Professional win that never looked in doubt. responded well everytime it looked like they were coming so again such a stark difference to the start of the year.
Dean is a absolute beaty and has become a fan favorite in 15 games.
No new injuries, get to bank the 4 points get some percentage and onto the tiges.

We really needed a big percentage booster today, as good as it was to win it was a bit of an opportunity missed.
It's not going to be good enough to finish on par with the Filth, because they might be injury ravaged but they have an easier run home. Us, Norp and the Suns have a tougher run home.

A team performance....
No Carlton player had less than 11 disposals. And one of those who did only have 11 disposals kicked 3 goals made 5 tackles and had 7 score involvements. ;)

Looked a million bucks in the first quarter. Fell asleep for most of the middle half of the game. Put the foot down a bit in the last.
Thankfully it was just west coast and they couldn't capitilise in the middle....and it was a relatively comfortable win overall.
Be interested to see how Pittonet pulls up. Looks shot early on, ump stopped the game because he stayed down so long. Not sure what it was if it was captured on TV. But hopefully he pulls up ok.

Bit of a watch on Cripps's hand. It was giving him a bit of trouble. There were a couple of times when his handball attempts weren't the best.

Agree, good win but needed a 4 qtr effort + percentage booster. Jack Ison needs a spell IMO. Not moving well, seems to have lost confidence. Blake Acres also poor. Harry Dean, what can you say. Kept Waterman goaless for the first time this year.

There must have been a lot of us at the game today, with so little comment in the match thread. Fair enough: not the worst outcome.
There were some things I really liked about today: [1] Even though Pitto was well beaten when it came to taps, he was by far the more effective of the 2 rucks in the way he allowed our mids to get use of the ball. He was in a lot of marking contests and he even managed a couple of tackles. Williams is a jumper, which Pitto always finds challenging. Pitto had 8 clearances himself, and made a path for our mids. For all that, Williams was easily one of their best. The ruck is a real structural issue for us, as we don't have someone with a huge leap to stick in the middle. Last night GWS used Brown and it changed the game; he was more mobile after the contests, and he could jump right over the Hawthorn rucks (who should have been pinged so many time for going over the middle, but Pitto seems to be the one they ping). The free top Williams that he goaled from was the worst ruck infringement decision I can recall. An absolute joke that no player seemed to understand.
[2] Ben Ainsworth had his best game in our colours, and he has had some good ones. He got 28 possessions, kicked a goal ( should have planted the other one), and showed heaps in the middle. Gold Coast never seemed to get the same sort of output from him. Are we using him smarter? Or is he trying to show why we bothered? Either way, I'm happy. He has been a major positive for us.
[3] Harry Dean is growing before our eyes. He was so good today, with marks and spoils and tackles and ... You get the picture. He is certainly living up to his draft placing. On the other hand, Wade Derksen was about as unheralded as a player can get, but he has stood up very well in recent weeks. He may not be quick, but he moves well and his intercepts today were telling. Our key defenders took on Waterman and Shanahan and destroyed them. Nick Haynes also did some really special things.
[4] Talor Byrne got some real result for effort today, but for the chest mark he spilt. His snap was one of the goals of the year. For all that, I'd like to see him work on his kicking and his strength in the off-season. I think he is going to be a keeper.

Seems to be surprisingly strong and hard to move for a smaller player - certainly uses his body well against bigger opponents.

41k at the game. Not sure what they were expecting, but it appears it was more than they thought as they sold out of food at a number of places on Level 3 BEFORE half time! 100's lined up outside the other places. Never experienced that at the footy before!

Jack Ison needs a spell IMO. Not moving well, seems to have lost confidence.
He seemed more instinctive in his earlier games but in the last couple he seems to be thinking too much and playing slower.
If he's play next week and we win he breaks Ryan Houlihan's record. 6-0 is the best start to a career a player has. Play as if we win Ison holds the record outright.

I am somewhat surprised at the lukewarm positivity on here. This is a big deal. Not many teams win 6 on the trot.
We monstered West Coast in very facet : in the air, ground ball, attack, pressure, effort, defence. We led the entire game. All the stats are significantly in our favour. They've been in close games in recent weeks and managed to jag a win against Essendon. I know despite their song, West Coast are not exactly flying high, but it's been several weeks since they lost by over 5 or 6 goals (in fact R7 against St Kilda).
Camarades, encore un effort !

