At 14:35 at Ikon on Saturday 13th September.
We will go in as favourites; GC has struggled somewhat.
However, we do have a couple of significant injuries.
Our Line-up:
B: 3 Darcy Vescio 36 Ciara Fitzgerald
HB: 49 Madeline Hendrie 7 Poppy Scholz 21 Harriet Cordner
C: 13 Aisling Reidy 25 Keeley Sherar 17 Dayna Finn
HF: 19 Erone Fitzpatrick 55 Sophie McKay 18 Madeleine Guerin
F: 42 Tara Bohanna 16 Breann Harrington
R: 37 Maddison Torpey 10 Mimi Hill 20 Lily Goss
Int: 1 Amelia Velardo 4 Keeley Skepper 14 Siofra O'Connell 23 Lila Keck 24 Brooke Vickers
Em: 22 Mia Austin 33 Lou-Lou Field 15 Meg Robertson
Abbie McKay is a huge out, as is Jess Good, who missed last week. Yasmin Duursma is also missing, and also would be challenging for a spot in our best line-up with her reasonable form this year. the last one missing is Gab Pound, who is still maybe a month away from playing her first game of the season.
With the limited lists at AFLW level, we don't have many warm bodies left!
Note: Brooke Vickers will be playing her first game in almost 2 years (670 days according to the Carlton website). And our 3rd Irish lass, Aisling Reidy, is debuting this round. Congratulations on their persistence!
Half time:
Carlton: 3 - 7 - 25
Gold Coast: 4 - 0 - 24
If we could kick, this one would be over. As it is, we are clearly missing Abbie McKay and Jess Good. Our rucks have been OK, but not dominant.
Sophie McKay: 2 goals 2.
Lila Keck!
We needed someone to kick straight!
Cordner had 8 intercepts in the first half!
Gold Coast mids getting a lot of ball.
Aisling Reidy gets her first score; alas, a point.
Tara Bohanna!
She now has 2 goals 2.
Dayna Finn! Yes!
We're now 6 - 11 - 47
Finn getting leather poisoning again.
Mimi Hill!
A big term by Hill!
3/4 time:
Carlton: 7 - 11 - 53
Gold Coast: 4 - 0 - 24
GC didn't score that quarter. Mimi Hill and Dayna Hill had big terms. GC have 3 of the 4 top ball getters, but they don't have the support.
Harrington much quieter today, but rucking reasonably.
It would be nice to see the game ...
Kelley Sherar! Yes!
16 disposals to Sherar.
Lila Keck! Kicks her 2nd.
GC get their 1st score after half time: 1 point.
They still have the top 3 posession getters, but our possessions are getting distance and results.
Girls are playing so well!
It’s on Kayo fyi
Sophie McKay: Kicks her 3rd as the most effective forward on the ground.
I don't have it, alas. But I'll enjoy the replay.
All over. GC have struggled to run out games and struggled to do so again. We humbled them after half time, as we finally kicked straight.
Carlton: 10 - 11 - 71
Gold Coast: 4 - 1 - 25
Lilly Goss: 26 possessions and probably her best game. 7 clearances!
Dayna Finn: 26 possessions and a relatively quiet last quarter. But he had huge affect on the game.
Mimi Hill: 24 possessions. 6 clearances.
Erone Fitzpatrick: 23 disposals.
Another great game by the girls and I think the scoreboard flattered Gold Coast.
In 2023 we finished the season in 12th spot with four wins and six losses. Last season we finished 14th with four wins and seven losses. We're currently fourth with four wins and one loss.
Good result. Big game next week.
The boys didn’t give us much to cheer about this year, so it’s great that the girls are able to. I hope they can continue their excellent start to the season. Well done ladies.
The girls are doing the jumper proud. The ball movement, the hunger, the skills, the run, the passion. Our lads could learn a thing or 2.
We had more than 5 times the scoring shots than the suns by the end of it, including a couple that hit the post (and one that hit the little post) it was a dominant display that should've been even more dominant.
Brooke Vickers with her first game back in almost 2 years looked out of touch. A couple others early in their careers didn't show a whole lot, but the majority of the team are very solid. Cordner and Vellardo (and Hendry) down back intecepted everything that came their way.
Bree marked everything that came her way (could get a gig in the blokes side with hands like her)
The irish lasses' are a breath of fresh air who bring a never say die attitude that is infectious.
Sophie McKay should've had 5 and looks like a seasoned veteran, not a player playing their 5th game.
BIG test next week vs the Kangas.....but we are in form, so who knows.
Glad the girls are showing the way.
Post covid they did the "if you don't want to be here you can feck off" and seem to be benefitting from it now.
Hopefully our men's team have a similar reversal of fortunes.
They certainly did move players on, and some high profile players left for what they thought were greener pastures. That really did cause short term pain but I think that it will be to our advantage in the long term.
We seem to have put together a very competitive list that really wants to play for the club and each other.
Another convincing performance once we cleaned up that goalkicking. They are an energetic, team focused, cohesive crew who look like they love their jobs (memo to men's side).
We have backed in a crop of talented youngsters and supported them with quality seniors. It's coming together nicely. Well done 👏
