Its the old adage that a "drowning man will cling onto a serpent", in this case its a drowning country...
Im wondering if Harris has suffered from lack of turn out rather than lack of support?

Spot on, ripper pick-up, EB1. Thus far, Dem numbers who voted last time (2020) are down almost 20 million! Yep, poor Dem turnout sure did help the Orange One... whose numbers are also down but only about 3 million on last time. Republicans basically held, Democrats fell in a very big hole.

Could that drop in numbers partially be explained by the fact that some of the West Coast States, Hawaii and Alaska haven't fully reported yet.
There'd be a big swag of Dem votes in some of those states.
(California only half counted last time I looked.)
It won't make a difference to the result, but it may make a difference to the total turnout numbers and even the popular vote figures

Trump in a landslide, nobody picked that.

Democrats only have themselves to blame - if you don't vote don't bitch about the result.
DrE is no more... you ok with that harmonica man?

I'm no fan of the Dems, but they were certainly up against it when you consider that Fox, Twitter and others essentially function as propaganda arms for the GOP.

It was always going to be tough when Joe told voters what they really think about them.
The media tried to keep pumping up the racist comedian but it kind of hits home when your president calls you garbage.

Absolutely.

As it stands Thursday morning (7th) Republicans down about 1 million on 2020, Democrats down about 15 million. Probably end up that the Orange One held his base of about 73 million on 2020, and Democrats will be down about 13-15 million from the same election.

So the burning question for the Democrats is, how come our turn-out was down about 15%? It needed to increase, not decrease.
IMHO, 1. Get a strong, articulate leader and yes, as shallow as it is... charismatic. 2. Sell positivity, vision, hope and policies that address cost of living pressures. 3. Don't rely on Hollywood celebrities to sell you. 4. Don't focus on demonizing your opponent. In 2024 the Dems focussed on points 3 & 4.

Yep, that was a shocker (garbage comment) from Biden and would have been a strong motivator for Republican voters to get to the polls. In Aussie parlance - d*ckhead comment from Biden.

The post-mortems will go on for a while no doubt.

Both sides played the man/woman rather than the ball.

In the end it probably came down to this....

One side offered more of the same.
The other side offered something different.

If you were dissatisfied with your lot, and many Americans expressed that in exit polls, then you probably opted for "different".

The Democrats have a bit of work to do.
One thing they can't be obsessed about is the incoming President.

Given the state of both sides of the political divide, my fear is that this result will empower some nut job to make a run here.  Because the average person is dumb enough to fall for it - lord knows we need change - but at what cost?

Yep.

One of the issues with postmortems, especially with elections results, is that the simple and core reasons get lost in massive word salads. It often aint complicated.

As you mentioned, the Dems didn't sell hope, addressing cost of living expenses - same old, same old. They were too focussed on Trump... silly. Their candidate was vanilla. The Republicans sold hope (with wild, ridiculous promises... but many US citizens love that stuff).

I think our party system is a bit more structured than the American one.
And a bit more disciplined in respect of standards.
Things like an upgrade on a Qantas flight are a major issue.
I can't see how a candidate like Trump would ever make it to the top of one of the major parties.
Trump's behaviour would never pass the pub test in Australia.
It would more likely be as the leader of a minor 'extreme' movement like One-nation

The American executive structure is separate from the legislative body.
They run independently and although there is a reliance and dependence to some extent, it is often the case that the congress is a made up of folks from a different party to the President. ( maybe not so in America for the next couple of years at least).

That's not to say it couldn't happen but I think we are years away.

We're kind of fond of the 'bland' rather than the 'showman'. The one time we picked a bit of a 'larrikin' it was because folk could identify with him and he didn't talk a lot of crap and make ridiculous comments.

The MAGA polling station judge was back on the wireless this morning banging on about how Aurangzeb is going to get rid of the “chemtrails” in the sky.

Says it all really 🙄

Senator Bernie Sanders has delivered a withering assessment of the state of the Democratic Party after Kamala Harris’ election defeat.

Sanders, who contested the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020, shared a statement to X, saying that it should come as “no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working-class people would find that the working class has abandoned them”.

“While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change. And they’re right.”

Sanders’ statement said the party had first been abandoned by the white working class, and now also by the black and Latino working class.

The long-standing Vermont senator argued that the worsening standard of living, lack of healthcare and continued funding for the “extremist Netanyahu government’s” war in Gaza were reasons for the discontent in the US.

“Will the big money interests and well-paid consultants who control the Democratic Party learn any real lessons from this disastrous campaign?” Sanders asked.

“Probably not,” he concluded.

On 3AW just now 'Kevin Rudd has removed all his anti Trump tweets and messages on social media'

Another 2 faced politician when it didn't suit him he quickly changed his tune so how genuine where his comments then?

Not the right person to be our ambassador and needs to be replaced as Trump is very aware of all those who berated him so cant see Mr Rudd pulling the wool over his eyes and it will affect us moving forward.
