Well deserved for Dylan Buckley and lets hope that form continues vs Essendon....
Youth rarely lets you down......agree Cripps, Graham need to get a nomination to give the club another boost and I'll even throw in Tom Bell...

Bell is too old. Must be under 21 and have played less than 10 games before Jan 1.

Buckley, who stands 179cm tall and looks as though he could be knocked over by a gentle breeze, made an immediate impression on his debut in round three last year against Geelong.

Substituted on to the field in the second term, he snapped a brilliant left-foot goal on the run after just 18 seconds on the park.

But that loss against the Cats would be the speedster's only senior appearance for the year.

Hate this crappy reporting. Pretty sure it as against the Aints.

"It's a dream come true to play for Carlton. With dad playing at the club I've been around here for a while ... to put the jumper on means so much.

Exactly what I said in the the other thread. He is Carlton through and through and he goes about it like he's really playing for the jumper. We need more of him.

I guess when Bell plays 100 games and qualifies under your award winning formula as a succesful recruit you will claim him as another Wayne Hughes recruiting success......speaking of hacks... :)

Well done young Bucks.
On a side note, Carlton would have to be the least nominated club for The Rising Star. From memory I think Yaz has been nominated. Off the top of my head I cant think of another player who has been nominated. Great Recruiting Hughes

One thing I have neglected to do in the aftermath of our loss to Richmond was to acknowledge how well Dylan Buckley played.

I have had my doubts about whether he would make it as an AFL player and, while it's still early days (or early doors as an ex-coach used to say), I'm happy to admit that I was wrong.

SOJ (I don't think that will catch on) showed pace, a very good ability to read the play, good decision making, strong tackling and a bit of fire.  He certainly deserved his Rising Star nomination and I'm sure we'll see a lot more of him in future.

Well done Dylan!

Post by: Thryleon on April 01, 2014, 02:08:25 pm
No light, no tunnel, just a drop of positivity in an ocean of bullcrap expectations.

One rising star nomination doesnt make a player.  He has effectively been picked as one to watch moving forward as he has a future.

That should be the minimal expectation that we have on our youngsters.  Instead, we seem to have the opposite.  We are so entrenched in failure we have no idea how to recognise success.

You wont see a proper club patting a bloke on the back for a rising star nomination.  They will simply give the guy a pat on the back and on we go.

Post by: Thryleon on April 01, 2014, 02:19:25 pm
Carrots, im not debating his worth right now he has been ratified as future prospect that we all think he is going to be.

Good.

That should be the benchmark for all our recruits.  The expectations need to lift at all levels for this place, and having a bloke on the list for 3 years not getting a game, and not even looking the goods when he gets his chance finally is just not good enough anymore.

Terrific news. I love what MM has done in terms of teaching him to have a defensive game. Perhaps even making him, in the short term, a small defender / back pocket.

In the NBs he played as a mid and / or small forward and tended to fade in and out of games. And when he was on he looked really good, but too often just vanished. Now being down back means he cannot afford lapses in concentration and is learning the caper nicely and no doubt learning about his real potential.

At this stage, only up side. Must be given consistent games in the Seniors now.

He needs to learn to be flexible, straight to fullback!

Problem is we have heap of guys who play there best footy at half back...

Russell, Gibbs, Henderson, Yarran, Simpson, Scotland, Buckley, Tuohy... (have left Walker out as his best footy is forward) and then recruit, Bootsma, Davies, O'Keefe, Docherty, Temay etc. as small medium defenders...

happy for Bucks to be that small defender that we have lacked as his skills were stood out as well as his pace and mongrel. I wrote him off in the preseason but i was so excited by his game.

If only we had won, then I could go back and watch him again. Too painful to watch anything at all after losing like that.

We have been praying for a decent small defender since....  Adrian Whitehead?  Matty Hogg?  I can't remember it's been so long.

I worry about his body shape and build for longevity the top level, plus his history of very severe football-caused injuries (eg shoulders).  Jim was also very light but only ran one way - fast, straight and hard.

Watching the rising sun video... gees Buckley copped some treatment.  The Griffiths foot thing was accidental but very, very clumsy and could have been paid as a trip, but whatever Vickery attempted to do was totally unnecessary and should have been penalised ....  pretty weak stuff from Vickery IMO.  And fancy getting pushed over by a bloke 25 kilos lighter...

The thing I loved about his game was just his intensity and attack on the contest. You could see on his face and in everything that he did that he was giving 100% effort 100% of the time. He ran himself to a standstill, cramped in the last qtr, then got up and went again. He gave away the clumsy free kick against Jack that led to their goal at the end, but his courage and willingness to run back with the flight at that late stage to create a contest was highly commendable. Everytime he got the ball he seemed to be prepared to take the game on.

It's all you can ask for in a young player - you can forgive them making mistakes as long as they are learning and they are putting in the effort. He provides flexibilty because he has pace and seems to use the ball pretty well, and having him in the side gives MM more options for Walker, Simpson and Yarran.

The sad reason why it stood out was that it is so rare for our recruits to play this way. The almost complete lack of intensity from Lucas, Bootsma and Watson drives me mad........

I don't disagree.

I just think you can't coach or develop indivdual hunger and desire in players - in my experience around footy a player either has it or he doesn't. Dylan looks like he has it in spades. And MM post game was glowing in praise for him and how he approaches his footy.

Unfortunately too many of our recruits seem to be seriously lacking in this area, or treat it is an 'optional extra' that comes and goes from time to time!

He will still need time, give him this next pre-season to get to his preferred playing weight and then another couple of preseasons to build a tank and in around 3 years time, we may have ourselves an exciting midfielder !!

He is exciting and will be a match winner. I'm certain he will get faster and last games easier when he has that tank. The mature body will help him around the contests. ;)
