Home game for hawks, at our home.
Good news on the injury front....
https://www.afl.com.au/aflw/news/1452134/aflw-injury-list-fw2-gun-forward-aine-mcdonagh-among-four-hawthorn-hawks-set-for-tests
Hawks have 10 players on their injury list, albeit 4 are tests to play.
We have 0. Yep. ZERO.
Surely we have to be favourites going into this, despite the hawks beating us earlier in the year and finishing above us on the ladder.
And the Hawks have to use the away team’s dungeon rooms 😇
We’re certainly the form team now and our loss was back in rd 2.
Our line-up:
B: 3 Darcy Vescio 49 Madeline Hendrie
HB: 36 Ciara Fitzgerald 21 Harriet Cordner 7 Poppy Scholz
C: 1 Amelia Velardo 5 Abbie McKay 17 Dayna Finn
HF: 42 Tara Bohanna 55 Sophie McKay 19 Erone Fitzpatrick
F: 22 Mia Austin 25 Keeley Sherar
R: 16 Breann Harrington 10 Mimi Hill 20 Lily Goss
Int: 6 Gabriella Pound 24 Brooke Vickers 18 Madeleine Guerin 11 Yasmin Duursma 12 Jessica Good
Em: 13 Aisling Reidy 37 Maddison Torpey 14 Siofra O'Connell
No changes, which doesn't happen often. And our girls are about as injury free as you can get this time of year.
I find it a little bit hard to fathom why keeley skepper is not deemed good enough to be in our best 26.
Her form hasn't been that great, but ...
I would have considered her, as we know she can perform.
Shes built for finals footy. Loves the tough stuff and doesn't take s backwards step.
Take her over duursma and austin.
Mia Austin! Good way to start the game!
So if we win we go to Brisbane for something different. Still, way better than playing North.
Attacking well; not kicking straight. :(
Sophie McKay! We're getting the ball out of the centre.
Poppy Scholz! 3 goals to nothing!
8 shots to 0. If it were 8 goals!
3 points to Bree Harrington. :(
Mimi Hill! Just before quarter time!
Quarter time:
Carlton: 4 - 7 - 31
Hawthorn: 0 - 0 - 0
Mimi Hill had a quarter to remember!
Mia Austin! Kicks her 2nd. I think that is her best.
Oh well, they had to kick 1. :(
Their turn for some dominance. We need to get the contested ball again.
Sophie McKay! Her 2nd against the run of play!
And they get a 2nd. :( We need to get back to winning the contests and the clearances.
Half time and Hawthorn get back into the game.
Carlton: 6 - 7 - 43
Hawthorn: 2 - 4 - 16
Hawthorn took control of the areas we dominated in the 1st quarter.
Hill not as prominent that quarter, but still has 16 possessions.
Abbie McKay: 14 possessions and 5 clearances.
Maddie Guerin: 9 possessions, 5 tackles and 3 clearances.
Keely Sherar injured. :(
Abbie McKay! Just what we need!
Very sleek from Abbey 🙌
Vescio showing her worth
Dayna Finn! Now 40 points in front!
And it finishes with a team-goal
These girls are tough as nails
Dayna Finn! Repeat please!
Another great team goal 👏🏼
Well? I never thought I hear the words "well oiled machine" describing a Carlton side.
They are scary good.
Lilly Goss! Another goal!
Geez. Even Lily Goss puts one through
Repeat of q1 dominance
Back on. Don't know how bad this 'injury' was.
Vescio positions so well
When you:
1. Hit targets by hand and foot.
2. Hold Marks.
3. Kick the easy goals that must be kicked.
Anything can happen.
A couple of unlucky misses. Great pressure and connection though.
Q3 2pts - 4.3
I could speak many superlatives. Hope the boys are watching and taking notes / inspiration
3/4 Time and the game is probably won.