Not sure people know how to react given our horrendous start to the season, me included. This teams performance is a far cry from the one that ran out at the start of the season so hard to know what to believe. Games against bogie teams in the coming weeks will be telling but let’s all enjoy this resurgence as it so probably where we should have been all along in 2026.

That's fair enough I guess. I'm not sure I would call the recent performances a far cry, although this is clearly a contentious issue. I think what has happened in recent weeks is that we have turned the winnable games earlier in the season into winning games. That in itself is a great achievement, for which Fraser deserves considerable credit. But I'm not seeing the quantum leaps that others are. It's a progression IMO.

15 wins, 91 losses 14% win loss record over their past 106 games. Even Pagan managed a 25% win rate with us.
Oh they beat essendon did they? The team that has 1 win from their past 27 games? What an achievement.

His bodying skills are excellent. He can also take a leap, although we haven't seen much of that yet. Still, he has a lot of development left in him. He could well end up with some of the Wayne Harmes about him. And that extra muscle would help his kicking depth and his tackling.

I think the Weagles aren't going to be the rabble they have been. They seem to be on the right track. That is why I am happy we managed to put the foot down when we did. If we played the Weagles of, say, 2024 today, we'd have won by over 100 points, even without a Charlie Curnow kicking 10. They have been awful, but they are not any longer. Hopefully, we can see them stumble, rather than come on. That way, we might be able to convince Reid that being on the east coast is a better alternative (especially in a dark blue guernsey).

Eagles had a decent 5 weeks leading to . Beat GWS, lost by a goal to Port, after beating them early in the year in Adelaide, lost to North by a point, beat them early in the year, and had a very close one against the Pies on Pendles record game. Of course, beat Essendon as we all do, as you said. Bar a couple of real super stinkers, they have been better than other years.
Nothing to trouble us though. 9 goal win that felt like 5 but should have been 15.

Far cry may be a stretch but we don't look like going missing for a quarter or more which had become embarrassingly predictable. The St Kilda game was the worst I’ve seen live for a long time, hopefully those days are behind us.

I think fans are measuring the result against our recent history, so it looks extremely positive, it's like having a meat raffle win when you are a pauper, the win is a feast.
But it's the wrong relative measure, it should be measured against competition wide results, we aren't supping on lobster just yet, really it was the sort of minimal result we should be expecting if we are any good at all!

The way it's going we'll be 2 games from 6th after this weekend unless Adelaide can pluck this one right of the fire. I'll worry about 10th first though.
After Richmond we have 3 tough games in the run home against Hawthorn, Brissie and Freo, the rest against sides around us in the same position. Hawthorn has been ok lately but nothing great, and hoping by the time we get to Freo they may have peaked and gone over the edge. As long as we beat Richmond and go 8-8, I'd like to win 5 from the last 7, giving us 13 wins. Even 4 gives us 12.
But, as we know, this is Carlton, so only focussing on Richmond and best not get too far ahead of myself.

I'm pretty positive about our recent form but I wrote in the "in game" thread at half time that I wasn't completely happy with the way we were travelling. It just seemed to lack the intensity of the previous week. While physical in parts, there just didn't seem to be the same attack on the contest and there were times when they moved the ball too easily.
But two things can be true at once. We were never really in trouble and had their measure. Everyone contributed to some extent, and but for some wayward kicking we would have won by a lot more.

He has to be now, but I’m glad both the club and Fraser are holding firm on their positions and not letting the media badger us into feeding their narrative. Davies stating Fraser has more to learn before being considered was also curious and smacked of a red herring to me trying to throw the hounds off the scent. We’ll know soon enough , for now the club is giving Fraser clear air to do what he can with the team for the rest of the season.

Didn't think we played particularly well, Eagles applied very little pressure on the ball carrier and set up poorly defensively. We struggled to deal with Reid's pace and explosiveness. Pitto is a wholehearted trier but the new ruck rules have crucified him and appear to have be written to exclusively punish him....it's going to really hurt us against the stronger teams and it's shake your head kind of stuff. Just bewildering.

