Title: VFL Rd 10 2026 Carlton vs Geelong at Carlton
Post by: crashlander on May 28, 2026, 09:49:40 pm
Another Saturday game, this time at 12:05 at home. Just hope we show more than last week. We'll have to, as Geelong are on top.
Selected sides not yet available, :( :( With some luck, we might have Williams, Saad and Lord back. Interesting to see how we use our 3 available rucks. Riley has to play, now he is listed.
Also interesting to see who we've picked up to replace Riley on the VFL list, as well as a certain unnamed defender who St. Kilda burnt.
Would also like to see more from Cottrell and Duffy. Duffy didn't look bad a few weeks ago, but his last couple of weeks have been not so hot.

Finally!
B: 41 Matt Duffy 33 Lewis Young 47 Wade Derksen HB: 28 Harry Charleson 37 Jordan Boyd 42 Adam Saad C: 36 Cooper Lord 46 Matthew Cottrell 59 Cooper Vickery HF: 8 Lachie Fogarty 70 Darcy Hogg 6 Zac Williams F: 43 Ashton Moir 40 Hudson O'Keeffe 58 Jack Sammartino R: 56 Flynn Riley 31 Campbell Chesser 16 Ben Camporeale Int: 68 Taj Logan 74 Logan Prout 62 Oliver Warburton 75 Liam Farrar 64 Archie Stevens 69 Cooper Hamilton 61 Dane Harvey 57 Alwyn Davey 67 Tom Evans 77 Will Cookson 78 Tyson Gresham 65 Jed Rule 80 Thomas Howard
[1] So, we now know what we'll do if we have 3 rucks available: rest on of them. Reidy out this week, Riley in. [2] We look to have more leadership this week with Lord, Williams and Saad into the side. [3] It is no sure thing that all 3 Emergencies will play. Otherwise, we wouldn't have named such a large bench.
[4] I wonder if Davey will play? I find it unlikely, but ...
[5] 15 AFL listed players are named. Probably 14 of them will play. Hopefully, all of them.
[6] The side looks stronger, as the midfield will be boosted by Lord and Williams. Last weekend only Ben Camporeale really did much of our mids. I hope Cottrell can stand up this week: he has struggled this year so far.

I'm a bit worried for Cottrell. At his best he should be playing in the senior side, but he's been far from it. He may be lucky that he has a year to run on his contract or he could be on the chopping block. As it is he might be shopped around for a later pick unless his season picks up.

Half time We've probably forgotten this was on. I've only just picked it up. Geelong lead by 11 points O Keefe just missed running in from about five yards out
Lord 17 Ben C 16 Chesser 15 the leading possession winners.
Only going on stats and Riley is doing most of the rucking. Not going so well are Moir 3 disposals and O'Keefe 4 touches.

Scott and Buckley at the game having a good conversation. Might be a few of these Cats playing next game. ;) :D
O'Keefe getting a few touches this quarter...and kicks a goal.

22.43 into the third Cats by 41 now. They're well on top, and we have a few not contributing.
Our three top diposal winners in the first half have barely added to their possessions and we're not getting a lot of drive elsewhere.

Ugly. Carlton: 12 - 9 - 81 Geelong: 20 - 11 - 131
Not that bad, except for the 3rd quarter, which was awful. Our structural issues are very obvious at this level: nobody to be the big target down forward, and dependent on centre clearances. Since we didn't dominate in the ruck, it was hard yakka. :(
Ben Camporeale: 30 possessions, 7 clearances, 2 tackles: Our best statistically. Cooper Lord: 25 possessions, 6 tackles, 6 marks, and 5 clearances: the only question I have is was he playing on George Stevens? If so, it was a disaster, as Stevens had 40 possessions. Matthew Cottrell: 26 possessions, 1 clearance, 8 marks and 3 tackles: not yet into form, but better than he has been. Just not sure he is an inside mid. Darcy Hogg: 26 possessions, 5 clearances, 2 tackles: not bad.
Fairly even in the ruck, but Riley wasn't bad, but his taps were not as effective as Stanley's were. They got much better clearances than we did. Not much time in the ruck for Hudson O'Keefe, and not a lot of impact. He is really struggling.

Cooper Lord kicked three goals so not a bad effort all round from him, even if his opponent got a bit of the ball.
I only watched the last half of the last quarter so I can't really comment on player performances but, on the stats alone, Coops and Ben Camporeale are putting their hands up.

I thought Lord did well and is unlucky to be out of the seniors imo, Ben Campos problem is his use of the footy and the depth in the seniors with regards his position. Not sure who is tutoring Ben but he needs someone like Greg Williams to put a bit of polish into his game and have the confidence to take his time a bit more, always looks rushed when taking his kicks and sprays them. Interesting seeing Bowes and Worpel in the twos for Geelong, thought the former was very good and surprised he isnt in the seniors, didnt see much of Worpel... re: Riley.....I was happy with his game vs Stanley and he only needs opportunities to learn the game more quickly at the higher level.

Ben C is exactly where he needs to be - doing an apprentice in the seconds and working on his game until the opportunity arises.

Walker coming in wont help him and Ben is purely an extractor so he probably needs a player like Hewett to be traded out as I cant see how he will be any higher in the pecking order next season. Im happy to persist with him as I like father/sons in the team but I dont know if the Campo clan are prepared to wait for him to get opportunities, ditto his brother.

Ben is about 10 years too late to the AFL party. His type are not really required in the modern game.

