A fantastic, gutsy effort against very good opposition. Well done to all players and coaches.
IMO (and this is a separate issue), the AFL's desire for supersonic footy is making the game unwatchable. The skills errors in this game were appalling.

I agree, on average it's ordinary, when it's done well it's electric.
We sort of judge the style based on outcome, convert a few of those late behinds it would have swayed fan opinion, because we failed to finish a lot of good work it loses some gloss, but I feel we were quite dominant all game, even when we were four goals down I said as much to @Thryleon in the coaches thread.
Some of the gloss comes off because of umpiring variability, but it must be very difficult to umpire the chaos. We've talked about in danger, was any paid tonight, and how many times did players run with the footy get caught and not penalised, it's inconsistent at best and that inconsistency can determine the outcome.

Pitto terrific again, by the end of the game he had Gawn covered and was doing his solo clearance trick. Just needs to clunk a few more marks and he'd be in the votes.

Yes, I certainly don't wish to detract from what is a remarkable achievement by the boys, and the skills were certainly better earlier in the game. But the AFL can't have it both ways, or at least they shouldn't. You cannot be very concerned about concussion, contact injuries etc., yet insist that players run themselves into the ground.

Bad start, terrible skills early, but what a finish. Walsh, Jagga, Weiters, Pitto take a bow.

Bad becasue of skills not because we were outplayed, we must always look at the game on it's merit and not focus on the outcome, I thought we had more footy than the Dees despite not finishing.

Just as well Pickett was busy being a show pony - flying for big marks and trying to kick goals whenever he was inside the 50 metre arc - we might have been behind at 3/4 time if he had managed to kick some of the goals
Hollands earned his place today and will be hard to displace next week.
Best game from Cottrell for many a moon - shame he kept narrowly missing the goals.
Young did his job but could still be omitted for Derksen next week - Wonder if Hayward and/or Newman might be available next week.

Aggressive kicks to the corridor that weren't working, not necessary and were getting chopped off every time. They changed tact and it worked.

oh, we've done it before. I can recall one game last year when we managed 6 posters, but (thankfully) they don't happen often. Cottrell should have 5 goals, but ... Still, a win is a win is a win. I'll take it. We move on to next week.

I read a bit on another site that kind of sums up our position. "We're playing with house money"
We are here against all the odds, and it's a "no real cost" situation if it ends sometime in the next few weeks. We're in a good position with some of the best youth in the land and we can look forward to next season with some positive expectations...unlike last year where we were facing a player exodus.
One of the features of the way we're playing is that even if a player isn't having the best of games they're just about all having important moments. Evans get's five goals last week and gets none this week, but he does make eight tackles-including some really important ball winning ones.
Only the most optimistic of us would see us going all the way this year, but it's not over until it's over. It really is a case of 'one week at a time'. Next week...a six day break a rested Geelong, but a team we match up well against. Not out of the question.

Everyone played a role I reckon. Ollie H's workrate was outstanding. Lewis and Pitto gave Gawn a very hard time, I think Lord ran with Kosi for the most part and kept him subdued. Everyone chipped in when needed. The importance of Haynes was on show, Weiters, Dean and Haynes were formidable last night. A good team effort to turn a 20 deficit into a 19 pt win.

To nullify the best ruckman in the land is a great achievement, Gawn was outstanding last week. Pitto is our most important player and has been for some time. Gawn wasn"t clunking marks either which he usually always does. Melbourne were always looking for Gawn to take a mark at the kickins and we stopped that entirely and they were lost to get the ball out of there backline.
We're a beautiful team to watch at the moment. Its not only the players, the line coaches and specialist coaches are working in cinc . It makes me wonder how we had all this hidden talent ready to go with Fraser being the catalyst. I would love to know the thoughts of the exodist players from last year. They did us a favor by effin off and that includes TDK because he has allowed Pitto to be our number 1 ruck. Nothing flash about Pitto but he's a smart boy.