Not next week. We need that win...but I reckon it wouldn't be the worst thing to actually drop a game. Just to get a bit of a check to remind players it's not always going to go our way. We've seen how they handle the winning. I'm curious to see how coach and players go when faced with a loss.
It's especially important that we see Fraser coping with a setback if he is going to eventually be part of the process. It's not a scenario we need to deliberately plan for...it will happen given our draw ahead. When it does we just need to realise it's not the end of the world...but an opportunity to assess.

No doubt the new rules have hurt him. What i noticed having rewatched part of the game was that the umpires are barely throwing it up. If you look at the timing, Williams was running and jumping as soon as the ball left the umpires hands and was reaching the ball at its peak. This is essentially taking the timing of the jump out of the contest as well. Previously when bounced, the height would vary. Now the umpires seem to all throw to the same height, at least they all went the same height in the first quarter.
Need to introduce more randomness into it otherwise the jumper always wins.

This was one of those 'danger games' when being the hot favorite was pressure we couldn't handle yet we handled it from the first bounce to the siren and won by 10 goals. Another box ticked.
It was only a few months ago we were all depressed siting second last with one lucky win against the bottom team -most blamed the list saying it was full of holes, we had no youth, trade weitering, trade Cripps etc etc..... then we change the coach and instantly the switch is flicked - 6 wins in a row is not easy and rarely done by the best teams let alone a list full of holes yet there are still those that want to put a negative spin on everything as they can't let the Voss decision go.
We have a group of kids playing key defensive roles and doing an amazing job and are a lot more even across the ground. We no longer rely on the same 2 key forwards to kick a bag or Cripps to be superman. The goal spread is so refreshing and what the best teams have. I'm not suggesting our list is perfect or as strong and deep as the top teams but it is nowhere near in as bad a shape as many thought.
We should have Wilson and Bryne added to Jagga and Dean as rising stars nominations and Dean or Jagga should win it. Get Weitering fit, add Walker and maybe 1 or 2 FA and another 50 games to the kids and IMO the list will be healthy and stronger than its been in the last 2 decades.
Time to let the Voss stuff go as we have a lot to look forward to. ;)

The reality Shawny is that the form of the midfield group has directly equated to the team's result. Cripps et al. were awful during rounds 1 to 8 but have been dominant since then. And that worries me greatly going forwards because going forwards that's the group we need to re-vitalise. We can rely on George and Paddy to be competitive. Where I think we've greatly improved as a coaching group is there seems to be a preference to play blokes in their best positions, pick the right role players and in general far less cockamamie MC choices.

Gotta love what the club is showing and producing at present. No other club would be looking at us as easy beats... especially after half time!! Regaining respect, but still a way to go.
However...
We have yet to beat a very good side in good form, except for our inexplicable 'thing' over the Pussycats. We've maintained our strong contest and pressure... well embedded... kudos to Vossy. I love what Frase is doing, especially he and his coaching group's ability to keep strong contest and pressure and effectively introducing dare, risk, changing angles, playing kids and building other parts of the 'modern' game. However, I aint on the Frase Express yet. Still too early to call. We've passed some tests well, especially yesterday's good win over someone we should beat. Our performance against the Windy Dills was ordinary. But the real tests lie ahead. Will we back up yesterday's terrific win with an even better performance against the Tiggers? Then we will learn much more against the Dawks, Rottingwood, Brisvegas, the Aints, a better Dishlickers and D1ckers. They'll do their homework on the 'new Blues' which will tests us even further.
Really impressed with Frase's communication. I don't buy comments of 'simple' around his message. Nuh, anything would seem 'simple' after Vossy's word salads over the years. By comparison Frase seems more focussed on all the basics (and broader strategies), not just say... contest and pressure. And he seems to deliver his message, clearly and directly so the players would know exactly what is expected from them, as individuals and a team. That aint 'simple' that's a fundamentals focus which, when done right, builds iron foundations and beams stuff.
And the MC is now getting it right... no sentimental faves getting games with ordinary form! Blokes in the Magoos reallyhave to earnsenior selection - that's selection integrity. And Frase is getting much more from the on-field leaders. The contribution from our on-field leaders has been significantly impactful over the past six weeks. That's buy-in, but... early days. Still a long way to go, but loving what we're doing and how we're 'going for it!'

