A good break for us...
https://www.watoday.com.au/sport/afl/mixed-news-for-fremantle-on-injuries-to-bennell-and-hogan-20190623-p520jf.html
And Walters on report?
In a lot of ways this is a real test for us. Have we really turned a corner, or ave we merely had a dead cat bounce? I hope we can really show what we can do.
Hogan, S Hill and possibly Walters all out, plus they traveled last week, we had the weeks break.......maybe the stars are aligning???
We're coming off the bye and may be flat to start with, need to ensure we're not too far behind (if at all) before we get going.
Also already out of consequence - Lobb, Taberner and Sandy!
Giving up 5 goal head starts to the other team is our MO....
Update: I'll be there at Optus!!
Go Baggers
I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you see!!!!
I watched the State of Origin last night.
I can't believe how hard that Optus ground stayed despite the deluge, we've already got too many blokes like SpecialK and others who are fragile!
Walters gets a week...
Beat me to it - a big out!
If he challenges he'll get off because it's only Carlton! ;D
Could also mean that they will take the opportunity to give him a week's rest? :)
They'll have a reasonably small forward line without Lobb, Taberner and now Hogan....McCarthy might come into the side. But I'd still keep Levi in the team as backup ruckman. Darcy is a huge man and troubled Gawn early on the weekend. They're also missing Pearce down back so if things go our way and the weather is fine, we could stretch them down back as well.
So we can expect the reserves as opposition, actually given their available list it's probably not far off reality! :-[
Massive out - Just pls dont appeal.
Walters like most teams we have no match up for. He excites the crowd like no other Docker. Rapt he wont play. Add in losing Hogan and S Hill we couldn't have picked a better time to play them.
But this is no 'just turn up play and return with the 4 points' They made us look like fools last year at Edihad. Lyon is a smart coach, he will have plans to cater for the outs - Cripps will have a minder and doubt Charlie will get the free run at the ball he got last week.
BUT this is the sort of game that we where we are at should win and not just get close. Just need to start very well and take the crowd out of it - that's half the battle.
Fox reporting Walters is appealing, will be heard at Tribunal tomorrow night. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets off with a fine
Setterfield gets two, everybody else gets fines. He'll get off.
We have Jones, Silvagni, Goddard & Kennedy pushing for selection. 26 into 22 doesn't go. There are going to be a number of players missing out which is a good place to be.
Freo won't have a tall forward line - Goddard isn't going to displace Weiters or Levi/Jones (Levi will play this week imo, Jones have a run in the NBs).
JSOS and Kennedy - I'd have them both in for Dow and LOB - but everyone will say they're too slow....at least they can both execute the basics of footy AND tackle.
That only happens after the get the football, which might be too rarely against fleet footed opponents! ;D
Unfortunately, it looks like rain on Sunday afternoon for Perth, 25kph wind with an 80% chance of showers, this diminishes our marking strength somewhat!
Walters got off unfortunately. I'd have thought headbutting someone was worth a week. Obviously not.
Chook raffle mate.
HTF is a headbutt deemed unintentional? Joke.
What a f'n disgrace....the AFL needs to intervene....what message does it send to the kids!!!! :-[ :-[
From the footage I've seen it looks like has two cracks at headbutting him but it's unintentional? ;D
Had another head butting charge 12 months ago, seems to have a head that involuntary gets attracted to other heads...
It's incredible how clumsy some of the most skilled players to ever lace up the boots can be. Fyfe, Ablett, Franklin etc.
Yes, it's amazing how they can get those incredible backwards overhead instantaneousness gravity defying thread the eye of the needle handballs away, but still fail to avoid an illegal static target with a fist, elbow or forehead, or trip onto, into or over a 85kg player lying on the ground! ::)
Terrific...Cripps and McKay are out this week. Cripps with a toe injury. Had it for a little while apparently, Harry with some injury.
Tanking !!!!!
If Teague wins too many games, it might make things awkward when they select a new coach.
Interchange: Thomas, Phillips, JSOS, Jones, Kennedy, SPS, Lang, Goddard.
Hard to get a handle on the "ins"....Goddard, Phillips and Jones? Already have Casboult in there. Surely they can't be serious with Lang?
No Cripps... :(...Fyfe and Mundy will tear us apart....
Something doesn't make sense to me.
Obviously its squads but...
Out. Tall forward.
In. 2 key backs and 1 ruck. ??
Why not Kerr?
Kreuzer must be under an injury cloud with Phillips named
Cripps out = Jack and/or Kennedy in.
Yes, ahrd to get a handle on their thinking. Don't mind trying 2 tall forwards to see how it goes although I'm thinking they might send Levi down there. Goddard i'd say, is only coming in if Jones is deemed ready for seniors. Not sure why Phillips is there unless they think Kreuzer is sus. Kennedy will be in i'd say.
Good question.
Kerr for H makes sense, and his effort is always solid in 2's.
Maybe the tall defender additions leave the option to swing Levi forward.
As for Lang. I haven't seen the effort in the 2's that warrant a game in the 1's. I'm assuming he's fully recovered from his injury, so his form in 2's reflects his desire rather than injury niggles ????