They are OK, but they are being slaughtered by expectation, to me the twins compete against someone like Carroll, Lord or Cottrell, so it's going to be tough going for them.
Maybe they need to do a type of reinvention.

Speaking of Williams...he had about 500 more handballs than he did kicks over his career. He averaged 12.5 kicks to 14.5 handballs Ben C does similar...he's averaging around 11 kicks to 15 handballs. Disposal accuracy is less of an issue when he's handballing as opposed to kicking. Players that play a similar position are even more uneven. Both Cripps and Hewett have wide differentials. Both average less than 10 kicks a game. He may be more of a weapon developing that area further in the short term.
We need to see him at senior level soon and the best opportunities are in the coming weeks. Otherwise there may not be a 2027 for him.

Williams handballs were like kicks and he also kicked big moment goals. Ben has one string to his bow only and that's being a good extractor. Maybe he can add being a tagger to his game if he can't impact offensively, I just think being an extractor only is a throwback to the past. Libba is about the only player I can think of who still plays that way...Tom Mitchell was probably the other until the speed of the game caught up with him..

I'm not confident he'll be on our list next year, he needs to show some point of difference to other's vying for similar positions. So far we're not seeing it. Lucas with his serious injury is probably more at risk because time is running out for him.

Think Ben C will be a decent player for some club, just has too many in front of him with his style of play with us. He'll win a bucketload of clearances, get his hands on it plenty of times but we have many of those. Hence why Kennedy isn't with us. Like to look at him in the seniors though before the year is out. Right now though he won't get in.

Cripps and Hewett will not last forever. Our player development process has always been our achillles heel - hence we rely far too much on bringing in ready-to-play troops at high cost, unlike the top teams that uncover and develop their own talent.
Ben C is the perfect example. In 2-3 years time when Crippa and George are done or needing a rest, we can have a ready-to-go replacement, provided he gets the right development over the next 18 months. I can see a midfield of Jagga, Cody, Walsh, Ison, Lord and Ben C from 2029 onwards.

Fair enough. I would like to think that the club is thinking 'development', as I would like to see Ben succeed. However, if I were Ben I would: [1] use Patrick Cripps' running coach so he can maximize what speed he has. Crippa isn't quick, but he does maximize what pace he has. He clearly knew it from the start and took steps to improve this as much as he could. [2] hit the gym. Crippa has the advantage of strength. He can break tackles because he has real power. Ben can really improve in this area, as he already has the skill to get to the right places. He doesn't have to end up with a physique like Cripps, but the ability to apply that strength could be crucial. Think Josh Rachele, who may have more speed, but has the muscle to break tackles. [3] work on his disposal. When given time, Ben's kicking is reasonably effective, no matter what it looks like. Under pressure less so, perhaps. He puts in another good pre-season or two working his disposal and he will be the perfect replacement for our aging stars.
One thing we haven't seen much of so far from both Campos is their marking. Both of them can take some really strong marks. Luke can take a hanger. I don't think either of them has the confidence yet to show their skills in this area. They are trying to fill in roles and no taking risks.

I remember when we picked up their father there was a photo of him taking a huge speccy for Woodville West Torrens in the newspaper. Don't recall him taking any big marks in the AFL.

Indeed. The Old Man was solid, but unspectacular. Both the boys are better in the air. We just need to see more of it. Some of it is body strength, as they are often out-bodied at this point. Another few kg of muscle and I hope it will be different.

When you are up against people you can comfortably run into the ground, it's much easier to take speccies, especially late in games, everyone around you is exhausted and you are still fresh as a daisy.
That just doesn't happen in AFL.

Are we talking about Scott Camporeale? If so, there was a patch when he played for us where he was a premier midfielder in the comp. His ability to receive, run carry, distribute or kick goals himself was elite. Broke my heart when he defected.

Not so much these days, that's very true. Even the best aerialists tend to do it early in games these days, if they do it at all. Note Mitch McGovern. Similarly, there were a couple of big Geelong marks, in the first quarter. None afterwards.
H comes into his own sometimes later in games, even though he doesn't get far off the ground. At 200+ cm and with a huge wingspan, he plucks them late quite often, when his defenders can no longer jump to spoil. He has taken some match-winning grabs late in games over the journey. As they say, a good big man doesn't get any smaller.
The guys who can pull out the big leap late include a number of younger, leaping rucks that are now proliferating. Tom de Koning, was something of a prototype, even if he isn't doing it much at the 'Aints. When we beat Richmond in Rd 1 a few years back, Pitto wore Nankervis down. In the last quarter, a tired Nankervis could do nothing as Tom jumped over him. It was similar when we lost to Collingwood this year. A tired Pitto couldn't control Steene in the last quarter, and Collingwood got on top.
Being able to farm that sort of leaping is becoming important. because, as LP noted, tired players don't take many speckies.

Scott Camporeale was indeed one of the best mids, as he had the tank to run hard all day and enough pace to break the lines. Then, with his excellent kicking, he drove the ball a long way forward, often to advantage. It was disappointing when neither of the twins seemed to have his huge tank or the potentiality of his kicking. Both of the boys can run well, but just don't have that extra pace, especially late in games. However, I don't think they can't improve their pace, both of them. Patrick Cripps, early in his career, did a lot of work with some running coaches to develop his running. He will never be quick, but he made the most of what he had. He worked on his explosiveness. I would like to see the twins take the same path, and develop that burst. It would do both of them the world of good and might even give them enough time to get their kicks right.

Cerra is the one. Don't use his last two seasons as much, his hammys have caused him a lot of grief but in 2023 he was massive until he broke down.
