Very early days, but lets see who is in your best 22.
Pick 22 from the above.
We'll see if everyone is on the same page.
As Zac Williams has done his ACL, he is out for the season, and out of the votes so don't include him in your votes.
Have at it.
20 players have 7 or more votes from 10 people so far.
12 players have a perfect 10 from 10.
12 players are without a single vote (including ineligible Zac Williams).
Have you voted yet?
This survey never fails to show that members believe one thing and post another. ;D
A few surprises (not really big ones, but interesting)....
Everyone has McGovern.
If we'd done this this time last year I doubt that would have been the case
Motlop has more votes than both Owies and Durdin...so there are probably some high expectations on him this year.
Only a couple of folks have left DeKoning out so the majority think we can play both Pittonet and TDK. I agree that's probably how it will play out but we'd have to look at team balance and who gets pushed out.
Not much love for Dow. If he hasn't cemented a spot by the end of the year the fair thing would be to let him go and try his luck somewhere else.
Otherwise it's all pretty predictable....fringe players with a middling number of votes. New players pretty much starting with clean slate and are yet to be judged.
Now what will no doubt happen is that if we did this again mid -year and end of the season some of those fringe/new players will have pushed into the side. It will be interesting to see who drops out.
I picked a team and thatvwas my 22.
McGovern was one of the last to get a gig and it was on the bench.
Motlop missed out to durdin and Owies in my side.
Tdk did miss out on my side.
I thought with talls of....
Backline
Young, weitering and marchbank
Forwards
Curnow, mckay and Jack
And McGovern on the bench filling in a tall where required.
I couldn't see a spot for tdk to backup pittonet it would make us too tall.
Who couldn't find a spot for Saad?
Someone made an error clearly, Saad would be one of everyones first picked every week.
I can't actually tell you who I picked, I counted to 22 as I selected them. Mcgovern, owies, durdin, motlop and tdk were all in my team I think.
Yeah, thats weird.
It used to show up as bold for who you voted for when i've done this previously. I didn't change anything from what i did, so i'm tipping is part of some update.
Official Matthew Cottrell, Matthew Owies and Nic Newman fan club here.
I was struggling by the time I reached pick 15. Let's face it, we are selecting on last year's performances.
It's voting on a wing and a prayer with the new recruits. We don't know whether Marchbank or Cuningham will play again, and if they do, for how long. The same applies with Martin.
This vote would give a more meaningful result if taken after at least four or five rounds have been played.
We can always do it again then 🙂
Yep
It's the poll that keeps on giving...
(....a chance to change your mind.)
I'm sure my best 22 will be different after Rnd 11-12 and again after the last round.
(...and again after the Grand Final :D )
OK, so based on 31 voters thus far, here is our 'best 22'.
FB - Docherty (31) - Weitering (31) - Marchbank (18)
HB - Martin (27) - Young (30) - Saad (30)
C - Walsh (31) - Cripps (31) - Acres (30)
HF - Kennedy (30) - C.Curnow (31) - Fisher (28)
FF - Silvagni (30) - McKay (31) - Motlop (25)
R - Pittonet (31) - Cerra (31) - Hewitt (31)
INT - McGovern (30) - DeKoning (28) - O'Brien (19) - C. Durdin (19)
EMG - Newman (17) - Owies (10) - Cottrell (10)
Next in line.....
Cuningham (5) - Kemp (3) - Plowman (3)
E. Curnow (2) - Boyd (2) - Dow (1)
Hollands (1) - Carroll (1) - Honey (1)
I know that 22 is based on the votes but if we were picking a team for Round 1, with everyone fit, I'm not sure Martin plays on a HBF. I'd have him in my best 22 but probably O'Brien out for Newman to play back. But looks like the concensus for best 22 was pretty much across the board?
You'd like that side to line up every week....but yep, it does point out a pretty glaring weakness
We lack a small/medium defending defender....although he may be found in that "next in line" group
Just read that Cincotta has been picked up in the SPP today.
I had Cottrell and Kemp in my 22 at the expense of Marchbank and O'Brien.
Picking a team on the popular vote has some drawbacks but Kruddler's team is at least one defender shy, two if Doc plays in the midfield. Given the changes to the sub rule, I'd bring Newman into the 22 and make C Durdin the sub.
