Motlop is showing why fans get frustrated with him this quarter. 4 years in and shows minimal guile and smarts at times.
That being said that switkowski tackle was more of a 50 metre penalty that saw omac score so ill give him a pass for that.

How is it our players are holding their opponents in offense, and holding their opponents in defence, and we hardly get holds paid anywhere?

While I don't know how this game will pan out, and I might be wrong, but I suspect this 1st half shows yet another game that has our team functioning better when we have one of our Mids out.
A lot of fans want more Mids, more rotations, yet today our team balance looks better!
I suspect one of the reasons why it's better is that nobody is sitting back waiting for one someone to clear the footy, there are less options so there is less hesitation. They aren't looking at each other wondering who's turn it is to crack in, they just have to go every time and as a result we look better.

Our side near always functions better with half a side or more missing. Just the coach never worked that out.

Carlton Rooms, players eating like there is no tomorrow and their last ever meal. Freo rooms, a few fluids and that's its. Any wonder our third qtrs are crap, they have what's called fiacca in Italian (pronounced fi-ukka and translates to sluggish or no energy). We call it food coma.

"George Hewett had an incredible first half, having seven clearances, 12 contested possessions, 12 uncontested possessions and 25 disposals, his most ever in a first half."
Hewetts stats are very good for someone who plays a full game. He's done it in a half.

This is the style of football similar to what we played in that run in 2023. Pressure at the contest, multiple players in the tackles, repeat efforts. It's basically our 'brand' And it's competitive against any side.
The problem we've had is in recent times is that it's not been sustainable. It's high intensity and it can be exhausting. Good for a quarter, Good for a half.
It will take a huge effort to take this into the second half and maintain it. There is a reason Freo are where they are on the ladder. Let's see whether our side are up to it, but kudos for reminding us what it can be like when we bring the pressure and effort.

Its as simple as cripps went out of the middle early third term and we got creamed at the coalface. Hewett was always going to draw a tagged to quell his influence and o meara did the job and hurt him going the other way. We arent batting deep enough in there and add a BOG performance from Jackson (worth more cash than TDK) and thats the story.
We are playing a bunch of first year players and it shows.

What an awful quarter. Dockers kick 4 goals, while we kick 1.
That quarter Cripps and Hewett were quieter; skill great, but ... George Hewett: 33 possessions, 7 clearances (none that quarter) and 4 tackles. Patrick Cripps: 27 possessions, 7 clearances and 8 tackles.
Freo picked up around the packs, beating us in clearances. :( And they're kicking straighter.

Imagine we didn't trade up for pick 3.
We'd most likely have 2 young kids instead - 1 mid, 1 small forward/KPP developing. We'd still have Owies on the list. We wouldn't have needed to add......Evans, White, Young....instead we could've added some other areas of need, like mids or HBF's who could have filled a few holes for us and offered depth across multiple positions on the ground, not just FP, and been able to deal with injuries better, thus leading to more wins. That in turn leading to happier players and a coach under less pressure. That in turn leading to TDK and SOS staying, as well as Walsh etc.
Instead... We sold our soul for a bloke we hope will come on, but along with all the pressure we will put on him, he's also recovering from a knee injury. We've jeopardised our long term future because we've been, largely, unable to compete with the best for most of the year, partially off the back of his selection and the domino effect that created.
So yeah.....he better be worth it.

Certainly not his fault. But when the club goes all in on you at the expense of its future performances, then rightly or wrongly, the club has put a giant target on your back.
Its just like Jack Watts at pick 1 (Nic Nat at 2).
The whole footballing word hounded Watts because he couldn't leap tall buildings like pick 2. Stats wise, performance wise, Watts was a 'good enough' footballer. He just didn't do as well as "sideshow Nic" and got run out of town for it.
Similar to Tom Boyd who took all the cash people through at him. Came with all the pressure and expectations. Not his fault, they through mountains of cash at him.
Its us with Martin, McGovern......*insert your whipping boy of choice here*....its not their fault we offered them stacks of cash....but they've been judged as a result.
For the record, I blame the club. Jagga will cop more pressure for than the 2 blokes who got picked before him, simply because of how we got him and what we said when we got him.
