Playing the Roos again. They are a better team now than they were last time.
Bring back Fantasia.
Selection will be interesting this week. I hope the MC do their homework better this week.
No Hewitt; no midfield. Bring back George.
Vossy was obviously resting his most important underrated player to have him primed for finals.
Bad jokes aside, I thought our small forwards played their worst games for some time. I wonder if the sacrificial game Voss asks Fantasia to play makes these guys' jobs a little easier ?
I guess we’ll find out that answer in about an hours time
Did ok in the VFL did Hewett and should be an automatic in....
I thought Hewett won a lot of footy, but like Walsh yesterday did nothing damaging with it, and "coughed it up" a few too many times.
It's a problem for the MC.
But the Dogs practising that hip drop type tackle clouds the issue, it's an awful trend, dogs in name and dogs in nature.
In the olden days of rugby, the counter practise was to run off by deliberately lifting your heels high, if they get the tackle wrong you either cop them in the nuts or under the chin.
Young has been good in the VFL and might be time to try him again. Plus, he gives ruck back up playing one ruck. Motlop, Hewett, Young, Cunningham, Binns in. Out Marchbank, Pitto, Cottrell and Ollie, plus Williams, who is injured.
Hopefully Gov is right to go and comes straight back in for Marchbank.
Williams out injured and Ollie and Cotters definitely need a run in the two's to get some ball. I'd have Hewett and Kennedy both in the 22 this week and Motlop in for Williams.
Need to bring some passion.
Another game we expect to win.
That hasn't worked too well the last few weeks. ::)
If we lose this one we will be a laughing stock.
And they'll see themselves as a chance.
They'll go hard at the body early... just your typical Clarko team.
We will smash them.
can voss try something different cincotta in the centre
We are not the same team that would lose a game like this one.
Something I also ponder. The guy is hard in and under, strong run with but also has really good speed over the grass. Good goal sense too.
I think Cincotta plays best when the pill is in front of him, or when some opponent stupidly takes him to the footy.
It is a different game style to elite Mids, guys like Walsh and Cerra are moving before others have worked out where the footy is going.
Having said that, as a stopper, our new Ed, I think Cincotta is a serious option. The more he gets the chance the better he'll get, remembering he is still only a beginner at AFL level.
Cincotta probably gets LDU or Sheezel this week....especially if Sheezel plays in the back half.
I think that’s right LP, and part of the reason why Cincotta starts outside the square and picks up his opponent after the bounce.
That said, I’d like to see him given the opportunity to start in the square when circumstances permit.
Vossy is up against a bloke this week who is as cunning as a s-house rat. This type of game is right in Clarko's and Viney's wheelhouse. Beware.
Cinc has become something of a conundrum for the coaches. Virtually out of nowhere this excellent lock-down defender emerged, who then moved into becoming an excellent run-with mid. And if you line him up with the rest of our mids, he's probably one of, if not the, quickest over the turf. So how and where do we play him to take advantage of his emerging and growing skills?
In : Motlop, Hewett, Cuningham, Jack Carroll, Sam Durdin
Out : Kemp, Williams
From the post match post:
Really !?!
Let's get the 2021 crew back together lol.
Kemp has stalled in his development. Try him forward.
Played on Jesse Hogan 2 weeks ago.
He did...Hogan kicked 5 and had 15 touches.
He would kick 10 on Newman.
...and Hogan got 10 coach's votes.
He has?
His intercept game has improved. Made some blunders against the Dogs - needs to improve his disposal efficiency in the back half and contested posession wins. Marchy has him covered here but very harsh on Kempy... but needs to clean up that disposal in the back half 66% efficiency and having the ball 15-20 times per game is hurting us. Developing nicely imo.
Marchbank will be injured before the season ends, we shouldn't be wasting our time. Back the players who got us to where we are not feel good stories from the past.
Same mistake we made for the prelim. Dropped kemp in favour of Marchbank.
I like Marchbank, but he is not the future. Kemp has more upside and can play on a wider variety of players compared to Marchbank.
From the extended bench, i'd go this way with it.
[37] Jordan Boyd,
[29] George Hewett,
[44] Matthew Owies,
[28] David Cuningham,
Sub...
[46] Matthew Cottrell,
Emergencies
[16] Jack Carroll,
[38] Sam Durdin,
[27] Marc Pittonet
Durdin will play. He'll be matched up against Teakle.
Pitto may well play as well, as North have 2 rucks.
I wouldn't be playing Cottrell: he needs to find some form and confidence in the VFL.
Don't see the word 'stalled' as a huge criticism.
It's not meant that way.
It simply means that he is not playing much better, if at all better, than he was last year.