Oh, and Crippa out ???? we'll get slaughtered around the contest - game over!
Cripps is a sprained foot. 1-2 weeks. Harry groin soreness.
They kept the Crippa injury dead quiet.
in some ways it's good - let's see whether SPS, Dow, Setters, Kennedy etc. can stand up. SPS, Fish both Wa lads.
Philips in does suggest Kreuzer is marginal.
His form suggests it's been something he's been carrying.
I agree flyboy. It is the perfect opportunity for our mids to show their wares. Their greatest challenge for the past 2years.
I hate to be pessimistic but if our hopes are pinned on Lang in the middle, we're buggered. I like the way Setters has been building but he's still only played a handful of games. I'm guessing Ed will tag Fyfe or Mundy, hope he can win some ball like he did v Lions.
Pity the poor bugger matched on Walters, from a competitive perspective as well as a head protection perspective ::) Maybe Plowman gets the job and wears his helmet ????
Imagine this scenario - the centre bounce is contested by the centre and rovers named by each team.
Fyfe, Conca and Mundy vs Dow, Setterfield and Walsh :o
And on the wings - Brad Hill and Ed Langdon vs Marc Murphy and LOB.
We may as well save the airfare and forfeit.
Well, this puts a damper on our premiership hopes.
Well we're about to find out what some folks have been wondering about for some time... without actually wanting to see it. :( :(
The 'elephant in the room' is about to be addressed.
I'll be there!
Go Blues.
This could get very ugly
2 elephants in the room i suspect.
1. Can we play without Cripps.
2. Can Teague coach.
If he can get the boys to be competitive in the absense of BOTH our skippers, on the other side of the country no less, then we need to start looking hard at him.
Which brings me to the obvious question.
Who captains? Ed? Simmo?? Murphy???
I'm excited by this...freo are freo.
So, so.
Who will step up?
Setterfield.....will have to take Mundy.
Maybe Jack will play and be that big inside mid we need and contain Fyfe.
McGovern to kick a bag and win us the game.
Tell Kennedy to stop Fyfe.... your job lad (in between supporting Folau you numpty)
Good question.
You'd go Murphy unless you want a youngster to give it a go.
For me the next one who shows the right stuff and would benefit from a short go at captain would be Jacob weitering.
I'd love to see them make Simmo captain for this game
I like that idea. See if he's got one more Simmo special left in him. See if the youngsters have got any respect for a bloke who deserves plenty.
MMmm ! Love it EB.
If only ??? :D

So the 4 who are to be omitted MUST be from the interchange group listed, correct?
That is, the listed starting 18 are definite, short of a last minute disaster?
I applaud your optimism and hope we play out of our skins and its a great day out for Bluebaggers.
Unfortunately Carlton are Carlton too.
The last time we defeated Freo was early 2016...
Since then we all know our list and coaching changes. Right now our team is led by Crippa, who won't even make the trip
Its won or lost in the middle. Without Crippa, the heat is on the mids. Fisher, Samo, Setterfield, Murphy, Dow, Walsh and whoever else rotates through are going to need to bring their A game for 4 quarters. If we don't get first use of the ball, and use it efficiently, it may be a long day. I'd like to see Gibbons in the middle. I think his pressure, endurance, and nous will be useful.
We need to score early to silence the crowd. Give them a few goals lead, like we've been doing lately and it's game over imo. Then it will be a matter of the entire backline stepping up. Stopping Walters and Matera around goals will be a challenge that I'm hopeful our backs can conquer.
Freo by 5 goals
Go Blues- prove me wrong
I believe we can omit someone from the named starting 18 but there’s a financial penalty. Unless there’s a fitness issue, I suspect that the last four named will miss out.
If I was Teague I'd call in sick for this one...but I think he's probably made of sterner stuff.
Everything points to an relatively easy day at the office for Freo
But funnier things have happened.
Cripps out will change Freo's thinking a bit in terms of matchups.
Some of the younger guys might be keen to take up the slack and we may actually see another level for some with Cripps's absence.
Freo will be fairly confident...maybe over confident.
The start is all important...we cant afford starts like our last two efforts.
It will need a hell of a lot to grow right but it's a great (and interesting test) to see how we operate without Cripps.
In some respects it's also a bit of a measure of Silvagni's recruitment.
Jones to the midfield to heavy Fyfe! :o
May not be such a bad idea. Fyfe wouldn't know if he's coming or going????
Cookie....not sure Jones will have the match fitness after a serious head injury to run with Fyfe all day....Fyfe is a beast. If Cripps had been playing they probably would've just played their own games. Curnow might get the job and maybe Setterfield runs with Mundy.
I was sort of half joking WAS. I just had this flash of Jonesy in full flight crashing into Fyfe>
Nice to fantasize sometimes..... 8)
I'd love to see Ed go to Fyfe from the get go, and niggle him from the time the siren starts.
Fyfe is vulnerable to frutration and if Ed can get a rise out of him he might do something stupid.
