Title: VFL Rd 6 2026: Carlton vs St Kilda at Carlton
Post by: crashlander on April 29, 2026, 10:23:33 pm
This game is set down for Saturday at 12:05 at Carlton.
Our team should have a few more AFL listed players available this week. Hopefully, enough to deliver the knockout blow!

Really looking forward to this game... especially keen to see the progress of Flynn Young, Jack Ison, Wade Derksen, Billy Wilson. Hopefully B Camporeale returns to the midfield. Hopefully HOK improves. (Although Flynn, Jack and Billy should be in the seniors we know they won't get a gig... Vossy likes his faves and the tried and true).

It may be better if they all stick together in the VFL and grow from there as a group to unleash at a later date :D

So it seems that Cody Walker will play his first official game for the Blues this weekend, with the youngster to play in the VFL at Ikon Park. Extra incentive to tune in and watch. Hope he goes well

It's more that Vossy understands that your chances of winning games of footy diminish significantly when you have too many newbies in the team. Billy, Wade and Flynn must be in the mix - Jack needs more development - but only at the expense of other first/second year players.  Saady, the Sherriff and Georgie have to be in the mix too.

Jack may need more development, but he's coming along like a house on fire.
He's averaging nearly 3 goals a game (2.8 )

Yes, I think that he's going to be a ripper.  I suspect that he'll get his AFL opportunity after the bye.

Finally!

B:  41 Matt Duffy   33 Lewis Young   47 Wade Derksen
HB:   28 Harry Charleson   37 Jordan Boyd   15 Billy Wilson
C:   31 Campbell Chesser   36 Cooper Lord   13 Blake Acres
HF:   8 Lachie Fogarty   43 Ashton Moir   45 Flynn Young
F:   39 Talor Byrne   40 Hudson O'Keeffe   30 Jack Ison
R:   56 Flynn Riley   29 George Hewett   16 Ben Camporeale
Int:   61 Dane Harvey   70 Darcy Hogg   58 Jack Sammartino  76 Cody Walker   74 Logan Prout   64 Archie Stevens   59 Cooper Vickery   62 Oliver Warburton   51 Jaiden Magor   67 Tom Evans   72 Charlie Cotter   75 Liam Farrar

Em:   77 Will Cookson

Our team doesn't look as unbalanced as it was last week, but one Emergency will definitely not play, maybe all three won't. If Flynn Young doesn't play at all again, he will go off the boil.

[1] Note that Flynn Riley is named as #1 ruck, not Hudson O'Keefe. That tells you how ordinary HOK has been lately.
Riley has his issues, but he is at least as good as Reidy. I don't know if we can afford to put him on the list with our present ruck stocks, but I'm sure someone will pick him up come MSD. Good rucks are not easy to come by.
What we will do if someone does pick up Riley in the MSD, I have no idea, as we don't have any other VFL listed rucks. Tom Stapleton? I can't say I've even seen him play yet.

[2] Cooper Lord was a little unlucky to get dropped. His stats last week were at least as good as Cerra's. On the other hand, he will be back sooner rather than later.
George Hewett: I reckon George is playing better than Cerra is at the moment, but the match committee is sticking with Cerra. He is younger and he has a longer contract; George has only one year left on his. Can this be the reason?  Doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

[3] It will be interesting to see Cody Walker in action against men. The lad looked good during the pre-season. Just as long as some St. Kilda thug doesn't try to take him out.

[4] Derkson is defence. I'm a little surprised after last week, but is it because of the matchups? I hope to see him forward again.

Im not sure which umpire we've annoyed but the fraternity appear to hate us, and have given two soft frees to st. Kilda inside 50 directly in front for two of their goals. One was technically there for in the back.

The other that dow just converted was a "holding the man" tackle that lingered too long apparently.

Which is garbage.

If you guys want to watch what im watching and tell me why coaching is our issue im all ears, but the turnovers in the last 5 mins are just mind boggling.

