I've heard some relatively new rumours today that should have users of cloud storage concerned, particularly if you us US controlled cloud storage, which I suppose means the likes of Google, Apple, Microsoft, Dropbox, etc., etc... btw., This has surfaced from time to time, but up until now nobody has actually acted on it as it seems undemocratic.

It seems that somehow on the quiet some new proposed laws and changes are being pushed through that basically open your data to the likes of Musk's DOGE and whoever sits in the Whitehouse with the will and resources to analyse the data, I suppose not every Presidential Mandate gets a lot of publicity. Your data exposed, it's security and availability reduced.

Oddly, Australia might be immune as it appears our laws require the big players to operate and secure local storage of data, one of the big reasons we often only get access to a subset of services and content, but that doesn't mean it won't just be switched off! But if you use a VPN to skirt around geo-blocking, you might be sh1t out of luck! :o

I bet a lot of corporations are today scrambling to get their data back local, can imagine the commercial damage someone could inflict if they removed access to a US hosted database!
It would be niaive to think that the powers that be (here or overseas) don't access our cloud based data (now, past or future). I dont care what rules are in place, if "someone" wants to take a sneaky look, they can and will.

Also no one cares about your dog photos, just don't upload stuff you wouldn't want someone else to see and you'll be fine.  For those who are about to argue this point with me, buy an external storage device and connect it up at home.

One problem with Dutton’s wealth is his continual failure to update the Register of Interests.  These aren’t a matter of being a couple of days late but months, years or never.  It’s either deliberate or incompetence.

Them there’s the hypocrisy of his attack on Albo for buying a house.

Another problem is the allegation that his bank shares were purchased with the knowledge that the Rudd government was about to announce a bailout.

Dutton could be squeaky clean but forgetful about his real estate purchases and extremely lucky that he picked the perfect time to buy bank shares.
It's still the Gulf of Mexico, Don Old!

I don't get the media focus on Dutton's private business and personal wealth, like as a candidate being good with profit and loss is a bad thing. I don't get mainstream media tying this into political morality, like money is dirty, given the article they publish is cash for comments.

Also from a historical perspective, in trying to make this a Red versus Blue debate, the media seem to be happily ignoring Rudd, Hawke, Whitlam and Chifley who were all independently wealthy for various reasons. FFS, Chifley had a habit of buying houses for his various "affectionate partners!"

I would be more concerned about China feeling completely comfortable playing war games off our coast.

Firstly, I'm not sure what the rules are, it use to be the case that you only had to register items if there was a potential conflict in your portfolio.

Secondly, if he was disposing of the assets at the time, and I note he's pretty much disposed of them all to deliver a clear run for the top job, it's hardly the conspiracy the media want to make out.

I'm not really for or against, but I do like parity in the way we deal with all in politics, everybody under the same rules and evaluated under the same terms. At the moment, probably courtesy of Red Trump, I sense an imbalance in reporting.

I think AI is complicating this, for example I read today that there since the arrival of ChatGPT, Gemini and others, there has been a clear spike in IP filings coming out of the big IT companies, Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc., etc.. Some are speculating this is driven by AI harvesting potential ideas from people searching on the internet. Reading that reminds me of the movie Minority Report.

That's not what society wants or needs.

there's no complication though LP.

You want privacy?  Keep it off a device connected to any online service.

If you upload stuff to anywhere cloud storage it's accessible by anyone motivated who wants it.  That means, the only way to keep it out of others ands and eyes, is to only use offline devices to store it.  That means a home storage device like a usb or a local network storage device but keep in mind even those are likely connected online but more easily secured.

Cloud.  Fancy front end, a bunch of really hard core hardware on the bck end only differentiated by users and passwords.  Yes I've simplified but it rings true.  Don't believe me?  Microsoft azure is a bunch of hyper v hosts.  Yes the network security here is fantastic but its still a server in a data centre and that means that someone motivated can grab your stuff.

Sure they aren't gonna.  IT People are over worked sorting out real problems not trawling through people's crap in case something interesting is found.

Ultimately you are still a lazy admin or error away from being exposed.  At home though that stuff is much harder to get too (unless you are flippant with your device security) or backup to cloud.

Thry, the public is being funnelled to these huge corporate services now, they have no choice.

Kids no longer have school books, libraries are closing, calculators, dictionaries and encyclopaedia are on phones, internet search is king, and it is  all monetised.

If people had the choice you suggest there wouldn't be an issue, and there would be no training data for the AI sector either, but that is clearly not the case.

They have choices about how they use it LP.

They are funnelled there by businesses selling services. Nothing more nothing less.  You must still do your due diligence and its up to you.

Yank Podcast "Casuals With Katie Nolan"  -  she is a pretty funny intersection-of-sport-and-pop-culture type, who has had gigs on ESPN and Fox Sports etc

Today's episode, her Australian producer goes on a rant about Jagger's injury!!!   On a fairly popular yank podcast!!

About the 30min mark

A BOM employee begged GC people not to be complacent, she said Alfred slowing might be a bit like a ballerina stretching her arms just before she tucks, there is still a ridiculous amount of energy available.

I think the general rule is now to 'forecast' a severe to worst  case scenario for these events.
I actually  don't have a huge problem with that.

So...here in Brisbane.
We've spent the last few days cleaning up the yard and securing loose garden furniture.
It'll take us a couple of days to put everything back (although it has perhaps given us an idea of things we really can do without)

The result so far is no damage that I can see, particularly in areas I was concerned about. (windows, roof, garage doors)
The power has (so far) stayed on
We've had summer storms worse than this.

But ...there is still some concern about rainfall, and a few gusty winds in the days to come.
So we'll stay cautious.

Some of the reporting on this has been a bit insensitive and sometime silly.
One reporter/ host last night was talking to one of the residents out on the islands and said to him (regarding the fibro houses)..."when it hits they'll all be gone"). Hopefully there were no island kids watching that idiot.
Just saw a reporter standing 'out in the open' saying how silly people were to be out walking their dogs and exercising. It seemed a bit ridiculous as she was out in the open too.

Reporters are talking about "dogged a bullet", reporting of this severe wind/storm event is laughable, ask the people of 1974 Darwin what a real cyclone looks and feels like. Just a massive ass covering exercise alarming the public for no reason IMO.
