The AFP commissioner said that they are charging close to one person every week with threatening a Commonwealth politician.  I suspect that many are keyboard warriors with no means or intention of actually carrying out their threat, but that's not the point.  Politicians of all persuasions should be be able to represent their constituents without having to worry about their safety.

Any number of factors may be motivating those making threats but I can't help but think that the language politicians use about each other, and the language that public figures use about politicians, plays a significant role.  For example, Lib MP Angie Bell recently said that Anne Aly and Anthony Albanese "should be shamed and stoned in the square.” Anne Aly subsequently revealed that she has had 19 death threats this week.  Then there's Alan Jones advocating for Julia Gillard and Bob Brown to be placed in a "chaff bag" and dumped "as far out to sea as they can".  All sides of politics are guilty of inappropriate language and threatening, demeaning language against female politicians is being used all around the world.

It's time that our politicians took a stand and eliminated violent, threatening and demeaning language from political discourse.

The issue lies not with the everyday run-of-the mill citizen who are able to make the distinction between the radical nonsense and ridiculous suggestions
The problem comes when the extreme messages get taken up by those suffering from a mental issue or extremist views and are then acted upon.
Sometimes it only takes a sideways glance or comment to trigger that behaviour.

The ears pricked up when it was revealed that 'anti-terror' personnel were involved in the investigation of the Haines incident.
Terrorism?

It turns out that one explanation may be that at some point a 'once fan', most likely suffering from mental health isssues, has been put off by a comment, perhaps even in a private conversation or message, and that has triggered him to the extent that he carried out the offence.

The alleged offender's parent's have suggested a long term friendship with Helen Haines. At the very least they were acquainted...and that would probably have extended to their son. They reportedly appeared have at one time shared similar views on a number of social and environmental issues

The extent of any realtionship, motives and the mental health of the offender will be for the courts to decide...but  it does remain that the events are almost always the result of inflammatory messaging that sets off the 'not right-minded' to act aggressively.

Latest update on Helen Haines is pretty bad : she's lost one leg and surgeons are fighting to save the other leg. She remains in a critical condition.
She has indeed lost her second leg, just reported on the news. Awful, just awful.
2022- Real Deal or more of the same? 0.6%
2023- "Raise the Standard" - M. Voss Another year wasted Bar Set
2024-Back to the drawing boardNo excuses, its time
2025-Carlton can win the 2025 AFL Premiership
2026-Slow start, we can kick after all, why not?

Absolutely terrible ... and she's still in a critical condition  :(

They reported that she was doing better after the second limb was removed.

Its beyond awful and never thought our once safe country would ever see crimes like this.

Hopefully we can turn it around.

This is just the latest blow in the war against women that has been a part of our culture since the arrival of the first fleet.  If you don’t understand that, you must have your head in the sand 🙁

Not sure on what basis you determine that view but according to the accused x profile, its very clear what his views were and what made this one tick.  I see his representation is trying their luck with the MH card.

Despicable action who deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars yet if the latest sentence of one of the perpetrators for Ethan Hoac is any guide he will be out in no time.

Ethan was randomly attacked by a western suburbs gang first hitting him with a car and then he was stabbed 30 times to death. One of the convicted killers was just sentenced to 17 years. They took potentially 70 years of life and received 17 for the act.

The state of our judicial system like several other things in our state is broken and why the majority have had enough of the talk without actions.

Ben Carroll election promise to slash hospital waiting times injecting 1.2B in funding.

Labour has had 12 years to fix this so attempting to buy votes using it as an election promise won't work this time.

Those billions lost to corruption with the unions would be especially handy to fix essential services.

6 weeks to go before this corrupt bunch are out the door.

Dont hold your breath Shawny. Voters in this state seem to be gluttons for punishment.

I've no skin in the game in terms of the upcoming election, living interstate.
I think it's going to be a fascinating watch though.

Just from afar it seems more a case of one side looking like losing-tired and worn out, past their use by date... rather than an enthusiasm for a new group to take over.
I'm curious to see the extent of the One Nation vote and how that translates to any great extent into seats.
It could be a future defining election for them.
They need to keep their current momentum because once it starts to decline, that will be the end of the road for them.

Popcorn is ready. ;)

Victoria is losing their minds and the rational outcome (whatever the collective perceive that to be) is far from guaranteed.

I'm not even sure what date the election is for, but so far i've only seem one group campaigning for votes in person, albeit on the side of the road, and that was one-nation. Complete with the professional oversized mugshots within the orange border, just like you see on election day.

I've never seen that before, from one nation, but they are getting in early and going hard.

Despite all of this, my gut feel is that one nation is a lot bigger in the northern states.

Hanson's natural habitat is the gutter, and she is IMO, clearly trying to drag both parties down to her level, where she has a clear advantage. Disguising her crude attacks on Lambie, Wong and others as poor taste humour, freedom of speech etc is laughable.

The only poll that has proved to be almost as reliable as the one on election day is Roy Morgan Research.  They are saying that preferences will be vital with a significant number of electors declaring that they will not preference PHON under any circumstances.  That could mean L-NP, ALP, Greens or independent candidates winning on preferences.

Victoria has now banned the upper house group voting tickets so there won't be any miraculous fringe party victories.  Morgan research has the Legislative Council going:

L-NP 12
ALP  10
Greens  8
PHON  6
Undecided  4

There's still a way to go but, at this stage, a minority government with a hostile upper house could be likely.

Plenty of campaigning happening down here on the Bellarine but no sign of PHON so far.
