NORTHERN BLUES v. WILLIAMSTOWN Round 16 - 21/07/2019 01:00 Preston City Oval
Northern Blues B:26. H. Macreadie, 37. B. Silvagni, 19. A. Schumacher HB: 57. E. Penrith, 51. A. Johnson, 52. M. Stavrou C: 55. J. O'Rourke, 75. F. Anderson, 13. L. Stocker HF: 42. K. LeBois, 32. A. Fasolo, 53. J. Palmer F:21. J. Garlett, 12. T. De Koning, 29. C. Polson R:34. A. Phillips, 69. S. Fisher, 47. J. Deluca Int: 77. M. Blakey, 46. M. Cottrell, 27. M. Lobbe, 64. J. Lynch, 38. F. O'Dwyer, 44. M. Owies, 54. J. Velissaris, 72. N. Wheeler 23P: 71. J. Walters
In: A. Johnson, A. Phillips, M. Owies, F. O'Dwyer, L. Stocker, J. O'Rourke
Out: P. Kerr, K. Keppel
The side does look a little stronger this week, but the midfield is still the issue. Anderson did a good job last week and Fasolo did time in the middle, but we don't have real mids to deal with our ruck 'dominance'. Stocker is a good 'in'. Owies was emergency for the seniors last week, yet is on the bench this week in the VFL! For that matter, Cottrell was last week after being Emergency for the seniors. Kiss of Death?
Williamstown B: 10. L. Masters, 21. J. Tippett, 4. B. Myers HB: 17. J. Charleston, 11. J. Dorgan, 18. J. Greiser C: 25. L. Hunt, 9. A. Marcon, 48. T. Mundy HF: 20. M. Norton, 34. J. Ottavi, 22. J. Pickess F: 3. S. Dunell, 16. N. Rodda, 24. W. Wheeler R: 49. N. Meese, 7. M. Hibberd, 1. J. Pongracic Int: 37. N. Ebinger, 23. S. McLarty, 8. N. Mellington, 5. B. Monk, 32. N. Sing, 30. J. Tardio, 15. O. Tate, 26. J. Thorpe 23P: 46. D. Andrews
In: J. Thorpe, B. Monk, S. McLarty, J. Tardio, N. Mellington Out: S. Martyn

Looks like Deluca is replacing Dow, who is ill. So a bare midfield becomes almost empty.

Sad to see Kerr out, really hoped he was going to kick on this year, has he missed his slot?

They were on top for most of it. They kicked 8.22 to 7.7. They finished the 3rd qtr with 6 straight behinds.
We need a midfield out there. Ours was down today: Fisher usually gets about 30 possessions. But he is the only true mid out there. We'll be better if we get some of our players back.

Fasolo has lifted many notches since being shifted into the midfield a few weeks ago.

We have 3 rucks in the VFL, which doesn't do De Koning alot of good. When he rucked on his own last week he is something outstanding. This week when just stuck forward, quiet. It's something we have to look at there. Given we run the NB's these days De Koning's development has to come first.

That's a point but good thing is that has been very good in the midfield. We finding lately our mids we recruited like Kennedy do better forward and those we recruit as forwards like Fasolo are doing well as mids. Good we are finding their right spots at least.

NORTHERN BLUES Goal Kickers: M. Lobbe 2, S. Fisher, A. Fasolo, F. O''Dwyer, M. Owies, J. Palmer Best Players: J. O''Rourke, A. Phillips, F. Anderson, A. Fasolo, A. Johnson, C. Polson
WILLIAMSTOWN Goal Kickers: N. Rodda 3, S. Dunell 2, L. Hunt, J. Thorpe, M. Hibberd Best Players: L. Masters, J. Ottavi, N. Rodda, J. Pongracic, N. Sing, B. Myers
The Blues appear to be quick out of the blocks and then they tire: this has been noticeable all year. As usual, one or more of our rucks dominates, and yet we do not win centre clearances. That suggests that we are not fit enough as a group, no big surprise with so many speculative picks and real youngsters getting a game at the moment. It also suggests that our midfield cannot sustain their effort. Note also that most of last year's VFL pickups are not producing as much as last year. Fisher remains the best of them, but his form has been down all year. Palmer has been down. Hill cannot get into the team. Of this year's recruits, Alex Johnson is improving and provides quite a bit in defence. Jono O'Rourke has struggled with injury, but is improving. Collins cannot get on the park at all. Of the unheralded recruits Anderson remains the best, but he has also struggled with injury. And then, the best mid, Captain Tom Wilson, has missed most of the season with an ACL injury, and probably will miss until early next year. That puts pressure on the AFL listed players, but few of them have developed enough to win games and even fewer are true midfielders. I cannot see us improving significantly at this level until a few more of these lads are ready to step up.

Not that I get to many games these days, but agreed. Tom Wilson was a huge loss....
We need a couple of more quality mids in the 1s, then the junior types eg Dow, LOB can skill up in the 2s.

We need patience, the junior types will be the quality mids for next year, just like SPS and SoJ have improved this year! ;)
