Great win, average footy.
A very good weekend for the club. All four teams won. Great effort by all the gals and guys.

Scrappy game by two average teams but at least we got the win. Same old issues and we still have much work to do. Enjoy the wins when we can though. 😁

Always nice to win but what about wanting it bad enough rather than just doing enough, get ahead then take the foot off the throat. Could have won by near anything we wanted but "chose" not to.
Where is that real fanatical desire we had in 5 of the first 6 weeks. The high pressure, the team defence. Not there the last 4 weeks. Shouldn't complain about 8-2 but I have...lol. 9 wins equals last year.

A wins a win. It was ugly, especially scoring (12 behinds) and sometimes the intent to attack the footy seemed off. Onto next week I guess.

Jim imo our goal kicking is a major factor in our struggles. We are putting ourselves under the pump and are unable to get the buffer that allows us to play more fluent footy. We fight for survival rather than consolidating victories.

I have never seen our kicking at goal so poor. There must be someone who can kick straight. Last week was one week it really cost us badly. We have patches against the Pies where we were right on top but kicking at goal stifled us. Then they go down the other end kick one out of the @rse and our head would drop again. Their 14.6 made our kicking look even worse.

It's sort of the way of modern AFL, the balance between having a crack and execution seems to have gone out the window.
Every game seems like a roll of the dice!
Couple of good things for me, Derksen and Young greatly improved, they now offer genuine KPP support, Byrne starting to look comfortable at AFL level.
Lord, Akers or Cotters might struggle to keep a spot, could be time to give one of the Campo's a run. As great as Akers is at winning a contest, his disposal and some of his decisions are equally bad, he must be a real point of contention for the MC.

Yes, this giggly forward handball, play-on-at-the-speed-of light-footy can get pretty ugly IMO.
Acres would have the coaches singing his praises out of one side of their mouths and hissing disparaging abuse out the other. The most frustrating player on our list IMO.

To me he's a player that has performance inverse of the available time and space, the more time he has the more ways he finds to trip over his own foot.
I think he needs the old "Stop thinking, just do something!"
Taking the first option could be a good start.

Frustrating game to watch as skills by both teams was average at best and our kicking for goal was crap again. Should have won by 5-6 goals imo.
Positives are the kids. Byrne jagga Dersken dean wilson all played big roles.
Weitering loss is massive but win the amount of games we have with such a young defence can only fast track their development and is great for the future.
8-2 is an amazing effort considering the position the group was in and a winning culture is good culture regardless if the team played to their peak or not so im happy.
Surely kemp doesnt get another game off that display. Hes confidence is shot and has become a momentum and moral killer.
Give one of the key kids another run.

The trend of beating poor teams continues.
GC were very poor, despite being good in front of goal.
Kemp not only has the yips in front of goal, he is scared to even have a ping at them. At least twice he passed to people in worst positions than him, just so he didn't have to shoulder the responsibility of taking a shot himself. Someone needs to get him a shrink, quick.
Lewis Young looked better in the air than Harry does.....maybe it was the opposition?
Talor Byrne continues to make the extra step which results in laying the tackle, rather than just touching an opponent....and is getting rewarded.
I can't recall how many free kicks we got for holding the ball today, but i'd suggest its our season high.....and there was still a couple that they missed.
Harry Dean is playing with the experience of a 100 gamer. He'll be telling Weitering what to do if he ever returns. Exceeded all expectations. Today wasn't his best game either, but his opponent is about the toughest he'll ever face, so you take that.
Jagga can not touch the ball between now and the end of the year and still win the rising star. His poise and balance is elite. He'll win a brownlow someday. IMO, he's aready overtaken Walsh in the midfield heirarchy. Jagga had equal most touches on the ground, and 2nd best disposal efficiency of the 46 players, despite having the 2nd most contested possessions in navy blue (behind Cripps of course)......and its effectively, his first year!
The young kids won us the game today IMO.

Interesting to watch the coaches, often you get a better understanding of your team's performance from the opposition coach. Dimma said it was a very high inside pressure contest, so a bit ugly on the outside with Carlton just better for longer.

