natural number! :o
They should change Medvedev's nickname to "Boo Hoo!"
Barty would have chopped Serena.
Barty would have chopped any opponent, and Serena is not the player she was.
Exactly. Serena in her prime would be a very interesting match up with Barty at the moment.
Bartys a tricky player and no current player has been able to be consistent enough to get over her change of pace, varying spins and in particular her heavy slice. Barty is a generational defensive player that frustrates the majority of her opponents to the point they lose belief they have enough consistent weapons to get past her.
Playing offensively against a crafty defensive and most of all consistent player is very hard and even harder on the big stage. You need to have strong belief in your ability. Any doubts and you’re gone.
Serena and Graf before her are players that had the tools to beat Barty but of the current crop there is not that sort of offensive quality and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Barty win multiple slams if she can maintain her current gameplan.
Barty will struggle at the US Open, the lightweight tennis balls used by the girls in US tournaments are more conducive to players who hit the ball flat like the Williams sisters, or like Barty's most recent opponent Collins. The lower mass of the ball means Barty's changes of pace have less effect on unsettling the opponents game.
Barty has shown that perhaps her greatest strength is the ability to adapt her game and strategy to manage different opponents - most of the other girls on tour are machines that do it the same way.
If she stays fit and with her style of game, Barty may well get to Flushing Meadow with a Grand Slam on offer.
I would imagine that if she snaffles the French in May, and Wimbledon in June, she will spend the next three months leading up to the US Open making sure she knows how to deal with different balls.
Sure, but you can't beat the physics, and it is perhaps not so much about what Barty does but what opponents can do in the US that they can't do elsewhere! ;)
"Ash Barty’s celebratory sip of beer during a TV interview following her historic victory in the Australian Open has been dobbed into the alcohol marketing watchdog.
The Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code (ABAC) investigated how Barty’s TV toast with a Corona during her post-match panel interview with Channel 9 came about following a viewer complaint, claiming the cheers with beers glorified and glamorised alcohol.
The complainant also questioned if the moment was a PR stunt.
The ABAC sets standards for the responsible content and placement of alcohol marketing in Australia.
“I think the segment glorified and glamorised alcohol and was very deceptive if it was indeed a paid promotion. Why else are they doing it if it wasn’t a paid stunt? It’s poor when many children were up watching the final and Ash Barty is a role model for many girls too,” the complaint read.
The ABAC code states alcohol marketing must not show or encourage irresponsible or offensive behaviour related to the consumption or presence of booze nor have strong appeal to minors."
Have you ever read a greater crock of crap in your life!!!
2022 what a time to be alive...
Nothing ceases to amaze me these days, the world average IQ is dropping by the day.
So having a beer to celebrate a Grand Slam victory is encouraging irresponsible behaviour? Its not like she went 3 sheets to the wind and went on national tv making a fool of herself like Brendan Fevola.
Melbourne Cup celebrations? TVs "Front Bar"? Bathurst 1000 win? Test Cricket victory?
Complete wankers and oxygen thieves
That quote is from the complainant, not anyone in authority.
Wowsers will be sanctimonious, that’s their calling 🙄
I wonder if there’s enough there to support a defamation action ... although Ash is probably not the type to sue dlckheads.
None of us should be shocked at the actions of fanatics, regardless of which side of the fence they sit, where an opportunity exists and opportunist exists.
We should probably be more shocked by people who are shocked that opportunistic stuff like this keeps happening!
Personally, the biggest offense on the night was the initial inference that Barty was expected to drink alone!
You are a gun Ash Barty, and thanks for the A-Grade gold star example you have been to all of humanity.
Happy retirement!
Is she allowed to have a beer now?
Carlton needs to sign her up for the next AFLW season.
It's sad to think that we won't see Ash on the court but good luck to her and well done on a very classy tennis career.
I wonder what she's got in mind :-\
I suspect that she'd play a little like Maddy Prespakis :)
Got a feeling she's going to spend most of her time bearing and raising little Bartys.....
Ash is Yellow / Black, although her besty Casey is Navy through and through.
Don’t rule out something in golf, AFLW, or a return to BBL. She is a sports nut who needs that next goal or challenge.
I think for Ash, it's tennis or nothing.
Something tells me it will be sport with kids, rather than sport for Ash herself.
Kez has got her number.
Remember that famous interview where she got a phone call during her presser. That was our AFLW captain on the other end.