Now for a 23 year old you would expect a level of improvement.
There hasn't been that breakthrough...yet.
And one way to make it happen is to give him some opportunities elsewhere in the side.
Don't drop him, try another spot.
I actually rate Kemp.
I see in him the potential to play a number of positions.
Have a look at his draft profile and one of the features of it was his versatility...
https://central.rookieme.com/afl/player/brodie-kemp/
Yet we seem to have determined he is a defender (maybe through necessity) and that's where he stays...
but the fact is he's now out of the side.
It will be interesting to see where and how he is used in the VFL.
I’ve had a feeling with Kemp that he’s not killing the ball when he’s 3rd man up, I suspect that’s why they’ve gone with Marchbank
Possibly correct, but after I watched the replay I thought he might come under a bit of scrutiny for ball use decisions, in that he failed to pull the trigger a couple of times and dropped his head.
Sometimes it's just one or two events that can trigger an MC, and last game Kemp had a couple of moments which I thought just looked awful.
Need a steady settled defense to win a premiership, dropping Kemp isnt a sign of that imho, we have moved on from Young, now we have moved on from Kemp. Marchbank isnt a true KP defender imo and I cant see him holding down CHB in the finals and thats if he can even stay on the park till finals.
Kemp gets the two tough gigs vs GWS and the Dogs but gets dropped vs Nth who have been playing the less challenging defender Toby Pink at CHF, not sure how that is developing Kemp?
I doubt Kemps been written off, though sometimes I wonder who Weiters feels more comfortable with, who he thinks he can rely on to do what needs to be done.
I suspect that it's more because of Kemp completely losing his opponents on several occasions in our last two games. In one case he gave Hogan a couple of metres, then took a detour around the goal post that allowed Hogan an uncontested mark about 15 metres out. Kemp needs to work on his positioning in the VFL to win his spot back.
Like Crash, I have a feeling that Nige will come in to the 22 and we'll have a very a different defensive set up.
I think the back 6 is at its most solid when it includes Weiters, Gov and Kemp as the three main pillars. When ones goes out, it seems to fall apart. Just my opinion.
I think we are getting the squad ready for the real stuff and I think we are currently boosting players stocks for next season.
I understand bringing Durdin in as we have the 4th worst defense in the comp. Only the bottom 3 teams have conceded more goals than us.
We also need a look at Nige, has he debuted yet ?
In the past when needed he was suspended or injured, we need to see if he can work in the back six
I actually think Weitering probably has a big influence in that selection process...and I suspect it's not Young.
How many games has Young played in defence (and not in the ruck) with Weitering also in the side.
Same here. So... we can be assured it won't end up that way! ::)
Nige has played one game for us - I think he got injured 🙄 - and 22 for North.
As Fog said, we’ve given up more goals in the last two games than we have in quite a while. McGovern struggling with injury, then missing hasn’t helped but it’s not entirely the back seven’s fault. Our team defence needs to improve!
Who would S. Durdin play on?....Not Larkey I hope.
Any chance Weitering is a late out with soreness and S Durdin plays? Hopefully not as Larkey will tear him a new one.
Kemp was really good earlier on but last few weeks been a bit off IMO. He might eventually take MOTY but he goes for those too often and some of his disposal has been pretty ordinary too. Not sure who gets Zurhaar this week as I would've thought he was the best option given McGovern is still out.
I suppose our first priority will be to cut off supply, then the 2nd priority will be diminish the impact if we aren't able to limit supply.
Our best footy comes from centre square dominance, of course given we have Harry and Charlie that must be self-evident. We are nowhere near as good with using the footy when we have to exit D50, and we are even more diminished while McGovern is out as he's probably our best user, so for me centre square dominance should remain our priority over other avenue to goal.
Losing Williams is a problem, he is another of our better ball users, we probably need Cottrell and Acres to step up and become damaging forward of centre while continuing to deep run defensively and for the rest of the team to look for open options entering F50. A myopic focus on Charlie and Harry makes it too easy for the opposition to setup and run the footy out of our F50.
Teakle is 203cm tall, if Durdin does not play it will be Marchy on 2 metre Teak.
Fox Footy suggesting Durdin has to pass a fitness test, they asked Voss if Durdin playing would free up Weitering from a matchup on Larkey and he replied "Possibly".
Teakle was named CHF but mature aged recruit and KP defender Toby Pink has been playing that role in recent weeks, the dual ruckman Nth have may mean Pittonet will play.
I dont mind Durdin playing on Teakle if that matchup happened but I wouldnt want him anywhere near Larkey like I said before...
Voss tried to free up Weitering against the Giants which was a fail that he couldn't rectify during the game once Weiters got that bad corky.