Absolutely. 12 - 14 score involvements (depending on whose stats you believe), 3 goals and some great run down tackles. You couldn't want much more from a youngster (except for maybe kicking straighter all the time).
Actually, our kids were very good today. Cowan was excellent with 10 marks, most of them intercepts. Byrne we've mentioned. Billy Wilson was again good (even if he did have a couple of iffy kicks). Lord was well below his best, but he did manage 23 possessions. He'll be a lot better next year with a proper pre-season and no injury/illness worries. Harry Dean was probably beaten on the day, but that didn't mean he wasn't significant.

When it comes to raw talent, Gold Coast had so much more than us that it wasn't funny. But they play soulless, bruise-free football. We had 52 tackles to their 34, and that was much improved compared to their first half. They don't put that much pressure on; we made the mistake and they scored from turnovers, but they didn't make us make mistakes; we did that to ourselves. Nobody tackles like Talor Byrne, who ran down guys and got some reward for a change. Similar with Frankie Evans: he didn't have a huge day, but his tackles and chases got us the ball and got us goals. We had 14 tackles inside 50, they had 2.
Pitto had maybe half the taps that Moyle had, but who won the clearances? It wasn't them, even with 4 top mids available. Patrick Cripps didn't have a humungous game, but he had 30 possessions, 8 centre clearances, 5 tackles, 15 clearances in total and 8 score involvements. When we won 22 taps to 37, with 5 to advantage compared to 13. We won the clearances 39 to 28! Granted that Pitto makes it harder to get perfect taps, which we missed badly the last 2 weeks, but the numbers in their favour suggest they should have killed us in the middle. They did, for maybe 15 minutes in the whole game.
We outmarked Gold Coast: we had 133 marks compared to 77. We had 11 contested marks to 5! And we barely had a tall on the ground! In perfect conditions.
We even won the free kicks because we tackled with purpose. We got goals because of our pressure and more holding the balls than we've had in any 2 games this season, because we put body pressure on. That was really good!
Touk Miller used to kill us by stopping our mids and getting it himself. He had 19 possessions, but didn't hurt us at all. Instead, our mids were among our best. We kept Noah Anderson to 8 possessions after half time. He is their captain and he didn't have a single tackle! The only Gold Coast mid who had reasonable tackle numbers was Rowell, who was their best mid by some margin. But he wasn't as effective as Cripps. Or Walsh. Or Jagga Smith, who went at 92% disposal efficiency!

I thought we hit more targets, the main reason for the differential.
I had to laugh when GC burst off the HBF, and kicked it to Dean standing in the middle of four opponents, it was like watching us!

Leaving aside the average skills just for the moment, the numbers are very strongly in our favour. Way more tackles (including 14v2 tackles I50), more marks, more uncontested possessions, more CP, more clearances, much better efficiency I50, more handballs, more kicks. On paper, it's a great effort.

The ruck as expected is a worry. My biggest gripe with Pitto is his ability to get up and down the ground and do damage defensively or in attack. When you watch a Cameron or Gawn, they work up and down the ground and defensively especially either spoil or intercept mark. There was one instance early where Pitto was there as the GC ball came in but he refused to go and create a contest. The GC player floated in from the side, marked and kicked a goal. Why he didnt engage is beyond me.

There is some vision floating around that shows Lombard clashing with Pertracca over a piece of play. Basically telling him to F*Off after Petracca criticised some effort. Not a group of happy campers.

Nick Austin take a bow again.... Pick 45 is 'burning it up!' About time we found a diamond in the back end of the draft, and Austin did it.
Never had an issue with the individuals he picked.......but any danger you could get a balanced list together?
Meanwhile we have Kemp up forward who is too scared to take a shot at goal......and Young who we've shopped around but nobody wanted. Doesn't fill you with confidence in that area now does it.

Poor old Lewis Young could play like Kouta in the last quarter of the 99 Preliminary Final and he'd still cop it. Played all over the ground, 18 possessions, 6 score involvements, a couple of clearances and almost 200 m gained..... almost identical to Mac Andrews who was considered on of the Sun's best and was on the ground 20% longer than Young. Probably need to ask his team mates how they rate his performance based on the role he was given which might be more valid than us in the bleachers.

Derksen and Young greatly improved, they now offer genuine KPP support,
Derksen is improving with each game but I would still like to see what he has to offer as a forward.
Possibly the least tentative game I have seen from Young. He is very limited as a ruckman but he seems to offer a better forward marking target and a more competitive option as a defender, due to his height, than either McGovern or Kemp.

