Our Next Captain

One of the criticisms of our current situation centres around a lack of leadership.
Cripps is more of a 'follow me' type of leader, a bit like Judd in that respect.
A standout best player, but does that translate to a good captain.
In any case we probably need to be looking to the future.
He's just passed into the wrong side of 30 and plays a very physical game so longevity may also be an issue.

The obvious choice is Weitering- I have a few concerns around some of the on-field stuff we see when he criticises others. Some may think that's a good thing... and it may be. I just wonder how he's viewed by other players. The other issue we may have is durability. Seems to be playing through a lot of niggly injuries at present.
But if you look after Weitering the cupboard is pretty thin.

Walsh would have been my pick a few seasons ago-but injury is an increasing issue-and he may not be here anyway.
Silvagni-Would be a good choice. 100% committed a great example to others. But can we have a captain who only plays on average around 3/4 of a season.
Curnow-is a man-child. Doesn't really strike me as a leader
Harry needs to look after himself at present-not a whole team.
De Koning-A dark horse but....Probably won't be there.

We just don't have that player with leadership qualities- in their early to mid-twenties and not a fringe player.
If someone like Haynes was 10 years younger maybe.
But for now it looks like Weitering.
Question is can he outlast Cripps?

Weitering, make the change this preseason. Hewett/SOS as his VCs. Reward form and leadership.
Curnow cant string two effective words together and his current on field performances barely warrant him a game IMO (playing on reputation ATM).
Harry is not leadership material onfield, off field his professionalism and diligence in making himself better sure.
TDK will be a StK.
2021-Pi$$ or get off the pot

Nic newman would have been another.

Ollie hollands is showing signs he could make a good leader.

Adam Cerra might he another (he does speak eloquently).

You know a few people come across as many children or not leadership material and then surprise people.

Tex walker
James Sicily.
Max gawn.

Sometimes thrusting people into these roles will make them grow.   I reckon fev may have needed captaincy to kick on and mature back then.  For a club where we were he was dedicated enough.  Bit selfish though.

Still, you just never know.  On paper Murphy was a captain. In practise....

Respectfully Thry, Sicily IMO should not be Haw's captain. He is a petulant man child whose attitude stinks from an outsider looking in. Of course they know better but it wouldnt surprise me if a change is made with him. As for the others, your point is spot on.

I hought about Newman
He's the kind of player you're looking for and has been spending a bit of time on the coaching bench while injured.
But he'll be 32 next year so is older than both Cripps and Weitering.
Hollands...yep, possibly but would still be a couple of years away.
Cerra fits the age profile and is a definite top 22

Interesting that so few jump out as obvious leaders, all things considered. The ones you'd seriously look at are too old!

During our poor efforts of the past two weeks, the bloke who stood out as an on-field leader was Nick Haynes!

Walshy stands out but will his body hold up?
Only our ruthless best, from Board to bootstudders will get us no. 17

Not politically correct, too much to say to the coaches,  too popular with the younger players and not a fan of a hierarchal dressing room...🤫
Over at Bont world it must run a bit different...😐

When the question was posed, i did a bit of a mental run down the list (knowing i looked at the age profile just yesterday for you) and i went past all the 25 and over players for 1 reason or another and ended up stopping at Ollie Hollands.

Not sure how soon he (or anyone) may be called upon to step up into that captains role, but if you want a bloke that busts his gut and stands up for teammates unconditionally, you'd struggle to find someone better than Ollie.

He has become a topline defensive powerful mid who hits the scoreboard. Kicked 21 goals to this point (only 4 behinds).

Be great if we can snare someone like that in the offseason...... hang on a minute.

Fans still can't tell me with any valid justification, who it is Kennedy displaces out of our four frontline Mids, Cripps, Walsh, Cerra or Hewett.?

Because that's the reality, he wanted more midfield time and he was clearly in 5th place at our club, maybe with the arrival of Jagga they thought he was going to be 6th!

At the Dogs he's either starting Mid or lining up at CHF, he wasn't going to get either gig at Carlton!

For me I think Jack would be super.  What about a joint Jack and Cerra?

Offer TDK VC.

Maybe Weiters, he’s a great speaker but I can’t help but wonder if he’s looking much more into the future into a career at the top of the AFL. He seems extremely intelligent to me.
