Title: VFL Rd 21 2026 Carlton vs Footscray at Footscray
Post by: crashlander on August 13, 2026, 09:27:50 pm
We really need to win this, as our fate is no longer in our hands. We need teams above us to lose, but if we screw up, we've no chance.
Game is on Sunday morning at Footscray at 10:35.
We will have 3 rucks, while the Dogs are struggling in that area: we've got to make this a structural win!
No Zac Williams: his larynx is kaput. And I read elsewhere that St, Kilda are courting him! Not the way to convince a player to play for you! No Camporeale: a dislocated shoulder should keep him out. We've been down in the midfield of late and need to win this. Will Hogg return? He has been an inside mid this season. We need Darcy Tucker to play, as he can do that role. Matt Duffy? He is headed back to Ireland next week. Will he get a final game? I'm disappointed that he didn't work out, but we just haven't seen the run and carry he had in Gaelic footy. We really need a key target. Not sure who can do that job! I'd play Farrar, as he does kick goals. But we still have real issues in the key position player area.

Our line-up:
B: 28 Harry Charleson 61 Dane Harvey 37 Jordan Boyd HB: 58 Jack Sammartino 33 Lewis Young 42 Adam Saad C: 21 Lucas Camporeale 50 Darcy Tucker 62 Oliver Warburton HF: 45 Flynn Young 8 Lachie Fogarty 30 Jack Ison F: 43 Ashton Moir 40 Hudson O'Keeffe 74 Logan Prout R: 25 Liam Reidy 16 Ben Camporeale 4 Oliver Hollands Int: 75 Liam Farrar 76 Cody Walker 60 Will Reinhold 63 Ryder Corrigan 80 Thomas Howard 66 Sam Paea 57 Alwyn Davey 65 Jed Rule 68 Taj Logan 77 Will Cookson 72 Charlie Cotter
[1] 13 listed players, with at least one almost certain not to play (AFL Emergency): not the best outcome for us, but we've had quite a few injuries recently, with none of them coming back.
[2] We're only playing 2 rucks this week, with Riley getting the rest. It doesn't improve our overall structure. Reidy does like slaughtering 2nd string rucks, but we don't always get midfield dominance from it.
[3] I'm surprised to see ben Camporeale named, but it does improve our midfield significantly. We really need a few of our mids to stand up, especially after last week, If we lose, we're done.
[4] This time last year the Dogs murdered us. The previous year, in a similar position, we were thrashed by over 100 points by Southport. We have a very poor record in last H&A games, which we really need to do something about.
[5] Cody played op a wing last week, I hope he plays some inside mid minutes this week. He showed he can really lift our clearances.
[6] We have developed quite a decent VFL cohort this year. I hope they can stand up one more time. Then they can enjoy a finals campaign for the first time in years.

Results not going our way so far, but there is a long way to go yet.
Two teams above us have lost so far, but we still have to win.

Great goal on the run by Charleson. One of the more confusing aspects of this season is why this player hasn't had a run at senior level.

Cody Walker is having a quiet game. Only three touches to this stage.
Margin is back to 15.

Will we ever get to watch a broadcast with some Carlton supporting callers?
It's frustrating enough being a Storm supporter watching the NRL, but to have almost zero media support in an AFL home state is horrendous!

Ollie asked at games end about leaving and didnt do a great job of refuting it imo.
You'd have to assume the way we've handle his brother will play a big part of what he decides to do.
His brother is finished at Carlton, Elijah knows it, Ollie knows it. He'll be deciding based on that now not at years end. An offer has been put to him, its been rejected and has been told to find a better offer elsewhere hence touring facilities.

He doesnt need to refute anything, a fresh start is perhaps what he needs. No issues with that for mine.
No of course not me either

Yep He was pretty solid today. He's not showing signs of slackening off. If he chooses to go, there are probably not too many who would begrudge him that opportunity especially if another club is giving him bit more security.

I’m not sure what else the Club could’ve done with Elijah. So far as I can tell, they worked hard and wore a lot of heat to shield Elijah from further harm.

Haven't seen a minute of the game yet, but I did follow the stats. I will enjoy looking at the replay more than I will looking at the seniors, that is for certain.
[1] The Dogs had the top few possession getters for most of the day, but our guys came home with a wet sail. Lucas Camporeale: 32 possessions to get us into the finals. Not bad. 12 marks, 3 tackles and 3 clearances, which hasn't been a significant part of his game. Ollie Hollands: 31 possessions, 7 tackles and 6 clearances. And he managed a goal. If he leaves I will be disappointed. But it sounds like it is up to him. Darcy Tucker: 28 possessions, 4 tackles and 5 clearances. We needed leadership and someone to play inside and Tucker was there. We might not have lost as many games if he'd be fit for more of the season. Certainly, he stood up when Darcy Hogg was unavailable. Lachie Fogarty: 25 possessions, 7 tackles, 5 clearances. He barely touched it in the first half, but came home look a missile. Probably playing some of his best football, but our midfield and half forward line have moved past him. I don't expect to see him with us next year, but he would be good leader for the VFL side.
[2] Reidy probably ended up ahead, even thought he had a couple of taps left. He managed 14 possessions and 7 clearances. But he took only 1 mark. Not sure what his future is either, but he needs to get stronger if he to improve. Hudson O'Keefe kicked 3 goals from 9 possessions, and got a few taps as well. Not sure where he is headed either.
[3] Our VFL boys keep contributing. I've already mentioned Tucker. Taj Logan popped up this week with 22 possessions and 4 clearances. Not bad. Prout, Sammartino and Warburton weren't as prolific, but they played their part. And I must mention Dane Harvey, who has held down a key defensive post for most of the season. We lack key position types badly, but Harvey has really filled in a serious gap in our list. He had an ordinary patch midseason, when we were losing, but he has been a real positive this season. Particularly today, when we had no Lewis Young and no Matt Duffy, who has also filled in that role. Also no Sam Paea today.

O'Keefe's 3 goals all came in the first quarter. He had little impact after that.

So, if Wil Hayward isn't available for Saturday's game against the D1ckers, who from that side comes into the seniors? Ison? Flynn Y?

I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't manage a few players and both may get a game against Freo. It will depend on whether we want to play Adelaide in Adelaide or have a crack at Collingwood in Melbourne by bating Freo

In a final I'd actually prefer Adelaide to Collingwood, even over there. Crows have been shown to be brittle on those occasions, losing 2 finals at home last year in straight sets, Collingwood, on the other hand, tough as teak and rise to these occasion big time. Wonder if we'll rest a few and the like of Ben Campo, Charleson, for example, get a run in a dead rubber. VFL are playing a Wildcard this weekend but the AFL prep comes first.