Well that was just bloody delicious.
No matter what the Go Dees threw at us we had the answers, and then some. No fear of making mistakes, total respect for the opposition's best and everyone knowing their roles - no reliance of superstars.
Cudos to Ollie H and Weiters for returning to the seniors and adapting and adjusting to a slightly different approach.
Deano aint no one-dimensional defender, yep does the spoils and other defensive things so well but remains engaged and seeks to be an offensive option as well... similar to his old man.
Not over-awed by champs like Gawn and Kozzi... Or a scoreboard deficit.
Hold Frankie and The Byrner goalless... doesn't matter... Ainsworth pops up for 3 and mids chime in, too (not necessarily with goals but involve themselves in creating goal opportunities). Even when our small forwards are held goalless, they create opportunities for others. Bravo. And when I mention mids, that includes Pitto.
Now for a completely different opponent with their own set of challenges. Bring on the Pussycats.

Not the prettiest match to watch, we fumbled really badly early too.
It was great to get the win but given a lot of our players were playing their first ever final, I do think we will be better for the run next week as a result.
Geelong are beatable, but we can't serve up the same crap we did in the first quarter against them.
I was sending texts around during the match questioning our desperation & want to chase & pressure. Finals are a different beast and you will get found out very quickly if you don't play with a reckless & uncompromising assault on the contest.
There was a lot to like last night but equally, there is still some tinkering to be done if we want to go a little further in this finals series.
I particularly liked Lord's role on Pickett as he was the one who could have sparked the Dees back into the match. Thing is, Pickett got more & more frustrated with the hard tag Lord gave him so he tried to do the mercurial highlight reel stuff which he fluffed badly & played into our hands.

Being able to change tact when it wasnt working is another major difference in the Frazer era and made me feel confident even when things werent on our terms we would prevail.
No cripps no Carlton era is officially over
Weitering when fit is the best defender in the comp and all the trading talk now looks like absolute nonsense. Was a road block for them and his intercepting defending along with Dean is first rate. So confortable with out back 6 for the next 5 plus years.
Austin using the number of pick swaps to get Jagga was questioned at the time but thank god we have this little champ in our club. Has swagga, poise and is calm decision making in the biggest games and in congestion. Sign him up for 10 years.
Walsh is an absolute machine and his gut running when the game was on the line was inspiring stuff.
And dean omg - has there been a key position back ever player a season like his in year one. WTF. this bloke is an absolute star. backs himself in woth his sure hands and then his spot up kicking is elite.
And special mention to the new imports in Ainsworth and Florent again played important roles along with our defensive forwards who made the crowd erupt with from behind run down tackles. Lord role on Pickett was great and Pitto as usual gave his all against an all time great.
Really missed Haywood so if he comes in and we got thru unscathed we will be every chance to continue the run next week.
Go Blues.

Excellent all round effort by the boys to incrementally and systematically contain Melb. Very professionally done. Loved Pitto’s effort in eventually nullifying Gawn who looked spent to me as the 2H unfolded and also a great effort by Lord in largely nullifying Kosie. We are becoming a very professional outfit. Loved it!!

I thought Ollie was given a game last week as a window dressing exercise for the trade period then we got to see last night what he brings. He had Langford gassed during the first half trying to keep up then kept going and going and not doing his turnovers. He's coming into his prime now so we'll keep him thanks.

One feature of the team's improved performance after the coaching change seems to be the willingness and commitment to forwards selflessly kicking the ball back into the corridor within the forward 50 arc to set up better goal-scoring opportunities - just as well as the forwards still miss goals that they should kick.

I don't think its limited to forward 50.
Overall we are lowering the eyes and finding shorter targets and kicking the long bombs less.
I just checked to get some evidence of this and surprised myself.
R1-9 - long kicks (6th in AFL) R10+ - Long kicks (18th in afl)
R1-9 - Short kicks (13th in AFL) R10+ - Short kicks (1st in afl)
We couldn't kick to save ourselves early on which in part contributed to the long bombs, especially under pressure. Since then, with confidence growing, we are taking more 'risky' kicks and its coming off, leading to more short kick chains of possessions.

