AFL Rd 19 2025 Post Game Prognostications Carlton vs Melbourne

Hopefully, I'll be back not too long after the game is over to put in my 2 cents worth.

While I'm not a fan of May, is there was ever a football act accident, that was it.

Moir - why have they not given him more senior games ?? Showed enough to suggest he will become a handy player, just needs to back it up next week and the week after etc.

Weitering was very good tonite, maybe that had something to do with teaching O'Farrell some of the finer points of defence ??

Pittonet was also very good (and that is something I don't write very often), however, apart from that huge grab, TDK did very little.

Cowan, he's got that 'dog with a bone' approach back again and we are all the better for it.

Carroll did some good things & snagged a goal.

White is a VFL player only, despite Evans showing he has eyes only for the ball and paid an awful penalty, he is well out of his depth at AFL level.

I nearly fell off my couch when I saw Curnow chase and lay a tackle, maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel, his set shot bomb at the end was superb, he needs to get rid of that low percentage kick across the body rubbish too.

They have to persist with O'Farrell, although he is stil light and can get pushed of the ball by the bigger bodies, he has shown enough to warrant senior selection for the remainder of the season and that will also help his development.

Fogarty continues to go goal-less with his 11 touch game, I've run out of patience with this guy.

I really felt we were going to get pipped on the bell, they were swarming late and only were close enough to pinch it, to our guys credit, they played the percentages perfectly for the lastr 3-mins and were able to hold on to that 10-point lead.

A fair bit to like and a fair bit to dislike, the main one being that third quarter fade which allowed them to whittle away what was a resonable lead in a low scoring match.

Good 4 quarter effort.  Re moir.  He got a chance against Collingwood and gave us as close to his impersonation of the invisible man as possible.

Then he had a prolific performance against North Melbourne's vfl side and jumped into the ones and has been in ever since.

The win showed some grit.  Good effort.   Possibly the first time weve done 4 quarters all season but just goes to show what happens when you take your chances.

Enjoyable game to watch live - I was proud of the effort and sustained interest! Watching the young kids each do something for the team and their own careers was the big highlight for me.

Hopefully H returns.
If we expect Moir to kick four goals every game then we are in trouble and I rate him highly.
Moir will develop into a 12-15 possession 1.5 goal per season type player
Melbourne are a crap outfit and all those free kicks helped us.

Moir - why have they not given him more senior games ?? Showed enough to suggest he will become a handy player, just needs to back it up next week and the week after etc.
Moir's fitness was coming from a long way back. It has taken some time to get the kms into his legs. He still needs to work on his body strength, but on the ABC tonight, Weitering claimed that Moir was an excellent trainer. I still think he has considerable improvement in him yet, but he did show he has a future. I really liked that.
The question now becomes, do we give Lemmey a game or three to see if he has what it takes?
According to the injury list, H should be back in 2 weeks. Once he is back, Lemmey will not feature.

We had 10 of our best unavailable tonight; they had 3. Does that tell us where the various futures of the 2 clubs lay? Certainly, their game depends on Gawn's dominance. Without it, or Pickett, and they are looking very vulnerable.

Weitering was very good tonite, maybe that had something to do with teaching O'Farrell some of the finer points of defence ??
Again, on the interview for ABC radio, Weitering was talking about that. He referred to it as 'paying it forward', as he got tutoring from good players in the past. I like that; it has quite a Heinleinian ring to it.
Certainly, tonight you could tell that Weitering was back to something like normal fitness. He took on Melksham and gave him a football lesson; 11 possessions, but 9 of them were intercept possessions, as were 6 of his 8 marks. Then there was the way he strangled Melksham and punched the ball away. Weitering had a big night, and a big influence over the result.

Pittonet was also very good (and that is something I don't write very often), however, apart from that huge grab, TDK did very little.
Pitto was good tonight. Gawn beat him, he had a lot more taps, but he didn't influence the game like he could. Gawn had 19 possessions to Pitto's 8, but he couldn't dominate. That was a win for Pitto.

Cowan, he's got that 'dog with a bone' approach back again and we are all the better for it.
This was probably Cowan's most complete game. Not only is he tenacious, which I love, but he took some really important marks tonight, a couple of absolute rippers. He broke tackles and he broke up Melbourne's forward flow. I was really pleased with Cowan.

Carroll did some good things & snagged a goal.
Carroll is a youngster very much with a youngster's body. He needs to put on 5 to 10 kgs of muscles. However, he kept putting in tonight; a couple of his kicks were brilliant. It will probably be 2027 before he is physically ready, but we know he has the heart to be ready. Now we just have to develop him properly.
I loved his goal and the response from the other players.

White is a VFL player only, despite Evans showing he has eyes only for the ball and paid an awful penalty, he is well out of his depth at AFL level.
I probably wouldn't have selected White this week; his form in the VFL hasn't been that good. He was better last year. However, he was another one who put in and did some nice things when it mattered. That was the difference tonight; when it mattered, guys stood up. That hasn't been the case over much of this year.
Frank the Tank was probably enjoying his most effective game for us (that doesn't say a lot, but...) when May took him out. He won't be available next week, and will probably have to come back via the VFL. For once, his kicking for goal was good; his goal was excellent, and he was looking dangerous (and that hadn't happened before). I don't think he has a future, but he was another who can be pleased with his game (if he remembers any of it).
As for May, Melbourne are going to be missing him for 4 weeks.