Carlton: 10 - 10 - 70
Hawthorn: 2 - 6 - 18
Mimi Hill: 27 possessions, 2 tackles, 1 clearance.
Abbie McKay: 20 possessions, 5 tackles and 7 clearances!
Maddie Guerin: 16 possessions, 8 tackles and 5 clearances.
Sophie McKay: 3rd goal!
Damn. They kick their 3rd. >:D And 4th. :(
All over!
Carlton: 11 - 13 - 79
Hawthorn: 4 - 9 - 33
copped a couple in junk time. Better off taking the foot off the pedal for next week than not.
Shame about those junk time goals, but a super effort by the girls. Doing the club and supporters proud. Pretty decent turnout from what I could tell on the TV.
Best of luck next week against a formidable opponent.
Yes, very formidable and in Brisbane. Prefer that to playing North.
We are playing well enough to make the GF. Pity then we may make it again then play someone near unbeatable. Happened the first time we made the GF and might happen again. Be nice to get there though.
all bets are off come grand final day. The longer north Melbourne go without losing the more likely are to drop one when least expected. A couple of unlucky injuries at the wrong time, and it can all happen.
Sat where all the Hawthorn people were. They are definitely a Club that believes they are entitled.
I've seen more than a little of that myself. Glad they failed, and failed so badly 3 weeks in a row.
Fantastic performance across the field. A real team effort. Glad I don't have to select our best players.
Best of luck for an excellent recovery and preparation.
We went to the game -
Unfortunately spent the first quarter lining up to get food and missed it all 🙄
Fantastic game, the girls are tough and play on well and mark well. A few errors here and there but they regrouped quickly.
I love Sophie’s enthusiasm and showmanship, it is nice to see.
Couldn’t help but still be worried when we were 6 goals up! Thanks to the recent effort in the men’s team I never count a win until the very end!
Well oiled machine was a phrase the commentators used describing us at present and i think it's very apt.
Not many weak links out there.
Carltons last 2 finals efforts have ended in a road trip to Brisbane. Hopefully third time lucky
There were plenty of lessons to learn from last night, but one really sticks in my mind; you have your better players available and you are much more likely to contend.
When was the last time the boys had a whole list to choose from? Early 1996. That is an entire generation without having our best line-up available.
Not sure what our AFL program can do, but Innes and his minions can see what is required.
That said, can you see anyone who didn't play last night making a case for a spot next week? Skepper is one who comes to mind, even if her form has been pretty ordinary this season. However, 3 weeks ago I was saying that Maddy Guerin was having a less than stellar year. In the last 3 weeks she has been nothing short of brilliant. Last night she had huge numbers: 24 possessions, 11 tackles and 7 clearances. That is Cripps-like.
Of our lowest 4 possessions getters, one was Jess Good who dominated the ruck!
Maddie Hendrie didn't get a lot of ball, but she did her job. I don't think she would be under pressure.
Tara Bohanna only had 7 possessions and scored only 2 points, but there is no way known she'll miss.
Gab Pound? 5 possessions and only 66% game time.
Powerful display by the girls!
Play of the night in the third quarter:
Intercept mark by Vescio - kick to Vickers.
Vickers - kick to Guerin.
Guerin - kick to Fitzpatrick.
Fitzpatrick - long kick to Bohanna for contested mark.
Bohanna - handpass to Hill.
Hill - kick to Sholz for contested mark.
Sholz - handpass to Finn.
Finn - GOAL!!
The thing with Gab is that she gets important possessions or lays decisive tackles when they count. She had a quiet night but her experience and footy nous could be very handy next week. I think that those four will keep their places and we may well go with an unchanged lineup.
It is a strange position to have a winning Carlton team and be looking at where we can strengthen it :)
Brooke Vickers for Keeley Skepper for mine.
I think Duursma is still a level behind where we'd want her to be as well, but would be 'about' the 22nd-24th best player on our list.
Imagine if we still had our former skipper Kez Peterson??