Went to the game. Wasn't great in terms of skills, but we stuck the process and found a way to win. We problem solve during the game and we appear fitter than previous years. Just need to finish off the good work up forward, thats one of the missing pieces. I felt calm in the last quarter, didn't feel like we were losing this one. Bring on the cats

Young Jagga might be in his first actual season of AFL footy but he's not backward when it comes to sledging opponents.
When Jake Bowey tried to rough up Jagga, he responded by asking, "Who are you?"
You can do that when you're well on the way to racking up 29 disposals, 10 clearances and two goals :)

I agree. A very good example of winning ugly. Being able to win in different ways is good, but I would suggest that winning off the back of so many basic skill errors (dropped marks, missed kicks, missed handballs etc) is not sustainable.

It was a step up in pressure so not surprised by the skill level, we adjusted well after half time and were more composed, should have won by more in the end.

I think we're all at different stages of belief at the moment in terms of how far we can go in the current season.
The way I look at it is, any wins from this point on are a bonus. In fact any wins from the end of the home and away are a bonus. While the 'ride' is still going let's just enjoy it If it does come to an end at some stage in the next few weeks then hopefully we go down fighting but in any event 2026 has given us a lot to be pleased about... We've seen the development of some really good young players and some of our older guys have recaptured some previous good form and enthusiasm. As Fraser keeps saying though, we're not the finished product, and there are still things we need to work on.

Carlton played 5 of the other top 11 teams twice, we played six games interstate and four of the of the non Victorian top six teams away. We also dropped three games when we were in match winning positions. Are we lucky to be in the finals? Luck is how you see it. Except for the first 15 minutes of the game we dominated. Melbourne were going at 100mph and were making skill errors. I watched the replay and listened to the commentators and they all said to stop doing what we have been doing over the past three months and revert to type. However, Carlton continued to play the game the way we wanted and it turned around. The definition of an expert is, X is an unknown quantity and spurt is a drip under pressure. Footy experts are big drips under pressure of a dubious quantity and quality. I don't understand the ruck rules. I think the umpires guess. Pittonet putting Gawn on his backside at the first bounce wasn't a free imo, but it did send a message. Ruck domination is more about having a physical presence and less about stats. Pittonet won the ruck battle because Gawn didn't. Melbourne are very dependent on Gawn and Pickett to win their games and we really subdued them both. O.Hollands is supposedly leaving but gee he is playing with commitment. I was concerned about our tackling a few weeks ago but it has ratcheted up, now we just need to improve our goal kicking. We must be a good chance against Geelong next week.

I thought that both coaches spoke very well in their pressers. Minimal cliches, no excuses or whinging and good, honest appraisals of their team's performance.
I know that Pitto would have us believe that it's because they're ruckmen, but how refreshing is it compared to what the Scotts, Lyon, Hardwick and Kingsley serve up?

Cut throat finals are pressure packed and skills are not as easy to execute in the biggest games.
The best in the comp struggle in finals. nick dacios was under 60% effective disposals in their final

I agree it was a really weird game to be at and watch and we were very nervous in the first mostly across the board. Difference for me is I felt confident they would settle and win - but for a myriad of just misses/hit posts, we wouldve won by 6-8 goals! Even when it was teetering it felt like we would win not capitulate, and we didnt.
So sure, skills were lacking at times but our push forward and execution and commitment was a different Carlton outfit to the one from months ago. Just feel… more composed.

I thought despite being behind in the first, we looked like the better team. They couldn't miss, we couldn't kick straight.
I think there was a part in the second/third when they clearly looked better and we managed to ride it out without issue. From there i think we had it in the bag.

