Title: The Rising Star Drought
Post by: townsendcalling on December 01, 2013, 04:52:23 pm
We haven't feature prominently in recent year in the NAB Rising Star nominations, which I think is a reflection of a number of things, but what are our chances in 2014?

Menzel:  yes
Graham: yes
Buckley: doubtful
Cripps: possible
Giles: doubtful
Holman: doubtful

I'll be surprised if Menzel & Graham don't both get nominations in 2014.

Since it's inception only the Dogs, GWS, the Pies and Carlton have missed out on winning this award.
*Buckley won it at the Bears.

We currently sit 11th on the list of nominees. Surprisingly the Weagles have the most followed by Melbourne and Essendon :o

Obviously that stat will change quite significantly over the next couple of years with the Gold Coast and GWS having more first round draft picks than the first round of the AFL draft.

The big question.  How many rising stars have won a premiership?

Im not sure i care about this to be honest.  Individual awards are a nice to have but are meaningless in the scheme of things.

You can play a very good season as a young player and still miss out on a nomination.

Which ones are they for us?

Chris Scott (2)
Ben Cousins
Michael Wilson
Byron Pickett (2)
Adam Goodes (2)
Sam Mitchell (2)
Joel Selwood (3)
Dan Hannebery

Eight out of about 20, and most of those players have played in more than one premiership side.
