I thought the NRL and AFL commentators were poor, it felt like our lot had placed the mortgage payment on Turkiye!
Turkey have a much stronger team of individuals, and for the most part played pretty well
This was a major win for us, and won well.
I had greek commentary over here so cant comment on that.
Least excited ive been for a world cup in years.
I have little interest in soccer outside of 2 things....
1. My son plays soccer, so i watch that every week.
2. The world cup.
Only today did i learn that there are 48 teams this year, thats how much of an eye i've been keeping on it.
Can anyone share how that came about?
Reeks of someone like Trump wanting bragging rights of 'the biggest' or 'the best'.
Up until a few days ago I couldn't have named one player or the coach in the team, now I know a few with one absolute stand out, Nesory Irankunda who just kicked our first goal of the tournament. He's young and small with a kick that is said to have put a ball through a net. Apparently he got that from his ol man who was know to break goal posts with a kick of the ball. Nes once hit a defender in the head and was concussed for a month. He has been known to do a Michael Jackson dance while donning a white clittery glove after a goal. I think this world cup might be fun to watch.
The Aussies were defensively strong. Attacked when they needed to but seemed to play strong defence first and foremost. Reminded me of Italy of old. Like AFL/VFL, "premierships" are built off the backs of a strong defensive unit.
Fifa wanted bigger broadcast rights, so expanded comp with more games results in more money.
So not trump but the usual suspects for why it was extended.
Im a purist, this was a giant mistake.
Proof again of how a well drilled well coached team with a smart gameplan to maximize what they have can be the difference in any sport even on the world stage.
Turkey squad value is $473M euros ($775M Aud) while Aust is $77M euros (126M Aud)
We are 1/6th of their value and they best player is worth more than our entire squad yet we win 2-0.

I think it's no accident that the coached dropped some of the old school who probably wore too many battle scars to shake off the stigma of not being good enough, we had a unified team, and a team that was full of kids who did not know they were supposed to have an honourable loss.
I hope the tossers suggesting we tank to get high draft picks take notice! ;)

Just to dot point the way the game has gone, we are seeing drinks breaks sponsored by x in both halves.
In the australia vs Turkey game it was a balmy 20 degrees in Canada.

We bottled our 2025 "Garage Hermitage" Heathcote Shiraz yesterday and stopped for lunch to watch the game. BBQ scotch fillet (nice and thick) was down with the newly bottled vintage, it was a good day.
The biggest battle of the world cup may be between the organisers and the England supporters and their chants and antics. :D

Was above board from where I was sitting.
It's not the ones they pay, it's the ones they miss.
They might claim their game is easier to umpire, but they still miss some absolute howlers. It does make you wonder about a lot of things in the game.
Thankfully, I don't bother. I have enough issues worrying about the umpiring at our games each weekend to worry about things as dodgy as soccer.
I would judge the sport on this world cup which is the worst officiated I have ever seen.
From a laymen's point of view, I cant believe how much they get sucked in by players antics. Most of the time when they show the replay there was SFA in it.
I cannot stand the rolling around and the acting. carry on, It could be stamped out in instant. I saw one common sense ref call play on a number of times in one particular game and all of the sudden, the rolling around antics, turned into the players springing up and chasing the player with the ball. More of this please.
Refs will have to step up now for Argentina.

This reversal of the Norway goal was disgraceful. If the ref couldnt see the blatant dive or flopping by the defender then its any wonder I cant watch the game (other than the WC).
nah, you cant push a player over like. In fact pushing is not allowed at all, which is why it was penalised.
The part thats annoying is that they are inconsistent with these things, and sometimes players get away with it.
I see the Yanks and FIFA have angered the establishment with yet another one of the half time extraveganza BS at the WC Final.
The laws of the game states that half time breaks must not exceed 15min but will be extended to 30mins to accommodate the rubbish entertainment.
