I missed this one which again just shows how common it is these days.

See i reckon this stuff was common back in the day, the coverage wasn't there.

Depends on which day, but I do remember carrying trolley poles in our bags in case of emergency.

Something else to consider.  Melbourne is nudging 6 million people.  A greater number of incidents doesnt mean a statistical rise in incident per capita which is the only objective measure of safer now or safer then.  

Example.  Which society is safer?
A population of 6 million with 200000 crimes committed per year?  Or a population of 2 million million with 75000 crimes per year?

You'll hear more crime in the population of 6 million reported more frequently, but its still safer than thr alternative.

I listened to an interesting if depressing discussion of child sex abuse on the wireless this morning.  Some of the key points:

One in four children experience sexual abuse.

One in ten adult men admit to having sexual feelings about children.

While most abused children don’t go on to commit sex crimes, the rate of sex crime offending was 11% higher among confirmed abused children than a control group without sexual abuse.

Programs to raise awareness of child sexual abuse are being condemned as “woke” by some politicians.

Only a relatively small percentage of child sex abuse occurs in institutions; most is committed within families or by close friends.  While working with children checks may help to reduce institutional child sex abuse, they do nothing to prevent the vast majority of cases.

That typifies the problem, and is relevant to other crime; there’s a limited bucket of money with competing demands, and governments often choose the more obvious but less effective options.

Obviously, the justice system can’t deal with one in ten adult males, so how do we ensure that they don’t go on to offend?

There was a recent example in a nearby school where a teacher was stood down because of child sexual abuse claims.
These claims were from previous schools they worked at.
It was implied that everytime an issue was raised, they were moved onto another school and it was swept under the carpet.

A working with children check doesn't always work.....or it appears that someone who gets one, may still transgress after the fact with no scope to catch them out from then on.

A teacher at my wife's primary school has just been charged with stalking after a 6 month investigation where he was stood down. The Principle had to call him every week to check in on him to make sure he was okay.
2012 HAPPENED!!!!!!!