I think Weitering has to play on the oppositions best KP Forward every week....Kemp on Hogan was mystifying unless Weitering was already carrying an injury and not really fit to begin with.
Never thought I would say this but McGovern being out seems to have unsettled the backline and made Kemp look more vulnerable.
After we beat Geelong we started experimenting. Time to get back on track.
Boyd also out injured. Pitto dropped.
Int:Alex Cincotta, George Hewett, Matthew Cottrell, Matthew Owies, David Cuningham
Our defence looks ridiculously small with both Kemp and McGovern out. Not bringing in Durdin to play on Teakle is a shocking move. Kennedy is a good player, but he isn't a full time defender: he's a strong mid who can go forward sometimes.
Mattie Cottrell; How? Why? He needs to get a few games under his belt and a bit of confidence. He isn't in any role he might have on Sunday.
North also play 2 big rucks. I don't understand Pitto making way in this case. if North had only a single ruck, someone Tom could run into the ground, I would understand. This, I don't.
Our match committee and I often disagree, but it looks to me like we want to lose, as we've weakened our structure.
Newman is a good player for us but he needs to make sure he does not give away critical frees again this week as he did in the past couple of games.
Sorry to single him out but he has annoyed me with those in the past two games.
I think the MC have tried to do the right thing by going back to the same type of formula we were using on a run last year.
Problem is this week we've dropped Kemp (with McGovern already missing) and are playing an injured Weitering.
I'd be much happier if we still had Kemp in the side, or even as a sub.
Otherwise, very happy to see Hewett and Motlop in and cunners back.
I'd personally have Cottrell as the sub from that lot. But would've chose kemp.
Dont be sorry cookie i am exactly the same. Hes a good footballer who plays on the edge but there are times when he needs to tame things a little. Played selfish last week.
If Weitering cops another corkie Larkey could kick a match winning bag
we have no one up our sleeve who could contain him.
But then again don’t think they have much to stop McKay or Curnow
Isn't it sad that because of the mental and physical fragility shown by our players in recent weeks we are entertaining the possibility of being beaten by a bottom feeder side instead of the discussion being upbeat and revolving around how many goals we will win by.
I think this and other decisions are made with finals in mind, we cannot afford to get a week or two out with too many players out of form.
The MC and coaches need time to sort things out.
Time is probably running out for managing players and experimenting with structure.
We need to shore up a top four spot (preferably 2nd).
We don't want to be travelling to either Sydney, Brisbane or Perth.
I replied to
@crashlander in fairness to the MC, if not now when, we are playing a bottom side this week, if they needed to get a look at the problems now is probably the best time to put them on display, the Wet Toast in Perth might be another but that is late in the season at Rnd 22.
Fans assume omissions are about bad form, players getting "Dropped", but at this time of the season it's just as likely a week off for some that aren't a problem, with the MC signalling to those on the fringe now is the time to prove your worth.
The hypothetical,
"If you can't do it this week against a bottom side, how can we trust you to perform against finalists?"
All sides do this, when you get an unexpected loss the AFL media will label the club fatheads full of hubris, but they cop that no matter when or how it happens.
I do understand your thinking, but playing with your form can be lethal. It has happened to us too often in the past. It has also happened to other teams this year. If you underestimate an opponent, you may live to regret it. It is why I always want us to go for the throat. Winning form is good form.
Sorry
@crashlander , got me before the edit was done.
When your list is deep and strong and performing sure I get it, but we've had patchy form over the last few weeks from several of our prime movers so our list isn't, so the accusation of playing with your form is wide of the mark. If anything we've recently returned to our old patchy qtr by qtr efforts, which isn't great.
This season, excluding a short segment of games, we've frequently limped across the line, which is a nice counterpoint to the last few seasons of falling agonisingly short. But it's still far from being on a roll!
We have some glaring holes that a single injury or opposition tactic might turn into a gaping chasm. Hope isn't going to get us across the line.
How much of our selections this week have the 5 day break in mind??
Vossy wants to fix our defence and reward VFL form:
https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/teams/carlton-blues/afl-2024-michael-voss-says-carlton-needs-to-fix-defence-quickly/news-story/f79ac14865dbe31d27d508f6de53d4f1
Pretty simple really …
Doesn't explain why he dropped Hewett.
I get the impression that they couldn't accommodate both Hewett and Cerra, and decided to include the latter and omit the former. He states that Hewett has been " in great form throughout periods of this year" and went back and played well in the VFL, which to my reading sounds like a consistency issue, but it's not clear exactly what Voss means.
@PaulP I doubt Voss will let too many cats out of the bag at this time of year, he is a calm and cool operator now.