FB - Docherty (31) - Weitering (31) - Marchbank (18)
HB - McGovern (30) - Young (30) - Saad (30)
C - O'Brien (19) - Cripps (31) - Acres (30)
HF - Martin (27) - C.Curnow (31) - Walsh (31)
FF - Silvagni (30) - McKay (31) - Motlop (25)
R - Pittonet (31) - Cerra (31) - Hewitt (31)
INT - Kennedy (30) - DeKoning (28) - Fisher (28) - Newman (17) - Sub C. Durdin (19)
EMG - Owies (10) - Cottrell (10) - Cuningham (5)
I think the rule changes will see rucks or KPP Utility types being used as the Sub, with clubs far more likely to go with a single ruck and perhaps an extra tall mid.
For me the Handbaggers are now at a huge advantage, a fit Blicsav is like having two players, no wonder they are so happy.
All Subs are not created equal.
Last year at this time, when picking our best 22, I daresay the high percentage of us would not have had Lewis Young in the team, he would have been a 'wait and see' support act. As we all know, he ended up being one of the first magnets on the board!!
So pick you best 22 in positions, then predict your '2023 Lewis Young.'
I'm pegging if he endures the physical step-up to AFL then Hollands will be in, he might even get a gig Rnd.1 subject to the eventual return of Walsh and never go out!
I think Acres is in danger of being a anti-young'. Supporters expect the world of him and might be disappointed.
I was one who thought Ed Curnow should've been delisted as i think he is surplus to our needs, but if we get the odd injury he could cement his spot into the lineup. Come to think of it, he could be in the side playing off half back in a lockdown role. He has the tank and the defensive mindset....
Other than that, Owies i think people are underrating. He was the first picked of my small forwards due to his hard running and consistency. Doesn't always go rewarded, and mostly unnoticed, but would be tough to keep him out.
I also think Cuningham will surprise a few. Barely played in...forever...but his 2nd last game he was BOG and dominated. Hopefully he can stay fit.
For a real smokey....Cincotta. 26yo, should be right to go and may surprise.
Kruddler, said the same thing re Cincotta on another thread...reckon he might be a bolter for Round 1. Tigers' midfield will be a lot stronger with Taranto and Hopper...and without Walsh, we may well need Doc in there at times. Having Hewett back will be a huge boost.
I was thinking the same the other day. He often had the role negating quality midfielders and won plenty of ball himself. He has the aerobic ability to stick to the task for long periods....the question will be how he comes back after such a long layoff at this late stage of his career.
The thing about Ed is that he won't leave you wondering.
He'll give any task 110% of his ability at the time (which may have caught up with him).
Could certainly be useful off the bench, especially with Walsh missing early on and Williams gone for the season.
Agree that Ed is essentially a great problem to have, whatever task you give him you know he’ll give 100%.
And calves permitting he has a seasoned body and running ability that can fill in pretty much anywhere on the park.
If everyone’s fit and firing he probably won’t get a game, but a great guy to have in the wings and the VFL team.
And as a mid, he is more than handy in front of goal.
Martin isn't in my 22 - just don't trust him.
Me neither, same for Marchbank and Williams....they just dont play enough games through the season or impact enough.
I voted for Martin purely out of hope, same for Williams.
I took it as best 22, all players are fit except Williams.
Doc was on the ch7 news, reckons he has trained all summer with the mids and expects to play midfield this year. He said there might be games where he has to play some time in defence but he will be predominantly a mid. Has been working with Crippa to learn structures and clearance work.
Rnd 1 I'd go with
Docherty Weitering Saad
McGovern Young Cincotta
O'Brien Cripps Acres
Silvagni Curnow Fisher
Motlop McKay Durdin*
De Koning Cerra Hewitt
Int Dow** Kennedy Newman Hollands
Sub Pittonet
*If Durdin doesn't get up, Owies or Honey
** Play him every week until Walsh is available at least
Fair enough SB.....Martins best is very good but you rarely see it and I guess Im just out of patience waiting for him to find form, stay fit and give us a 20 game season.
Williams arrived banged up with achilles issues and to be honest I never saw anything in him at GWS that warranted that massive contract and while I feel sorry for the bloke with his injuries I cant include him in any team of mine until I see him fit and firing for one full season at least.