Agree, I was at the game and always felt we were in it up to our eyeballs, even during their 1st quarter onslaught. We controlled the majority of the game even though we never really put them away.

I thought that we were the better team for the whole game. Both teams were a little fumbly and tangle-footed in the first quarter and I don't know whether that was the occasion or the conditions, but both teams settled down fairly quickly. Melbourne worked really hard to disrupt our short-kicking, possession game and we played into their hands with a couple of poorly-executed kicks and by taking some overly-ambitious options. Gawn rucking for the entire first quarter gave them an edge when Pitto was off, but that came back to bite them on the butt later in the game. Our actual and perceived pressure was excellent and, although Melbourne laid more tackles, ours were often at critical moments, seemed heavier, and yielded vital free kicks. Melbourne did have a crack in the third quarter but I thought that we rode it out quite comfortably and always looked confident.
Melbourne missed some easy goals, and our defence saved several more, but we really should have had a few more goals on the board; five posters :o Our ball use and pressure inside 50 has been a feature of the second half of the season and it was outstanding last night.
While I'm at it, some of our lesser lights or "bottom six" players made excellent contributions to complement the work of our guns. I'm talking about Cerra, Cottrell, Lord, Wilson, Acres, Hollands, McGovern, Young and Evans. Byrner had a quiet game but still played a role in our forward pressure and team defence.

Seriously, over multiple interviews he seemed absolutely thrilled with the result and the performance of some of the youngsters, especially Dean. Even saw him having a deep and meaningful with Young. Didn't look like someone the least bit interested in moving to another club.

I reckon he along with Cripps and Walsh are loving the fact that they no longer are carrying the burden of the teams fortunes alone. The youngsters that have stepped up along with the new recruits have reinvigorated the rest.

Talk of Weitering wanting a trade, the club wanting to trade him and/or his alleged demoralising presence in our backline is just baseless "supporter" speculation.
Weitering hates losing games and one-on-one contests but he has never been one to hide his emotions when we win or when one of his teammates does well.

Graeme Atkinson published a book in 1982 called Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Australian Rules Football But Couldn't Be Bothered Asking. It's certainly well out of date, but has the following records. I can't vouch for its accuracy :
Most posters by a team : 11 Footscray 6, Carlton 5 (1936) 10 Richmond 7, Fitzroy 3 (1924) 10 Collingwood 4, Melbourne 6 (1937) 9 Sth Melb 8, Geelong 1 (1920)
Most posters by Individuals : 7 V.Banbury (Footscray) vs Pt.Melb VFA 1912 4 A.Pannam (Coll) vs Geelong 1936 4 R.Rahilly (Fitz) vs St.Kilda 1911 4 K.Farmer (Nth. Adel) vs West Torrens SANFL 1930

I believe the Weiters trade talk came about through those speculating that the only way we can get Cody W is to trade 'a Weitering' to get the draft picks necessary. Fuelled by the fact that in the past GW has traded 'names'. So then these cabbageheads put two and two together and come up with cottage cheese.
We'll just have to wait to find out what the club strategy is to land Cody. Buckle up.

All I know is that we will taking some beating, and that is a good thing. I have always said that I yearned for the day we were hard to play against, we are just about there.

I can tell you the club that has historically been into Weiters more than any other, courtesy of his relative's activities at player management level, is Melbourne. The team Weiter's barracked for before becoming a Bagger, and a team short of KPDs after the ultimate demise of May and the ongoing injury issues of Lever.
The "Norp" part of the "Norp Melb" rumour is the error / fiction, and none of this necessarily means Weiter's himself has had any involvement, which is often the case.
Player Managers usually act in the best interests of the "Player" and the "Player Manager"!
We shouldn't be shocked, excluding a few radical fans, players like Weiters, Walsh, Cripps, Harry, etc., etc., are in high demand, if there is even a slight chance they will be investigated.