Complete lack of composure at vfl level by afl listed players and have welcomed the pressure as a result.

A couple of mistakes from Wilson in couple of minutes
Poor kick out of  defence and then should have hit up O'Keefe rather than taking the shot.

the major worry is the inability to sum up a situation and make a good decision.

10 free kicks to 2 in this quarter in st. Kildas favour.

Very disappointing 2nd quarter. Thought Cody Walker was good when he came on. we were hemmed in the back and did some horrible kicks under pressure. Will test the mettle of these wannabe players in the second half.

Max King can’t take a trick and his absence might help us get through this match if our players change their attitude…

Doesnt panic and has the moves to get out of trouble. Interviewed after the game, says goes into the club every day as if he is on the list already. That answerss my question as to whether we would pass on him at the end of the year, the answer is categorically no.

Maybe not.
Our three emergencies were Lewis Young, Flynn Young and Lord.
It may be we're looking fine for tonight with no late outs.

But if we were to get one, in warmups say... then we need one of these guys to come in.
So we give Lord a quarter and a bit so he doesn't miss a week of football.
If he's needed as a late in we haven't tuckered him out.
But chances are he will just be on standby.

From the statistics:

[1] George Hewett deserves to be ack in the seniors. he managed 31 possessions, 2 goals 2, 6 clearances, 1 tackle. The 1 tackle bothers me a bit, considering.

[2] Apart from a couple of ordinary moments, Billy Wilson played another good one. 26 possessions and his run from defence and long kicking is excellent.

[3] Cody Walker was out best best possession getter and he didn't play much early. He was crucial in our comeback in the 3rd.

[4] Lachlan Fogarty: Fog may have got it 23 times today, with 6 tackles, but his thinking! Doesn't make quick decisions at all. Should have 3 other shots on goal.

[5] Our rucks broke even on the day, but their limitations were obvious. HOK is struggling and not doing any role particularly well. Riley was better.

[6] Chesser disappointed. 15 possessions and not the impact we really need.

[7] We had a lot more of the ball, but we are a high possessions team, not very efficient. We had 12 frees to 30, which is something that needs addressing. We really need to complain, and in the seniors as well.
We actually lost the clearance battle, 28 to 33. We had 46 tackles compared to 26. That was a big plus!

Walker has to be a definite in for the AFL side next week.
Oh...wait ::)  :(

Don't think any of our players showed enough to get promoted.
Hewett's a possibility, but probably not as good as last week.
Flynn Young and Wilson had a couple of 'bad' moments but were involved.
A lot will depend on how we go tonight.

Lord was good early.   He went off the game changed...  😀

Hewett and acres shouldn't play vfl for too long.  Both of them are too good for this level.

Of the rest, ison put his hand along with Wilson and young.  Charleson is interesting.  Can see him getting a go soon.

The trouble is in the 3rd all of them made poor decisions at times.

That's the problem these guys have.
When you're a fringe player trying for a spot in the seniors you can't afford to make poor decisions.

Your poor decisions get magnified, and the question gets asked...
"If he makes a poor decision or displays a skill deficiency at VFL level, how can we be confident that he won't display the same traits at senior level where the speed of the game and the pressure is so much greater."

Just on Charleson...
He's not flashy.
He goes about his job and probably flies under the radar a bit.
But he's a consistent performer who should deserve a spot at some stage this year.

One who is under the pump is Ben Camporeale.
There will be a number ahead of both him and Lucas next year.
They need to get a shuffle on and start to show something pretty soon or they may be in strife come the end of the year.

Having a look at the replay. The Umpires are not going to enjoy their review of this match. They almost managed to get the 'Aints over the line.
That said, I liked it that we fought back after being bested. I liked our application after things started not to work. The seniors could really learn from that.

It's pretty standard for one or more of the emergencies to play a quarter in the VFL if the VFL game precedes the AFL game.
