Stabbings have decreased by 11% since the machete ban.  Who’d have thunk it?

The bad news is that there’s been an increase in knife crime involving youngsters 🙁

A better example of correlation vs cause you wont find.

What’s the overall trend in “wounding crime “ with any kind of sharp weapon? I would be looking at banning the carrying of anything that could be used as a dangerous weapon in public. Careful definition would of course be necessary eg the carrying of tools etc would need to be accommodated.
Reality always wins in the end.

What's the trend of these little turds getting arrested, released with a feather duster on the wrist (not even a slap these days) and re-offending?
2021-Pi$$ or get off the pot
2022- Real Deal or more of the same? 0.6%
2023- "Raise the Standard" - M. Voss Another year wasted Bar Set
2024-Back to the drawing boardNo excuses, its time
2025-Carlton can win the 2025 AFL Premiership

It's a legitimate question, but I'd assert the wrong people are being asked the question.

It's almost like the courts which are full of lawyers spend all day finding loopholes in the laws to set the multiple offending teens free!

I know of one person working on the inside that will tell you it's deliberate, because they think the evidence is clear, the more time the worst kids spend inside the system the more likely it is they become career criminals. But I'm not sure this isn't a confusion of cause and effect, and a consequence of lawyers, welfare and other legal types talking themselves into a corner.

Australia is a big place, maybe it's time to have some sort of remote national service camp for these kids, and put their natural talents to work in Iran or Afghanistan! Of course some will be horrified at the suggestion, but the there there there it'll all be right you are forgiven is clearly failing.

My wife has been saying this for about 5 years. My issue with it is we will be giving these dirt bags specialist training to be highly skilled DH's.

Career criminals, maybe.

But if they get out and keep offending, they go back behind bars.

IF they are out and keep offending....what have we gained?

Better to lock them up and make the community safer in the short term at least.

Institutions can be schools of crime.
The kids make contacts and meet up after release.
They talk about their crimes and contacts.
We had strict rule in school that talking about their offences was not allowed.
We used to joke a bit about the opportunities that we were giving them in terms of the education and sporting programs suggesting we were developing a bigger, stronger, smarter young offender.
I'd still like to believe we did make some differences and I have to say that many of those I met after they'd left the institutions had some pretty positive stories to tell.
Of course there was also the ones you read about in the papers that weren't so positive.

I'm also a big supporter of alternatives to institutions like some type of 'bush/farm' school.
They've been tried in the past.
But you have to be really careful with those types of experiments and ensure the right staffing and controls or you can end up with a bit of a horror show.

Ill just say this. Back in the day, crims and louts had a morsel of respect for the general public, coppers and those affected by their crimes. I read the odd true crime book and Ive often read of crime having respect for certain coppers and what not. Today, these young kids, organised crime gangs and violent offenders in general have zero respect or care for human life. They will tear their target to pieces without batting an eyelid and dont care what collateral damage the take along the way. Youths/Kids of today play life like a video game. My wife, a school teacher, has again been saying for years that kids are desensitised to violence through gaming. The things she hears primary school kids talking about these days is horrifying. It's not easy to protect lives, prevent crimes  and enforce laws these days  because the crims (mainly young ones) simply dont give a fark about anything.

That issue with younger ones you have the chance to sort out, but only if you stop releasing the teens.

I know some Vicpol people who can predict the crimes coming over the next week or two by who was bailed this week, it's a merry-go-round.

They arrest these kids so often, they now know who it was just from the description of the event, they do not even need a description of the perpetrator, it's just rinse and repeat.