Well I watched the video after being in transit and I wasn't overtly impressed. Hard game to assess. A few, particularly those in the front half looked overawed. Byrne spilt marks and missed tackles, Cottrell burned how many chances, McG was unsighted and Cerra's first half stank. Wilson was very quiet. Both sides missed a lot of goals that really should have been kicked. If Hayward came in I suspect it may be for Young, although his flexibility is handy. Have to find match ups for Dangerflog, Smith and Dempsey, can't see the Cats shelling chances and bringing the ball into F50 with as little system as the dees.

Unfortunately, I was out and couldn't watch, so only had the replay. The game was full of pressure - both real and implied. The implied pressure made some basic skills look ordinary - dropped marks, missed goals, missed kicks and handballs.
Knowing the result before watching (wouldn't have bothered had we lost!), made it less stressful than it would have been live. However, there is a real commitment to the game plan and everyone knows what it is. There aren't nearly as many freebie opposition goals because of a stupid turnover that the opposition gets hold of and there always seems to be pressure on the opposition.
This team and their game is good to watch and hasn't really broken down yet. Ollie H's pass late in the third to set up Ainsworth's goal not long before the siren was a great example of the confidence that the players have. We weren't that far away from belting them, as our kicks and handballs weren't missing by much and there were so many 'nearly' marks.
That we can play below our best and still win is also a significant change from 14 or so weeks ago and will continue to build confidence. Just hope they don't get too far in front of themselves against Geelong.

There is always watchafl.com.au Subscribe to the minimum and watch away. Interestingly, my brother is in Italy at the moment and data roamed his phone across (he is with vodaphone and cost him $5 a day). He is has been able to watch footy normally on foxtelgo as if he is here in Australia. Thats never worked for me with esims and local european sims. I have always had to use watchafl.com.au

Same for me, replay only and I agree what you say. If Haywood is fit and ready, then I think Byrne or Cottrell makes way.; but I think Byrne because he looked lost and out of his depth and had zero impact. Byrne wasn't alone tbh, but we don't want to start making too many changes to a winning combo.

I think dropping him would be a mistake - he was still effective but just couldn’t get into the game enough and imo you could see he was disappointed in his game.
McG is the funny one for me. He just cannot be relied on and as a very snr player I just get so frustrated by his dropped marks and errant kicks.

I thought Byrne did OK at becoming a target as the Dees sat on Evans, Byrne attracting the footy a couple of times on the wing helped diffuse the Evans tag, even if not much come out of it. Of course I concede Hayward will cover this easily, but I don't think that Byrne wasn't contributing.
Given the Cats ruck situation, Edwards then Blicsav, I wouldn't be surprised if Young goes out for Hayward, it may depend on Pitto's freshness.
I could see Cottrell or Lord in a negative role on Bailey Smith, so the MC might want to preserve those options, last time we played Smith was let off the hook.
If Haynes is an out it may be unlucky for Derksen, if Hayward gets up Hayward / Haynes might well be the only change, or we could also see Derksen / Young if Haynes is an out. I thought last time we played the Handbaggers our problem was stopping them scoring, despite Weiters having one of his better games before he went out, our F50 functioned pretty well.

One player who showed some inexperience in a role was Cerra, he won't be dropped, but until last weekend he'd had a bit of a golden run as a defender.
At the weekend he found out what it was all about when the heat is on, he'll be better for that.

Byrne did get involved a bit, but dropped 2-3 easy marks (he wasn't alone in that) and also appeared quite fumbly and nervous with ball in hand - finals nerves but he wasn't alone. Haywood for Young makes good sense too, as you say it just depends which way they want to go, and if haynes gets up or not.

It's the unwillingness to ruck Cameron anywhere on the ground that makes the situation interesting. I understand avoiding the center square, but I've never really understood why they do not have him take stoppages inside the arc, it just doesn't make sense.
Last time we played you may recall they rucked Neale and he came off lame.

Agree totally. MOG has so much talent but he is so erratic that a simple chest mark can bounce straight off him yet in the next breath he will make a team lifting run down tackle or take a hanger.