I nearly fell off my couch when I saw Curnow chase and lay a tackle, maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel, his set shot bomb at the end was superb, he needs to get rid of that low percentage kick across the body rubbish too.
Charlie is a confidence and kicking the early goal was just what he needed. He had 15 possessions and 8 marks, which shows he wasn't bad at all. That final goal is the one we want him to replicate, week in, week out.
He had 18 possessions and 10 marks a couple of weeks ago, but 0 goals. That little confidence was the difference.
That said, Charlie will be better when H is back, as H will attract a lot of the attention Charlie has been fielding. I think it was also the first time for the year that Charlie has kicked a goal after half time.
I loved the chase and tackle, we really needed something like that. Now, to see more of it.
The other things that shows that Charlie is nowhere near his best (fitness wise or otherwise) is that he isn't getting goals on the ground. When he is playing well, he is dangerous because he doesn't have to get marks to kick goals. I don't think Charlie has kicked one this year that didn't come from a mark or free (and there have been damned few frees),

They have to persist with O'Farrell, although he is stil light and can get pushed of the ball by the bigger bodies, he has shown enough to warrant senior selection for the remainder of the season and that will also help his development.
Like Carroll, HOF's body isn't ready for senior football; he gets pushed around far too easily. But he shows more a little. He has a huge leap on him. He will take mark of the year some day.

Fogarty continues to go goal-less with his 11 touch game, I've run out of patience with this guy.
I think Fog has to go. He doesn't hit the scoreboard. I think he was gone a couple of years back, but his work rate and pressure won him a place. He isn't having the same effect at the moment and he doesn't get to the right places often enough. When we have some better small forwards, Fog is toast.

I really felt we were going to get pipped on the bell, they were swarming late and only were close enough to pinch it, to our guys credit, they played the percentages perfectly for the lastr 3-mins and were able to hold on to that 10-point lead.
Indeed, we showed a lot more poise in the last quarter than we have for most of this year. Even Tom de Koning, who wasn't having a great night, came to the party with a spectacular mark. Nor was he alone. And we managed to earn frees because we wanted the ball. Got to like that.

A fair bit to like and a fair bit to dislike, the main one being that third quarter fade which allowed them to whittle away what was a reasonable lead in a low scoring match.
Indeed, I don't think we've won a 3rd quarter all year, but we seem to be doing something in the last. Small steps.

To be honest, before the game I didn't think we had enough talent or desire to shut down their good players. We are lacking 10 top liners, after all, even though Essendon are getting all the benefit for injuries hurting them.
I love the way Carroll, Cowan and Moir really put their hands up.
Flynn Young didn't do a lot, but his goal was brilliant. 1 goal 2: he turns that around and he might have a future.

Melbourne have really flown under the radar with Carlton and Essendon grabbing the headlines for not winning, but that are below both Carlton and Essendon on the ladder, without having the injury issues. That must be frightening for them.
At the moment, if Gawn doesn't dominate, they don't win and Gawn is no spring chicken. Nor do they seem to have the players coming up to replace their stars. Their forward football is as bad as ours, without any of the excuses that we have.
I would not be surprised to see Melbourne in the media a lot this week; they deserve to be.

Can we bring the same level of commitment against Hawthorn on Thursday night? I doubt it: Hawthorn's delivery can be elite.
I hate Thursday night football, as I can't get to the games. But we haven't won one this year yet.

After a pretty quiet year by his standards, Patrick Cripps really stood up tonight: 29 possessions, the best on the ground. He was particularly up for that last quarter. 5 tackles and 8 clearances was Cripps-like!
However, he was only Carlton player in the top 11 possession getters!

The pleasing things tonight...
A couple of players who I suspect have been carrying injuries looked much better.
Charlie, Cripps and Weitering all played well.
Charlie in particular over the last two weeks has improved and looks much more free in his movement.

Younger players stood up and started to show they have a future. Moir, Carroll and especially Cowan (who should never play VFL again.) ;)

The most important thing for me.....

If there are rifts between the playing group they weren't on display tonight.
Apart from one angry look from Weitering :D when someone obviously didn't play their role... the players looked united, and all celebrated good efforts, especially goals.

A turning point, or just a release of the pressure valve for a week?
The next three weeks aren't easy and we could be back to 'doom and gloom' by the end of it, but hopefully the players might just have got a taste for what it feels like to win a game again, and go after a few more of those.

Charlie may have finally learned one of the oldest maxims in football - the harder you work, the luckier you get.  He worked his backside off last night, and I think it had a real effect on those around him.

Moir is a finisher (apart from his clanger in the last).  He only needs 8 kicks a game to have a real influence, and will be even better once he learns a bit more about forward craft.  I can see him developing into an Izak Rankine type.

Carroll is starting to learn that his left foot can be a weapon.  Between he and Cowan, there is finally some serious kicking power coming out of our back half.  They need to trust their ability to run with the ball to make it even more potent.

Nice to hear the song at the end of the game as well as the beginning.......

This is now the longest premiership drought in the history of the Carlton Football Club - more evidence of climate change?

I want to give our cheer squad and fans a bit of a clip.  I was sitting ponsford stand end and they were so quiet they were almost inaudible.  Also Saturday night to only get 40k at the G (a generous 40k at that) isnt good enough and there was plenty of Melbourne colours in the MCC which means only one third of our membership base pulled their finger out in a very winnable game.

Sure, we arent going well, and its easier to stay home when its cold, but the club needs us, the players will see a more empty crowd and feel differently about us too, but one of my other clubs has a saying (in greek).  Olympiakos when its easy, Legendary when its difficult.  They are nicknamed the legend, so I suppose it should be Carlton when its easy, Blue Baggers in the hard times.

Despite the inappropriate translation, the sentiment is precise.  Its easy to be a fair weather supporter, and we need to show that we deserve the big show and the big stage as much as the team does.
