What a difference a few months make. When Marty Sheargold made comments about the Matildas and women's soccer, Mr Woke himself Bob Murphy tore him a new one. Today we wake to the news about Murphy apologising to co host Sharnelle Vella after making what I would consider a misogynistic comment on air yesterday suggesting she had worked at a popular Melbourne strip club (which was false and inappropriate).
So Mr Murphy, are you going to live and die by the sword and stand down from the radio show?
I somehow doubt it.

In a social and political environment where offense exists in the eye of the beholder it's not hard to make an offensive comment, the difference can be just the time of day!

Tell someone in the morning they can't wear ripped strides to a formal function and they'll go out and buy a new outfit, tell them after the shops have closed and you are an offensive misogynist racist bigot, et. al..!

You can quibble about whether Murphy should stay or go, but understanding nuance is crucial. Murphy is a good guy who made a one off stupid comment (whom among us hasn't), and Sheargold went on a rant lasting at least two days, making ill informed comments on the Matildas one day, then the next day commenting that women whinge and whine about endometriosis, which he claimed is made up. I can steal a loaf of bread to eat, and someone can steal a pensioner's life savings, and we're both thieves, but not in any way the same.

Bob might be stood down permanently if the show's ratings don't improve.

It was a stupid and offensive comment and Sharnelle has every right to be p1ssed off with him as she made clear when he apologised.  However, it's nowhere near as bad as Sheargold's comments denigrating the Matildas and women's sport generally.  And then there's Sheargold's disgraceful claim, made the day after his Matildas comment, that endometriosis is a "made up" condition .  His departure from the airways is no great loss.

I don't listen to Murphy and Vella all that often but, when I have, it has been entertaining and informative even if Murphy is on L plates as a broadcaster.  His attempt at humour backfired in a big way but I'm happy for him to get a second chance.  I have a feeling that Vella isn't so keen and he'll be gorn if there's the slightest hint of a repeat.

I'll take the a counter position.

While I've no doubt it exists I was shocked to listen to a group in the office claiming that a specialist broadcast on ACA or 60 Minutes (I did not see it) was talking bunkum when she claimed that endometriosis afflicted roughly 1 in 20 women. That went down like a lead balloon in our office, where it seems "Endo" has a 100% strike rate!

I suspect in this regard that "Endo" is becoming the new plague, like the 1518 Dancing Plague, or the 2021 US outbreak of teenage tourettes. I think there is a word for it!

PS; I was just reading about TDK, my throat is sore!

Did you ever listen to sheargold or are you looking at the incidents in isolation?

As you say, nuance is crucial.

He, unlike Bob Murphy, is in the comedy business. Cutting edge comedy usually offends someone. People are easily offended.
Actions speak louder than words and Sheargold on-air persona is a bit different.

I listened to Marty Sheargold for about a year. Says things that are controversial, but does it with a smile. Even the female on-air talent that are the barbs of his jokes follow him from network to network, so it can't be all that bad.

I don't have any skin in the game one way or another, but painting Bob Murphy as a 'good guy' and Sheargold as 'not' is subjective and limited to their on-air personas. Its very dangerous.

How many 'good guys' end up being serial killers. You don't know people. You only know what they show you.

At the end of the day, what you say might be right......but it might be wrong.

Murphy will be lucky to survive, ratings on the show are poor and his Super Woke image is polarising. While Im not a fan I dont think he is a bad bloke and for some reason he decided to go with what he thought was the comedy route maybe in an effort to broaden his image in that Sheargold, Mick Malloy popularist type of way. It backfired and came out offensive, false and totally inappropriate and Im going to put it down to being under pressure and trying to be something he isnt.
He should stay in his lane, stick to what he knows in Sport etc, be the different wokey new age guy and leave the cras, inappropriate comedy to those who do it for a living and rightly or wrongly dont have to tread a tight moral line unlike Murphy who has grown his career by walking that line.

Not much wrong with Murphy and Vella, but the ABC has completely the wrong demographic for that pair, the Granographic is surprisingly and quite possible the harshest general purpose demographic for the woke sector.

Most of the listeners are rusted on WWW surplus children or boomers, and they have zero sympathy for kids who complain about not being able to find a rental on their 4k Full HD iPhone while munching a smashed avo and sipping a caramel cinnamon oat milk raw sugar iced latte with a vegan whipped cream dollop!

Yep, it's a real shame society wants comedians to lift their game, and demand of them some effort and originality, and not get by lazily picking on minority and other marginalized groups. Diceman, come on down.

Red Symons successfully hosted that show for 14 years and I think it had the Boomers appeal and most of those listeners would have been the rusted on variety and he has been a tough act to follow given the opposition especially from 3AW has dominated that timeslot.

Yeah comedians.  Just make white privileged men the butt of your jokes and you won't get cancelled.

You can say what you want about them.

I heard Red speaking at the ABC birthday do and he explained how he manipulated/engaged with his audience.  He would simply make an incorrect statement - the example he gave was “all Melbourne pubs have one of six names” - then field calls from listeners desperate to correct him.  He would then seize on a contentious comment and use that to generate even more debate.

Red is a very smart fellow with a good sense of humour, the ability to think on his feet and the capacity to engage with a diverse audience.  With the exception of Sammy J, the ABC has failed to come up with a presenter or combination with anywhere near Red’s appeal.