He has talent but is an unreliable marking target against a good defender. I would try him on a wing; I think he has the ball skills and mobility and would be much harder to defend with room to move.

I thought Kemp played ok deeper up the ground and is still creating opportunities but his confidence in kicking for goal is completely shot. His mobility is impressive but I wonder if he needs to concentrate on doing the basics better and less of the flashy low percentage stuff.
I thought we still have some passengers - usual suspects like Cerra was noticeably a step off everything again and contributed nothing.

The most disappointing thing today was Newey pinging his hammy at the start of the game. That’s not how his 150th game should have panned out.
We really should have smashed Gold Coast but our aggressive ball movement and unerring ability to pinpoint their players by foot kept them in the game.
We had over 100 more disposals and the only stats we lost were hitouts and clangers (we had fewer).
Lewis Young played with a confidence I haven’t really seen before and his ability to play forward, back and in the ruck was invaluable.
It’s probably unfair to single out a couple of players but Billy Wilson has shown that he is just what we needed as a running defender, Byrner and Frankie are enabling us to lock the ball inside 50 and hit the scoreboard, and Harry Dean has met the high expectations that were placed on him.
I’m not sure what to think about Gold Coast. On paper, they are much stronger than how they’re playing; a bit like us earlier this season 🤔

Kemp was the ultimate passenger I thought. On a day where youre playing under a roof and the team scores 100+ pts and one of your key fwds returns 0.1, thats a very very bad day in my book.

I didn't really go into watching this game believing we should win by a lot due to GCSunsets losing so many on the trot. Recently they only narrowly went down to Rottingwood, Dishlickers and Dawks. And the talent they have on the paddock is bordering on elite.
Positives: Headed a number of times and wrestled back the lead. And we were in front when the final siren sounded. Kids - The Burner, Cow, Deano, Jags and Willo. Young - Whipping boy for some but played with confidence and filled his role(s) well. Newbies - Ainsworth, Florent & Hayward. And The Derk well worth persevering with, there's something there.
Concerns: Kempies goal kicking confidence. I still believe he should be given time in the middle as when the aggott hits the deck he hunts it so well. Did a lot of really good stuff at ground level up forward. Newey's hammy. Lapses. Obviously a work in progress.
Notice to the Carlton Shop: Load up on 3s and 9s. The Byner is a fave of we fans. Must get a Rising Star nomination before the year is out.

Yes, Kemp's kicking for goal is cause for concern but I think that he does a lot of team first work that goes unnoticed by supporters.
He had his work cut out playing on Collins and Andrew with only McGovern for support ... and occasional cameos by Young, Pitto and Crippa. Collins and Andrew were able to nullify his main strength - marking - but he still contributed with tackles, shepherds and smart ball use; two goal assists and five score involvements is a reasonable return for a key forward who was well held on the day.
It seemed to me that Fraser planned for our small amd medium forwards to be the main offensive threat with Kemp and McGovern focusing on applying pressure and creating opportunities for them - and that worked well. Of course, McGovern made the most of his opportunities but Kemp couldn't nail what should have been a monty.
Apparently Kemp was practising his kicking for goal before the game with the club pastor, Rev Stephen Webster, so divine intervention's not the answer.

Dean looking a bit tired I reckon.
Haynes was very good as that sweeping/interceptor type. Reads the play beautifully and I'd consider giving him another year.
Young looks the ideal bench spare parts player if he brings that every week.

Nice summation Ol' Boy. Chapeau.

Every time I see Kemp behind the ball, he is effective. Time to see if he can play on a wing as I feel he could make an impact there. Our defense is building so no need for him there, and I don't think he is suited for a forward role. Last chance or he will need to get given his marching orders after contract runs out.

Kemp is a good utility player being asked to perform a role he has performed for approximately less than 15 games at AFL level and is currently doing a pretty good job of it, with some warts on his game.
Give him some time to sort those out. He is a reliable enough kick, its possibly the first time in his career he has a monkey on his back. The fans jumping on him for lack of finishing wont help him, there is no reason he cant be our Jack Gunston.

