Can't see us rating the team particularly highly this week, but we did win. More importantly, when the chips were down, we really held firm. But to require that grit when we were 50 points up at one point is more than disappointing.

The first half included some of the best football we can produce.
Unfortunately, Port worked out that our style depends almost totally on winning in the centre square. They stopped our run, had a bit of luck and we were in trouble.
However, in the end some of our players really stood up. In previous years we wouldn’t have won this game.

Explanations:
[3] George Hewett: 13 clearances and 33 possessions said the tale. His opponents didn’t have a fraction of that impact.
[2.5] Sam Walsh: Sam had 38 possessions, and worked hard, but still isn’t near his best shape physically. 6 tackles and 4 clearances. Just wait until he is really fit and confident in his body.
[2] Charlie Curnow: Charlie dropped far too many marking opportunities today, but he was there when it counted. 5 goals was an excellent return.
[1.5] Adam Cerra: Not quite, but almost. Cerra continues to show a fair bit; 32 possessions, 4 tackles and 4 clearances. However, it was one of those games that was good without being the difference. Will get better.
[1] Harry McKay: H kicked some goals, but he really wasted some chances today. He had 2 shots that didn’t get close, and he mucked up a couple of others. However, he was a marking target and he stood up when he was needed. Ruck work in the forward line was improved.
[1] Zac Williams: More metres gained than anyone else by same margin, Zac did a good job, just not a great one. He needs to work on his disposal for 2023.
[1] Matthew Cottrell: Matthew was a 4-quarter player, one of few. He kept going and getting the ball when our small forwards stopped. Deserves to keep his spot comfortably.
[0.5] Marc Pittonet: Marc was excellent early, and his dominance was the reason we played so well early. Ran out of puff a bit, but his hard work was appreciated.
[0.5] Zac Fisher: Fisher was the small forward who stepped up today. This was his best game for the year by some margin, and his goal was superb! Still fumbles too often, something he really needs to work on.
[0.5] Adam Saad: Solid in defence but tended to run himself into a trouble at times. Saady was very good when the game was on the line, not so good in the third quarter.
[0.5] Jack Martin: This looked like the day Jack Martin proved he was a top notcher, but he stopped at half time. Brilliant early, but nothing much afterwards.
[0.5] Sam Docherty: Another really solid effort from Doc today. He isn’t wasting his kicks this year and he is providing real run and good leadership.
[0.5] Jacob Weitering: Jacob doesn’t look 100%: his running seems very laboured at the moment. He isn’t taking many of the big marks he was doing last year yet. However, he kept his opponents in starvation corner and made some great plays in the last quarter.
Honourable Mentions:
Matthew Kennedy: Probably the only player who was stiff not to get a vote. He was good in patches, and took a couple of brilliant intercept marks, but really fell away in the 3rd quarter. Still, he didn’t drop his head and lifted in the last quarter.
Jack Silvagni: Jack didn’t have a huge day, but he worked hard.
Jack Newnes: Newnes was very good in the first half, even though he did make a few skill errors. Unfortunately, he was very quiet after half time.
Lewis Young: Young was pretty quiet for a lot of the game, but when it really mattered, he really lifted. His last couple of spoils were excellent. Young doesn’t appear to have the confidence in himself to take the marks in defence he could, but he is learning. His opponents mainly got their kicks a long way up the field.
Luke Parks: Like Young, Parks doesn’t yet have the confidence to take the big mark in defence, which limits the number of possessions he can get. His spoils, his tackling and chasing were good, but he would be infinitely better if he trusted himself to take some marks. Parks has been criticized for his disposal in the past, but his kicking was pretty good today.
