While we continue to think in general terms of 'left' and 'right' there will always be this conflict.
I find the language on both sides of American politics equally deplorable as individuals are vilified to the point where some crazy loon takes these actions.

People who celebrate the assaination of someone who had done nothing but hold an alternate view than them are scum. Right now, in our world, that's the left. The same group of people largely in power in Australia, scum.

I wouldn’t say that but I do note the irony of the situation.
If you were to celebrate in this situation it would speak volumes of the decline in morals and decency.

Yes, i believe it is still the case. But thats half the point.

People with guns, kill people with guns.

Don't have guns and people don't get killed with guns.

More guns = more deaths.

Somehow a death = preventable with more guns (American logic).

Absolute classic, K. Jim put himself up there with George Carlin when he did this 'guns' routine.

Though I will disagree with you on one point, K (though I do get the point you're making), plenty of people with guns kill people without guns. And people so inclined to harm others and can't get ahold of a gun will use a knife or machete... or death cap mushrooms!

The "left", however you may wish to define it, is a movement comprising million and millions of people. Finding a few ratbags is not hard. If you're getting your information from Fox News, I'd suggest you pay careful attention to the way they cherry pick and frame what they write.

I follow over 200 left leaning politicians, journalists etc on socials, and I recall maybe 2 who in some fashion, suggest he got what he deserved. The rest were all quite clear in condemning gun violence of any kind, against anyone.

Yep. Tribalism.

The sweeping generalization stating that the 'Left' is celebrating the assassination, is just plain silly. There are enough sad individuals about the globe who are so detached from humanitarianism that they'll delight in the violent demise of those who's political or religious ideology is different to theirs - but they really are in the minority, though in sufficient numbers to make a noise and embarrass us all.

But, as very well pointed out by PaulP, if you focus on the assassinations in human history you'll find that the political far Right extremists have perpetrated many more political murders, by some margin, of 'peacemakers.' In fact, as far back as one notable 'lefty,' J Christ, and other prominent religious figures who dared to preach peace - the cads! Not to mention the Kennedy's, Gandhi, Yitzhak Rabin... and the list goes on.

Any murder of any human being is a tragedy, wrong and devoid of justification (self defence is not murder). We humans have still a very long way to go to embrace living in peace together.

Any discussion of “scum” has to include the nazis who tried to beat up Aboriginal women at Camp Sovereignty last week.

I was listening to a senior police officer outlining plans to deal with the demonstrations planned for Melbourne this Saturday.  His description of the situation was basically groups of fascists and anti-fascists who are heading to Melbourne just to punch on with their opposition.

The difference between that and what’s happening in the USA is that our politicians, of virtually all persuasions, condemn those extreme fascist and anti-fascist ideologies and the use of violence.  The language of politics in the USA does just the opposite and encourages what is essentially a low grade civil war.

Of course, we’re not completely immune as the tragic shootings in Porepunkah demonstrate.

Another key difference between us and them is that the USA does not have a left wing political party in so far as the ALP can be considered a centre-left party.  The Republicans and Democrats are both conservative parties beholden to wealthy elites.  Bernie Sanders is the left wing.

Before people take a side in this debate, do not forget RedTrump pardoned blokes who beat someone to death at the Whitehouse, someone who wasn't much more than a concierge by US Public facility standards.

If you want to point blame, there it is right there and it is unequivocal, normalised violence by RedTrump.

RedTrump is that dumb he thinks it's only going to happen in one direction.

It happens here to, perhaps not to the same extreme, but for example volunteers at the Shrine of Remembrance being bashed by protestors. Luckily when that happened nobody died, but here the perpetrators didn't get pardoned by the politicians.