Yes, Kemp's forward craft is good; he is an excellent mark, he stays in the contest when the pill hits the ground, his running patterns are good, he sticks his tackles and he plays a team first brand of footy that complements the likes of Byrner, Frankie, Wilbur and Gov. The only real flaw is his goal kicking and that is at odds with his field kicking.
I think that you have to give him more time to sort out his set shot routine and action and, hopefully, regain his confidence.

I am serious, and dont call me shirley... :D
Keep in mind he ruptured his achilles and only played 5 games as a key forward last year and even when he played last year, he did it with others as number 1 banana. This year he has had Harry as his foil for most of the year.

To say he is an excellent mark overlooks the fact that he frequently drops (virtually uncontested) marks that he should take - possibly because he is thinking about what he is going to do before completing the mark. He has a good leap but, unfortunately he is often outnumbered and/or opposed by the opposition's best defender and/or his teammates fail to deliver the ball to his advantage.
If he ever gets a chance to line up in a more advantageous position or in front of teammates who can deliver the ball to his advantage, I suspect he can become a very successful (2nd or 3rd) key forward or, at least, an effective midfielder or half forward.

As great as Akers is at winning a contest, his disposal and some of his decisions are equally bad, he must be a real point of contention for the MC. [/quote]
Agree LP, Acres spot in the team needs to be looked at. Again i though he looked very lazy with his efforts and disposal.

I want what ya'll are smoking. He's the weakest link in our forward line. He's serviceable when defending by a mile at the moment. I wonder who would come knocking if we put him up for trade. Donuts I reckon.

Sadly, we keep 'giving away' players because we think they won't work in our team, and they become solid contributors for other sides.....
M.Kennedy J.Martin Durdin Stocker Holman
I am therefore very loathe to consign Brodie Kemp to the scrap heap.
He has now played 67 games, only 25 or so of those as a forward. He has regularly been the lone marking target in the F50 during that time with big absences from Curnow and McKay last year, so he has often drawn the best defender. Tough way to learn the craft as a mid-sized forward.
Once he finally gets his shot as the third banana (which is about where his size demands he should play), I think you might find he will become very dangerous. Of course, we need to recruit another first or second banana at the end of the season......
Personally, I think he should play a little further up the ground so that we don't have a half-forward line of midgets every week. He could be very useful as the lead-up half-forward. He's got good hands and is actually a pretty good field kick - it's the sticks that paralyse him right now.
If we sacked every player who developed the yips in front of goal, we wouldn't have many left. Even our superstar captain hasn't got that bit right.

Out of those mentioned players, you could argue that Durdin is the only player that has performed better after leaving Carlton. Holman is a stretch but the rest have not. No need keeping players longer than necessary that won't improve the team. All subjective of course but hey, it's an opinion.

Still a relatively inexperienced player with much more upside than otherwise, IMO. I reckon the team has let him down, rather than vice versa.

153 is getting to be alot of games. No matter how weak the side is you're playing that many games unless you are doing something right. In weak outfit they keeping turning over ordinary players to get better. He played most games last year to when they were a good side.

Agreed.
Plenty of time for him to turn things around.
That doesn't mean he needs to play 1's every week until he does. This kind of form is exactly why you drop players to the 2's to regain some confidence. Problem is, we don't have anyone to bring in. Closest you could argue is Ison, and we already dropped him for similar reasons.
Kemp is a good player to have in your 23. Traditional utility player. We just can't plan for him to be our FF for the next 7 years.

Some fans once they like a player prefer to keep doubling down then admit they may have got it wrong. i thought SPS was the next andrew mccloed and kept seeing all the positives and glossing over the negatives until i conceded i got it wrong but i gave him a heap more time then i usually would because i thought i saw something with him.
Kemp is no gunston and couldnt be further from him. Gunston even in his early days was a good user and decision maker. He took his opportunites. Kemp appears to be another mentally fragile player and generally those players never become consistent top level performers.

Kemp just needs continuity. A ruptured achilles is no joke. His Kicking is likely suffering as a result. He did it on his preferred side.
Likely just needs to continue doing what he is doing. Early in the year he was generally better, but he has lost a bit of depth in it, indicating that fatigue is likely more of an issue.

Mckay is scared of his own shadow. Gehrig was a absolute brute who if you got in his way when on the lead he would send you into the 4th row.