I was never particularly impressed with Voss as a match-day coach and I can't help wondering whether Fraser is simply better in this regard - with the benefit of watching the game from an elevated position, instead of from the bench.

Possibly. You would think though, that Fraser was probably performing that role while Voss was still the coach. I'm not 100% sure but wouldn't Fraser (or Hansen) have been up in the box relaying thoughts to Voss on the sidelines. The difference may be we've cut out the "middle man".

I'd love to know what Davies and Wright are thinking right about now.
If you search for it there was an interview with Davies just late last week, I think it was either SEN or Fox Footy, that had Davies basically ruling a line through Fraser stating he has some deficiencies and is not yet ready for senior coaching.
What's interesting to me is that this raises the question, why then is the current setup working? Is it on the players, or is a less autocratic model perhaps the real solution, a solution that most in the AFL can't accept?
We can't know, but I truly suspect Davies comments indicate that at the moment the weekly result is an unsustainable team effort, who'd have thunk it?
To me that's old world thinking, corporate mentality, the opposite of war, and it flies in the face of the concept that a champion team defeats a team of champions. The most effective unit in the military is the small independant unit SAS model, the opposite of Trump's war on Iran, smart and agile is better than overwhelmingly powerful.
AFL is war, break the game down into a set of small independant battles to win, and you are well on the way to victory in any circumstance!

I watched the replay this morning, we played well in moments but were too comfortable about it, like we could pick and choose when to go hard. It's a horrible mindset to have, it sets you up for failure on the biggest stage, we'll be the team who could have if we had chosen to!
Back in our glory days, the era of Dominator and Doull, we never let up, we went harder at it for longer than the opposition and set a standard that intimidated opposition. It become a meme in our 3rd quarters, and ear worm for the opposition that they could not escape. But make no mistake about it, it was driven by the likes of Dominator and Doull, who hit the playing surface every week wishing to obliterate the opponents, not just have a well-managed win.

I think the current setup is working because the players are less mentally burdened, and because Fraser the Amazer has taken 2.5-3 quarter good efforts and turned them into 3.5-4 quarter efforts. He deserves credit for that. However it's completely inaccurate to think that one individual (an inexperience caretaker coach no less) can take an entire organization from zero to hero in seven days, and keep it going for 6 weeks. There's no way that can be true. A football club is massive, with significant inertia and investment in training loads and methods, personnel, game style etc.
I still have my doubts about Wright and Davies.

That probably expresses what I was thinking a I was watching. It was like we knew we had their measure and just needed to tighten the screws every now and then to keep them in their place.
It one of the reasons I wouldn't be too perturbed if we had a 'down' match just to shock them back into the mindset to keep the pressure on.
As for Fraser....we need to play out the season. See how he responds in the tough games or losses that may still be ahead of us. If at the end he decides to put himself through the process both he and the club will have a much better idea if he really is our guy.
Don't take any notice of the 'not ready' comments either from the club or Fraser. In fact don't' take a lot of notice of any comments around the change. Everything is very vague..."we haven't changed a lot" "Simplified" seems to be a buzzword. I'm not even sure what that means.

Different game then - much more stop and start. These days there is relentless pressure of fatigue associated with the game style.

Everyone I have spoken to with connections to AFL clubs and in particular Coll and Haw, tell me Wright is a jet and knows what he is doing and his track record is proven. The fact he was hand picked and anointed by Cook is enough for me. I have no intel on Davies but from what I have seen and heard from him, he seems knowledgeable and impressive.

Great team effort - everyone contributed in some way - although I paid about scant attention after the long break.
Pleasing that we won every quarter and that when WC got to ~20 points in the third, we improved and fought back. Amazing what happens when there is confidence within the team.
Don't get too carried away - while you can only beat your opposition, it was only WC - although nice to have a 9 goal win.

Wright may have been a good list manager but he’s never been a CEO before. There’s also the matter of him walking away from Collingwood because he had issues with Kelly. That may well be a positive but he doesn’t have a track record as a CEO or long term football administrator. He may well be brilliant, and I hope he is, but the jury is still out.
I have a lot more faith in Davies who does have a proven track record as footy manager.

