Title: VFL 2025 Rd 4: Carlton vs North Melbourne at Arden St
Post by: crashlander on April 13, 2025, 07:23:19 pm
The game is on at 12:05 at Arden St.
Interesting to see who is available, as we were ordinary against North last year (in the VFL).

Where our seniors are short of ruck talent, the 2's have an oversupply. :( I understand that Pitto might need some playing time, but this is a real structural weakness in our side.
On the other hand, North also have plenty of ruck talent out there.

Grainger-Barras named for the 1st time. Interesting to see him in action.
Still no Hayes.

I'm wondering if any of our emergencies will play; I'm fairly certain 2 won't, to cover for the seniors.
That might mean that big Flynn Riley will play. Maybe even Hayes. I can hope.

As for DGB, apparently he missed the last game because of the death of his father. This comes from BF, so it may be totally wrong, but it makes some sense, given that he's spent time in Perth in recent weeks.

Duffy: apparently he is doing a 'strong training block' at the moment and will be seen soon. That makes some sense also, as we want him to make an impact when he plays. Alas, Monahan has struggled to do that as yet.

McMahon with three goals already and his kicking for goal is faultless, cannot understand the reluctance to give him a go at senior level. Pittonet needs the run, looks slow and cumbersome, ...Hayes dominating and looks a class above most with his ball use and poise.
Lemmey with a couple of goals, doesnt do a lot but what he does is neat and effective, Campo kids have done a few nice things and look promising.

Baggers by 17pts at half time. 9.5 to 6.6

Of the AFL listed boys no-one is yelling me, me, me. Billy Wilson, Campos and Pitto doing okay. Lemmey's got 2 so that's okay.

But it's the VFL listed blokes who are doing the grunt work - Hayes, Ramshaw, Stevens and Hogg chief among them. McMahon has 3. I'd actually have McMahon a whisker ahead of Lemmey in the big forwards stakes... don't tell K I said that.

When the opposition step up, we evaporate. What is that?

Hopefully we wrestle momentum back and get a run on. Teakle is unmatched in fwd line. Man mountain against ours

Nth stepped up the pressure, made it more physical and we fell apart and are now trailing at 3/4 time. McMahon been moved down back to help steady the ship but its very hard when your best mid is a horse trainer who only plays one game in four.
Boyd has been terrible, playing on Eddie Ford who is carving him up and our senior listed players have contributed poorly imo.
Dont get the hype on Wilson, Binns kicking isnt great under pressure, Evans had been ineffective and quiet, Campos have done good stuff but have faded out of the game. Ben is good in close with his hands but his kicking and lack of pace need work, Lucas has been more effective imo but again his disposal needs work and Id like to see both him and his brother do some sprint training and get some more breakaway speed into their games.
Pittonet has worked his way into the game as it has slowed up but needs another game in the VFL.

We're embarrassing ourselves atm
No f50 structure
No defensive exit plan
Looks like they have more players fwd and back.

Nth hang on and it was a disappointing loss lets hope the seniors can do better. Not a lot to get excited about, Lemmey and McMahon made the most of their opportunities vs decent opponents in Pink, Dawson and Tomlinson who have all played senior footy but the delivery in the second half was non existent.
Pittonet battled on and Hayes kept getting the footy but not much else to report and we really lack midfield talent to propel the ball forward and I think most of our problems are list management related.

Disappointed to lose, but North have a lot more senior talent out there than we do.

Carlton 12 - 10 - 82
North  12 - 12 - 84

Denver-Barass - 3 disposals: was he injured? Certainly he had the ball less than anyone else on the ground.
McMahon; 4 goals 1 point. Much better than he was last week in the state game. 12 possessions and 4 marks.
Lemmey: 3 goals 1 from 9 disposals and 5 marks.

Will Hayes: 37 possessions - that's 10 more than anyone else on the park. A much better often than Frank the Tank.

The Camporeale boys had 25 (Ben) and 23 (Lucas) respectively. Not bad for kids that young. They will get better, but both show that they need to improve. I read in an earlier post that a little extra sprint work might be useful. I concur totally. They are getting used to a much quicker game and some work on their burst would help both hugely. It would give them that extra second to make better decisions and (hopefully) hit targets.

The VFL boys really showed something statistically. I'm happy to see that, but I'd like some of our listed players showing more.

Moir: 10 disposals and 2 goals: I'd like to see more endeavour from this lad.
Rob Monahan: 9 disposals - this is one of his highest, which is a serious worry. I don't see him making the grade at this point.

Ramshaw is a player.  I havent seen this, but if we are looking at another player in mid season draft we could do worse than him.

I haven't seen the whole game and probably won't; I'm not so masochistic, although I might watch the last quarter.

The only thing we lost was the game. There were some really good signs, especially early. The way we moved the ball was lovely to see. Granted, many of our 2's are not great disposers yet, but there was system, there was desire and the tackling and chasing was good.

A couple of things stood out:
[1] Until we start hitting targets, we aren't going to win a lot.
[2] We do have some nice kids coming through. I liked O'Farrell. His marking, his intercepting and his placement show that he might have a future. The 2 Camporeale boys are kids playing against men, but they are showing they have a future. Each has some improving to do, but the signs are promising.
[3] The fitness level isn't there yet.
[4] We do now have a clear game plan, something that wasn't easy to see last year. We need a few more variations, but there is a winning way developing.
[5] Our VFL lads are showing more than some of our listed players. Ramshaw, Stevens, Hogg and Hayes really look decent. McMahon is showing more than Lemmey, but Lemmey is progressing. Just not fast enough. He played on Tomlinson today, who was one of North's best, but Lemmey kicked 3 and could have kicked more if we didn't make so many errors.
[6] Pitto is very rusty, but he was important. He will get better.