Jones should play in the twos, not even the traveling emergency. Better off having full game time here. Might be why they chose Lang, take him across as second emergency. Bench prediction: Kennedy, Silvagni, SPS and Thomas.
Agree. Curnow tagging Fyfe is a certainty now that Cripps isnt playing.
Our midfield is severely undermanned with our main man in, its completely out of its depth with him out. Have to turn to a bunch of skinny kids and Ed :o
Only a massive team effort with all players willing to give 110% to show the football world they are not a one man band will give us a chance to get within a few goals. If not will be a smacking.
Sad 4 years into a rebuild any hopes of win seem to go out the window when one player misses.
No Kennedy surely means thats his AFL dream over.
If Cripps isnt playing, its between Setterfield and Kennedy.
Agree....Fyfe runs all day and is a serious athlete, Ed will need a hand from say Kennedy to keep the pressure up on Fyfe. Never been a real Fyfe fan but watched a couple of Freo games this season and he does work hard and anyone playing on him will need their weetbix. He is averaging more disposals(30) per game than Cripps this season and at 192cm/96kg is Cripps like in size, he is a big unit...you add Mundy at 193/94kg and our blokes are going to very tired trying to bring those two down and its going to need team tagging and plenty of rotations.
In: Jones, Kennedy, J.Silvagni
Out: Cripps (foot), Cuningham (knee soreness), McKay (groin)
Ed is one of the fittest in the comp. There aren't too many around who can match his endurance.
Having said that, always handy to have help.
I said there were four players who on form would be unlucky to miss out, Silvagni, Kennedy, Jones &Goddard, and three made the cut. Getting one in a row right means I won't be making any more predictions.
Of note & no surprise really....the Glass Man David Cunningham out again :o >:( :o >:(
Sorry B M ...what was Jones's form exactly??
Dispute freo losing a few reckon our outs affect us more then theirs will. Have gone from being very confident to thinking how we will possibly not be smashed. No confidence in beating anyone regardless of who they have put when we are fielding a reserve grade midfield.
Will see exactly how much we rely on Cripps this week.
Bolts if he keep his job would have been very nervous this week.
Reckon it will be a long afternoon.
Who's our skipper on Sunday?
Strangely enough I'm really looking forward to this game.
I'm not suggesting it's the case, but if you were guaranteed of your coaching spot for 2020 it's the type of game you might orchestrate just to get a good idea of who stands up in the face of adversity.
It's games like this where you hope some will step up...there may also be a few found wanting too.
These are some of the things we need to sort out in the last half of the season.
Without wishing it I'm sure there are others who have wondered how we'd go without Cripps.
We get to find out on Sunday in a game that no-one will really expects us to win.
Indeed Lods.
It will be an interesting one. At least in terms of data collection to guide 2020 strategy.
Prediction:
We'll go much better than expected. Someone to really announce their afl credentials in cripps absence, a gallant 3.5 quarter effort where we lose by 4 goals at the death.
Cripps emerged after Judd went down with his knee.
Now it's time for one of Kennedy, setterfield or jsos to give us an eye opener.
If we win this weekend I reckon locking in Teague as our next senior coach.
If we fold like a deck of cards (though I doubt we will) it'll be a mess.
Win, lose or draw I expect us to put up one hell of a fight. Nothing less is acceptable and DT must be ruthless in going for that.
Shawney, before Jones was injured he was in all Australian form. My memory goes back more than one week.
Cotterell the traveling emergency. I don’t think we are expecting any last minute changes.
I'm thinking you'll be pretty close.
Which part of Thry’s prediction do you think will be pretty close:
- a gallant 3.5 quarter effort;
- losing by 4 goals;
- one of Kennedy, Setterfield or Jack to give us an eye opener;
- we win; and
- Teague is locked in as our next senior coach?
I reckon Setterfield and Jack have already given us more than an eye opener and Setterfield is going to be a lock in our best 22 for years to come. Jack still has to find/create his role and Kennedy needs another pre-season under his belt before he can demonstrate whether he will be part of our resurgence.
Losing by 4 goals is probably Thry’s best prediction - I hope the margin isn’t greater.
Hate these Sunday Arvo games versus Freo. Wait around all weekend killing time just to hear us getting slaughtered.
SENs WA commentors are even more biased than the SA based ones. Not my idea of a fun, relaxing weekend.
Well at least this way you get to enjoy your weekend right up until sun arvo before it gets ruined with a loss.
If we played friday night, you'd have your whole weekend ruined by a loss.
No longer shall he be known as Mister Ed.
Its now Captain Ed.
https://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/2019-06-30/captain-curnow-to-lead-blues
Best of luck Ed! May the footy gods smile upon you.......... :)
Numbers 1 and 2. 3 a possibility as often there someone relishes responsibility. NBo guarantees there though.
All the best to Ed. Hope you get the best out of the boys.
Mundy, Fyfe v Dow, Walsh.
If nothing else, many lessons will be learned.
Good luck to our youngsters.
Yep, this'll be a learning experience... fully expect us to be 'taught a lesson.' Potential hiding in the offing, to put it another way!