It's an interesting concept, and perhaps a lack of understanding about how stats work.
Technically, there is nothing stopping a team losing 75% of quarters but still winning more games than they lose, or inversely a team winning the majority of quarters and still losing more than they win like Carlton. Because the bare stat represents nothing in regard to magnitude, it measures a swing in direction, not the magnitude of the swing. Scrap over the line in a quarter by 1pt, is the same stat as winning a quarter by 10 goals.
A great comparison might be the Filth from a season or two back, when they scrapped over the line in the last quarter of more than half the wins they had.

He was the Head of Football at Hawthorn and General Manager of football at Collingwood when they won a flag...so he does have a little more to his resume than just List Manager.
But this is probably his biggest task. And will be the biggest feather in his cap if he can make Carlton a truly successful club again.
And Davies strikes me as the ideal "Luca Brasi".

Winning quarters is not something to hang your hat on... But what it does show is that a club may not be winning games but are competitive for large periods of games.
In our case before the change of coach it was being used to show that our problems weren't necessarily over a total game, and we played really good, sometimes dominating, football for large sections of our games.
Our issues were more about lapses and the inability to stem them, and then come back and recover leads we had given up.
1-8 may have been the results we were getting (and that's really all that counts in the big scheme of things) but our fate was usually determined by one bad quarter.
We lost to the Lions by less than 2 goals (but won the last two quarters) and Collingwood by less than a goal (won two of the quarters) Against Melbourne we dominated for the entire first half. (7-4 to 1-6) at half time.
There has been a significant change. These lapses in our game aren't occurring to the same extent and we seem to be able to stem them and consolidate.

The win/loss column just shows who is in front at the end of the game. The quarters won/lost columns show how competitive you are in the games.
People fixating on the first and neglecting the 2nd is a recipe for disaster.

Prof, I think its more than all this mostly on the bank of Cripps and Walsh over the last 6 weeks.
Personnel changes, confidence, gameplan tweaks, rapid improvement from our youth, more genuine options in the F50 and better use of the ball going inside 50, holding possession when no clear options and thank god there is no longer the default long bombs to contest - these are some of the reasons i see that are just as important as the midfield improvement.
I know its early days but we seem to be no where near as reliant on individuals as we were in the past. It was blinders from Cripps, Charlie, TDK or bust in previous years.
The winning run we are on this time is different.

Quarters won is a stat that can be interpreted a few ways but W/L stat is ultimately all that matters.
There are no cups in Trophy cabinet awarded for the amount of quarters won.
There isn't any trophies awarded for any amount of wins during the season either.
But if you want to successfully see how well you are going as a group, you want as much data as you can.
Taking your own logic....wins and losses is all that matters. Sure.
So 17 teams will have not won the flag at the end of the year. Do all 17 go on a rebuild? They are all losers. Wins and losses are all that matters. Everyone else lost.
No....they see how many wins/losses they have to help assess their year. Further to that, teams can see how many quarters won/lost to further assess their year.
As i said, ignoring that is a recipe for disaster. Just like focussing solely on winning the flag (or not) is a recipe for disaster too.

Personally, AFL 2026 style appears to be a war of attrition, 24 games, smaller lists, it's making it to finals hopefully in the Top 4 in the best possible condition. From there anything can happen, it is potentially more dynamic than the past.
It's only a couple of years back the Lions lost 7 or 8 of the first 9 games and won the flag, fans have a short memory!
This speaks nothing at all to the capabilities of the coach or the coaching group, but it does say something about the MC and Medical team. For me the coach panel must work with what they have got, fit or otherwise, it's the medical team and the MC to manage the list through the season to get it to the pointy end in the best possible state.

We missed 6 or 7 pretty simple shots, and could have won by 80......

No.
1. Reid would cost more than the picks we have. 2. Throw Cripps in there instead, and the answer is yes. Swap of #9s
It was the Cripps/ Reid contest last week that triggered the question. They went hard at each other but seemed to be enjoying the struggle when one got a win over the other. Imagine them together for a couple of years. ;) :D

That would be the easier way with a Cripps trade to WC a much easier trade to engineer... Reid was a passionate Cats supporter as a kid and Id have them favourites to land him if he came back to Victoria based around what seems to be happening with Butters to the Dogs rumours.