Although as fans we are easily triggered, we must always default to "In Voss we trust!"
I think that's right Paul; we omitted Georgie to fit Cez in. However, they're not like for like and we have missed Hewett's defensive work and physicality at the contest. He has played well in the VFL but I suspect there's just a little "we got that wrong" subtext.
No doubt. His words occupy an ambiguous space, located somewhere between a "kernel of truth" and "take every word as fact." My best guess is that Hewett's omission is part form, and part selection squeeze.
I went back and watched some replays, both in relation to Kemp and Hewett, for me (subjectively) they had a common trend. It's about not taking on the hard target, opting to play it safe as the default, which causes a loss of time and space forward of the footy. That one disposal too many is costly, they need to pull the trigger.
They have both been playing it safe and avoiding mistakes, but it's costly in other areas of the ground. I'd bet Voss wants them to take the game on more than they have, and we need that in the absence of McGovern and Williams.
I think Kemp in particular could push harder to get up the ground, especially if Weiters is at home, and be aggressive with ball use. Given our Midfield is a tad slower than most, the small delays from too many safe disposals sideways / backwards are highly costly on turnover and the delay makes turnover more likely.
No doubt it's possible, but if so, the club seems a little slow on the uptake. He played a few minutes as the sub against Richmond, then omitted from the GWS and Bulldogs games. Seems a rather long time to notice a selection error IMO.
Marchbank Sick
Durdin in
Okay it only took 2 days.
Sick n tired 😷🤒🤕🤢🤮🤧🥵🥶🥴😵💫🤔
Durdin ahead of Kemp, must be something else going on
Need to see if Durdin is up to it, in case he's needed in 8 week's time.
If Marchbank was fit and in form I'd have him in my best 22.
But 57 games in six seasons
Only 15 in the last three.
It's around 1 game in 7 games out this season.
We just cant keep persevering.
It's a list spot we can't rely on.
This is a bit different because it's an illness, but wasn't it an illness last time.
He's obviously highly regarded, otherwise we wouldn't have kept supporting him through these multiple breaks.
But there has to come a time.
Durdin was named as an emergency, Kemp wasn't.
Durdin, at 199cm, will be a better match up on 203cm Teakle than 192cm Kemp (and 193cm Marchbank).
If height is the only requirement to be a good defender, then you would've picked Young.
But, height is not the be all and end all.
Personally, i'd have preferred Kemp, still, despite being undersized because without him up and about, we don't actually have an alternate CHB option. Which is a HUGE worry......and one i've flagged for years. We need to recruit a genuine KPD to pair with Weitering.
Hopefully Durdin has some kind of Jarrad Waite, Lance Whitnall, Liam Jones reversal of fortunes and turns into a genuine KPD out of nowhere. However, i'm not optimistic.
Bit of a worry, despite the roof being closed Marvel can still be a bit greasy in cold conditions, in fact if it's rained before they closed the roof some players claim it's more slippery than the MCG.
That was the basis of some calls earlier this season to always close the roof before the weekend.
I think Marchbank may be suffering from depression. Whenever he has played in the past and started to be the player people think he can be he has become injured and some of these injuries have been strange like Boyd landing on him this year. To me he has lost confidence and these illnesses may be symptomatic of his mental state.
Nervous about today's game but not sure why?
If we're a top 4 team we should smash them.
Because despite that things have changed, they remain the same (we are Carlton). The football world is waiting for our capitulation, we are still inconsistent especially against lowly teams. Thats why a loss would not surprise me one bit.
When I see a lot of iffy inclusions in the lineup I get concerned, this wouldnt be one of our best teams we have picked for the year and its only balanced out by the fact we are playing Nth who shouldnt be any threat if we took emotion out of the game and relied on logic and stats but thats not how it works in football and strange things happen...
Im just a dip crap and know nothing but if it were me and I was going to play 1 ruck, I have another as the Sub.
Just playing for frees that aren't there.
Awesome effort against a team that's won 2 games.
I've given up on deKonig - can be awesome but too often injured, especially early in games. Can be trusted.
We can't we a flag with so many passengers on the list.
Cottrell needs to keep it basic, he isn't skilful enough for cute stuff. That goal is a result of his TO.
Has Acres had a kick?
No but he needs one in the arse from Voss
Motlop showing OF how to crumb
He should have been managed after the Giants game. We have a very handy back up.
Clarkson thinks we're soft and we're playing to that stereotype....I DONt ACCEPT LOSING FROM A LACK OF EFFORT AND INTENSITY.
Then why play him MBB...what F Wit MC came up with that notion?
We have woke up.