So half (if not more) of my extended family is geelong. Some of my closest friends are also geelong.
I spoke to all of them asking if they got tickets.
Of the 5 of the most diehard geelong members, none of them got tickets. NOT because they couldnt get tickets, no, because they didnt want tickets!
"Prefer to watch this one at home." "Got a kids sport thing i should go to."
That really bothered me. This mob has been so spoiled for success that its almost beneath them to worry about turning up to such an 'unimportant' finals match. 'We'll see the next one'
I can guarantee you that like the melbourne game, there will be a hell of a lot more carlton supporters than opposition supporters and we'll be 10 times louder too.
This means a lot more to us than it does them. Hopefully the boys feed off our energy and smash the pussycats. They dont deserve it. They dont appreciate it.

SEN's "team of the week" has seven Bluebaggers and Josh is the coach. With only two games, having seven of our players named isn't all that surprising, but it's still good recognition.
The seven players are Dean, Weitering, Cerra, Smith, Walsh, Hollands and Ainsworth. I was pleased to see Cerra included. After reading some of the comments here, I was starting to think that I must have watched a different game ::)
Three defenders, three midfielders and one forward is a pretty good representation of how we performed. It would be nice to have another couple of forwards doing enough to be named.

Hollands and Ainsworth deserve additional Kudos as they were swimming against the tide when melbourne were well on top IMHO. Of course, Dean and Weitering were no slouches in this regard, but still sometimes to get going you need a few good soldiers who just keep on keeping on.

I didn't think that Melbourne was on top at any stage. They were certainly on top on the scoreboard in the first quarter but we were playing better footy.

And a Q I asked earlier... anyone know the record for a single player hitting the post the most times in a game? Surely 3 has to be close. And number by the team? 5 also seemed a lot.
Reply #57 and reply #60 on pages 4 and 5 of this thread. That's the best we can do I'm afraid.

The player who I thought really got us going was Cotters with his link up work. If only he hadn't kept aiming at the posts ::)
Thats not how I saw the game, but I was sitting on a half forward flank on one side of the ground. For mine, I though Ainsworth was the main difference maker early.
I want to also dot point something. The demons finish better they may very well have put the game beyond us early. I know we finished quite poorly ourselves, but they were 4.3 at quarter time to our 1.3, and whilst we bettered them in the second, the third was a knife edge with them kicking 2.4 to our 3.3.
The final quarter was one way traffic, but I didnt really feel comfortable until then due to the fact that we were struggling to generate scores from our posession chains, and the ball was getting turned over on the kick into forward 50.
Once again, Frankie evans was clamped down on, and once again we struggled.
I didnt start calling him the barometer for nothing!

Evans was still important with his tackling and forward pressure,

Obviously, different people see things different ways and I was looking at our dominance in all stats apart from clearances and goals in the first quarter, as well as watching our ball movement and confidence in taking the game on. Our game style means that we will have significantly more possessions than the opposition. A turnover after a long possession chain can appear worse than it is, particularly when our defence is more than likely to win possession back.
Melbourne had 49 turnovers to our 47 but, when you look at total disposals, we were going at one turnover every nine disposals to Melbourne's one turnover every six and a half disposals. We were also more efficient when we got the ball inside 50, partly due to some heads up ball use when we got inside 50.
I don't think that Frankie was clamped down on at all. He had 11 disposals, eight tackles, five inside 50s, one goal assist, four score involvements and kicked one behind. The week before he had 11 disposals, two tackles, one goal assist, two inside 50s, nine score involvements and kicked five goals. He was just getting the pill a little further up the ground and, if anything, his tackles and inside 50s more than made up for not troubling the scorers. Fraser's comment about Frankie doing "what needs to be done for the team" is spot on. One week it might be kicking goals, the next week it might be tackling and hitting targets inside 50.

Evans was actually named in the best in the AFL.com match report.
