John Evans is a mate and former colleague ... but not the same bloke.  Interestingly, my John Evans competed at Stawell in the 1980s but in the 400m.

There is a bit of wailing and gnashing of teeth by some folk who are complaining about a format that sees the best runners unable to make the final.

They need to get over it.
It's the way it's been for around 150 years and everyone knows exactly what the format is when they enter.
Stawell itself is bigger than Gout Gout or Kennedy.
The closeness of the majority of races over the weekend meant that the handicapper(s) did a pretty good job...and it makes for exciting racing.
If you want to see the best against the best you can see that at the nationals.

The initial squad for the World Track and Field Championships has been named.
Both Kennedy and Gout Gout (in his senior international debut) will be running

This squad is only a first phase grouping and the strict criteria, which included competing at domestic lead up events to nationals, means that there are still some big name yet to be added....women sprinters,Rohan Browning, Denny, Olyslagers, Jess Hull etc.

That will happen as the northern Hemisphere summer season takes place.

I thought after Nationals and  Stawell that more than anything Kennedy and Gout probably needed a break.
Gout especially looked pretty much done after the backmarkers race.

Kennedy had other ideas and headed off to China for the first of the Wanda Diamond League races.

In the 100 metre race featuring all sub 10.00 sec runners...apart from Kennedy, he has finished a creditable fifth in 10.18 (virtually no wind)

Akane Simbine a 9.82 runner was the winner in 9.99

He's done it!

Kennedy 9.98....into a headwind.
He's won the race beating the young South African Bayanda Walaza who ran a 9.94 last week but could only manage a 10.03 in this race.

Gout Gout runs 20.02 and breaks the Australian 200m record in his first race in Europe

Running at the Diamond League meet in Monaco Peter Bol has broken his own Australian 800 metre record running 1.42.55
Gout Gout won an u/23 200 metre race runninf 20.10 into a 1.9 metre headwind.

"Gout Gout has reportedly broken the 10-second 100m barrier at a schoolboy meet on Friday night. 

*Gout crossed the line in 9.94 seconds but the time will not be officially recorded as it was a hand-timed event.

Running in what is believed to be legal wind, the unofficial time could be a sign of what is to come at the upcoming World Championships."
It's still the Gulf of Mexico, Don Old!

They can allow and adjust for reaction / response times, as they did in the Olympics for most of Olympic history, but it can't be official relative to modern digital timing, also manual can mean more than one thing.

The type of "manual" could even mean he ran faster than recorded! :o
"Extremists on either side will always meet in the Middle!"

Just be a little cautious about the time.

A lot depends on the quality of the timekeepers, but even with good ones the general conversion rate from hand time to electric is to add 0.24 sec so it's more likely a 10.1-10.2 run
And it is "believed it was a legal wind" doesn't sound as though they were sure..

On the positive side it was still a good run and he seems on track to peak at the Worlds, but I'm not sure he will run the 100m
Last I saw he was only selected for the 200

There are some pretty  good 100 metre runners around at the moment.
The 10th fastest time this year is 10.88
But the majority of the top 10 are Americans (5) and Jamaicans (4)
Lachie Kennedy is currently 27th with his sub 10.00 run earlier this year.
But given the fact it's a three per nation rule he must be a good chance to at least reach the semis if he's in that type of form
