VFL B & F 2025

The VFL don't have a name for their B&F as yet, not in this new iteration. But that will change in time.
Anyway, Ethan Phillips won with 159 votes. Darcy Hogg was second, with 106 votes. Harry Lemmey was 3rd with 89.

Best and Fairest – Ethan Phillips (159 votes)
Runner-up – Darcy Hogg (106 votes)
Third place – Harry Lemmey (89 votes)

Best Young Player – Darcy Hogg
Best Clubman – Heath Ramshaw
Coaches Award – Flynn Riley
Players' Player of the Year – Ethan Phillips

What does this tell us? I'm not sure, as guys who do well here don't always remain with us. Harry Lemmey, for example, has already been delisted.

I'm hoping Darcy Hogg gets a chance to train on, like Will White and others have in recent times. He is small, but he is larger than Tyson Gresham.

Phillips must also be some chance to get a go, as we will need an extra defender until Dean and O'Farrell are ready.

A lot of the placings depend on number of games played.
And given none of the top 3 were eligible for promotion or in Lemmey's case didn't get the opportunity that was probably a determining factor.

In Phillips case he still falls under the 'delisted free agent' category so we can just add him if the recruiters feel that way inclined.

I was really keen on Flynn Riley who has played some good games this year....But I read an observation that actually rings a bit true.... "Flynn doesn't jump" and it's essentially correct.
It's usually body on body in the ruck contests.
Now that could be a disadvantage if they change the ruck rules...still he might be worth a rookie spot.

Lemmey is young enough to make it still.  Weve had talls before.  They uaually kick on.  I think lemmey is going largely because he developing physically but not really showing improvement in his game.
Lemmeys issue for mine was more the trend and what happened to weitering vs liam mcmahon.

Lemmey is the same player in essence as liam.

If they can run and jump at it, they will take a mark, and if they mark it finish well.  They will offer a ruck option without competing well in it, because they have the size but forget second efforts.

Here are his stats.

 https://vfl.aflmstats.com/player/Harry_Lemmey

60 goals 38 across 3 years at vfl where he monstored undersized opposition.  When he had an opponent that was able to compete with him he would offer a contest but lose more than win.

4th year players need to show that they are afl competitive at worst.  The consistency they can find in their game later.  So it makes sense that lemmey isnt being retained.  Denver grainger barrass recruited as a defender was arguably a better key forward at times than lemmey against better opponents this season.  Hes available for us if we want him and he's likely to hit higher heights than lemmey.

From what ive seen of DGB his biggest issue is confidence.  One bad error would snowball into more mistakes.  Thats not about capability but confidence.

The biggest jump between VFL and AFL is for KPPs, VFL Mids aren't that far off AFL Mids in terms of run and aerobic capacity, but it's the increased size, strength and agility of AFL big bodies that is the biggest difference.

A lot of VFL "big blokes" are what we might call tall skinnies, they look massive relative to others, but they look like twigs next to a Nankervis, Gawn, May or Weiters.

And for Lemmey, much as it was with Meat before him, being dominant at VFL won't deliver you dominance in AFL. You need a whole other level of aggression and strength.

I often think back to Enright's hit on Warnock, do you think Enright would clean up Nankervis, Gawn, Darcy, et al., do you think he'd even try? That's the problem with having a big bloke who is relatively "timid" trying to be a dominant KPP at AFL level, if they aren't aggressive they are victims.

Flynn Riley may be someone they might bring in as a rookie to develop.  We obviously now need an additional ruckman. Lemmey is an interesting one. I am a big supporter of having big guys who can run, kick and jump. With a couple of first round compensation for free agency we will probably look at picking a forward ruckman type player. I am not sure there is a spot for Darcy Hogg no matter how much I would like there to be.

Same limitations that he arrived with.
