Jim Park Medal 2019 AFL Rd 12: Carlton vs Brisbane

What a difference a week makes!

Remember:
[1] At least 3 players need to get a mention.
[2] No more than 10 votes for any one player.
[3] Give a rating of team performance. It can be anywhere from A+ to F.
[4] Votes must add up to 15.

Stress: No 15 votes to Cripps, even if he was that good.

10 : Cripps
2 : Curnow E

1 : Simpson (solely for the shot gun psych out standing the mark on Mathieson, which both worked and made me chuckle).

I don’t usually give an A for a 15-point win, but this one was very different.
[1]   We should have been pounded by a team with a good game plan and some nice young kids who deserved to be in the top 5. Not like the bunch of duds we’ve been making into heroes over the last few weeks.
[2]   We had the week from Hell where our coach was sacked, and question marks were put over everybody and everything.
Now this may have been the response, a ‘dead cat bounce’, but I hope it is a sign of things to come. Besides, some of our young kids played their best ever games yesterday. They deserve a reward.

Votes:
[3]   Patrick Cripps
[2.5]   Ed Curnow
[2.5]   Sam Walsh
[2]   Jacob Weitering
[1]   Zac Fisher
[1]   Michael Gibbons
[0.5]   Sam Petrevski-Seton
[0.5]   Dale Thomas
[0.5]   Matthew Kreuzer
[0.5]   Caleb Marchank
[0.5]   Nick Newman
[0.5]   Levi Casboult

Explanations:
[3]   Patrick Cripps:   Arguably the best game played this year. Cripps did it all. He equalled his best possession total, he marked superbly, and he kicked 4 goals. Not only did he kick the goals, but he wanted to kick the goals. He believed in himself and took the responsibility. Brilliant!
[2.5]   Ed Curnow:   Ed was good early, but when he moved onto Lachie Neale at half time, he changed the game. He really got under Neale’s skin and took him totally out of the game. It is the first true tag we’ve run in ages and it worked brilliantly.
[2.5]   Sam Walsh:   That idiot Kane Cornes doesn’t realize just how good Walsh is. Well, he got a serious reminder this round. Walsh’s game was probably his best.
[2]   Jacob Weitering:   Weitering was excellent in defence. He took out Brisbane’s key forwards and provided good rebound and strong marking in defence.
[1]   Zac Fisher:   Zac hasn’t had a great year to date, but he was excellent this time. His disposal also needs improvement: it was terrible in the 1st quarter. His pace and run were thrilling and really helped in the midfield.
[1]   Michael Gibbons:   Probably his best game for us so far, Gibbo got reward for his work and hit targets where others missed.
[0.5]   Sam Petrevski-Seton:   Still not as consistent as I would like, but he did some very nice things.
[0.5]   Dale Thomas:   Real leadership in defence from Daisy.
[0.5]   Matthew Kreuzer: Probably just won against Martin, who usually kills him. Just removing Martin from the equation was a huge positive for us.
[0.5]   Caleb Marchank:   Improving in the air and with his disposal. Some telling marks.
[0.5]   Nick Newman:   Very solid in defence, even when we were ordinary.
[0.5]   Levi Casboult:   Continues to have real influence in defence. This is probably the most consistent that Levi has ever played.

Honourable Mentions:
Paddy Dow:   In the end Dow only had 13 – 14 possessions, but he was really good early. His kicking wasn’t great, but he really provided some spark in the centre square. While he needs to work badly on his kicking, I felt he had turned a corner after considerable disappointments.
Lochie O’Brien:   This was easily O’Briends best game for Carlton, even though he was in and out of the game as well. His opponent didn’t dominate. He put his body in. He hits targets. Honestly, to this point of time O’Brien has been a real failure. This effort shows why we recruited him.
Will Setterfield:   Setters still has a lot way to go, but he also played probably his best game so far. His disposal was much better, and he did some very clever things. His kicking for goal … he needed to want that. That was his worst moment by a long way.
Charlie Curnow:   I could honestly say that Charlie was beaten on the day. His opponent was impressive. However, unlike recent times, Charlie did not sulk and do nothing. Instead he kicked 3 impressive goals and still provided a target.
