Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Daisy ready for 2015
Just by looking at him Thomas looks so much fitter this year.

He had some love handles last year - this years' version just looks lean and trim.

Casboult looks like he's built right up. This year he's really got to produce.

Tutt 3rd in the time trial.

A guy that fast should not have endurance as good as that. Very positive.

We had played last year 3 men down with Bootsma, Duigan and Scotland all gone by round 5. Truckloads of surgery. No Judd / Kreuzer. A lot of doom and gloom. This season has a totally different feel at this stage.

So glad we underachieved last year. The club finally got serious about the number of players we had to turn over.

The list looks in so much better shape- both in players and fitness.

You would have swapped pick 7 for Jaksch and pick 19?  :o :o :o

Glad that wasn't the club's opinion....

I think the club wanted Brokebeers at pick #7, knew he would drop all the way to pick #19 so decided to cash on on that. At least we don't have to listen to development excuses for him next season as he idea is he's ready made to go. Obviously he doesn't have to kill it, but needs to cement a spot in the side.

I think the pressure will be on Boakhurst. The club targeted him as a more mature player who could make an immediate impact. Pressure will definitely be on.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Re: R23 - Carlton v Essendon- Like Dancing with your Drug Crazed Ugly Stepsister
I saw a bit of that game. Where is Bell at by the way?

He's not that quick, he doesn't lay enough tackles or get enough possessions. If he's getting a game the team are not going that well.

He needs to sharpen up his disposal and start impacting games a lot more as he's at an age where he'll be under pressure at the end of next season.

Re. Brock - I admire his ability to make an impact. He was one of our best vs. Essendon. Work rate off the ball phenomenal. But just couldn't hurt the opposition as he had no pace. We'll miss his disposal count but not his defensive running.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Covering Our Forwards
I just want to emphasise that Waite was rated 4th in the entire AFL for contested marks per game and 9th in the AFL for marks inside 50.

While the second statistic is more about delivery and the form of players up the field, contested marking is an ability that is worth its weight in gold.

I reckon Casboult is the only one of our forwards with the potential to get close to Waite's contested marking.

Along side that you have to put in that he was only 31st in the league for goals per game.

Also - his loss would have been a loss if we'd have traded him or not. Being that he's injury prone and 30+ he's all but retired.

It's difficult to see all of our unproven quantities up forward can cover the loss of Waite, Betts and Garlett.

I think we need Walker settled at full forward as he's as close to a proven quantity as we've got.

At the moment we've just got to cross our fingers that one of that large group of new forwards will come good.

Tutt, Jaksch, Foster, Jones, Smith, etc. - surely a couple of those guys will grab their opportunity.

I'm hoping for a lot from Casboult, Menzel and Walker too. As long as we don't play Ellard as our first choice crumbing forward I'll be happy.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Covering Our Forwards
Watched our R18 game versus the Roos on Fox and it was clear to me why they made such a big play for Waite. When He's on he's almost unstoppable.

That's my fear, not that he performs for someone else, just that who can do that job for us now?

The whole forward line will have to operate differently. Jones, or whoever takes the third banana role, is unlikely to take those one out marks with close coverage. Some of Waites work in that regard cannot be duplicated.

We'll need more entries and far more back back up once the ball gets in there.

Talking to a Kangas mate of mine - they have a history of trading for players who play their one good game for the year against the roos.

Higgins also played a really good game against the roos apparently.

Waite was good but lets be honest - he did play VFL last year. This would be his last year - 2nd last absolute best case.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rnd 1/Best 22 2015
This has become a bit of a pick on Curnow session.

He's alright for a rookie who cost us nothing and is a pretty good tagger.

I'd imagine he'd be in the best 22 right now as Malthouse does seem to like locking down a player or 5 from the opposition. Though he never used to do that at Collingwood.

Back to the best 22 - I think the midfield lacks depth bigtime, the backline actually looks pretty decent but the forward line is full of unproven quantities. Waite, Betts and Garlett are all gone. That makes it tough. Replacements all have potential but we've got a solid history of taking potential and setting fire to it.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rnd 1/Best 22 2015
Why did we get Tutt, Dick, Smith, Boakhorst, etc?

Why did the recruitment manager state that he was under instruction to address the need for outside speed?

We played Curnow, Brock, Bell, Ellard, Carrazzo, etc. all in the same team last year. And it cost us.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Hits & Misses 2014
Hits:
Successfully targeting Docherty / Jaksch
Trigg - has impressed me so far (particularly his talk around recruitment)
Lowering the avg age of the list

Misses:
Warnock
Losing every close game
Prez - Happy if he turns out to be good but the early signs could not be much worse. Something is just NQR at board level.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Rnd 1/Best 22 2015
B   Dylan Buckley   Michael Jamison   Sam Rowe
HB   Kade Simpson   Lachie Henderson   Chris Yarran
C   Dale Thomas   Bryce Gibbs   Mark Whiley
HF   Levi Casboult   Liam Jones   Jason Tutt
F   Troy Menzel   Andrew Walker   Kristian Jaksch
R   Matthew Kreuzer   Marc Murphy   Chris Judd
IC   Clem Smith   Blaine Boakhorst   Andrejs Everitt
   Zach Tuohy

Premium on pace with Smith, Boakhorst, Tutt and Whiley have to be given priority over Carrazzo, Ellard, Bell and Cripps, etc. to start the season.

Everitt, Touhy and Jaksch are probably borderline selections with around 15 players pushing for those 3 spots.

Looking at this team compared to the one that ran Geelong close in round 21 -

OUT:

Brock McLean (slow)
Andrew Carrazzo (slow)
David Ellard (slow)
Dennis Armfield
Jarrad Waite (slow)
Cameron Wood (slow)
Nick Graham (slow)
Sam Docherty (slow)
Tom Bell (slow)
Ed Curnow (slow)
Ciaran Sheehan

9 slow.

IN:

Lachie Henderson
Clem Smith (fast)
Matthew Kreuzer
Blaine Boakhorst (fast)
Jason Tutt (fast)
Liam Jones (fast)
Mark Whiley (fast)
Andrew Walker (fast)
Kristian Jaksch
Andrejs Everitt
Dylan Buckley (fast)

Turnover of half the team - including 7 genuinely fast players coming in.

Walker in his advancing years should now be left at full forward as he is clearly our best/only full forward. Likewise Henderson is our best CHB and needs to be left there for the full year. Swingmen are desperation stuff. If Rowe can be left on the 3rd opposition fwd I think it could benefit the team in a big way.

Tutt and Smith coming into the forward half along with Walker and 3 genuine talls plus Menzel gives us something the opposition really won't like dealing with. Looks more interesting than Ellard/Waite/etc.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Daisy '15
I thought his season last year was pretty typical of a guy coming off no preseason.

Pretty slow to start off but pretty steady rate of improvement towards the end.

I cut him more slack than most because I think he's a pretty good kick and goes in really hard at the ball/tackle. 2 things which should be a minimum for all our players but somehow seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

I agree though - will be a big year for him - particularly re. injuries.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Carlton's Ball Butchers
Drafting is all about beep tests, repeat sprints, vertical leaps, etc. None of that matters if you can't kick. Recruiters still do not recruit that way.

We'll "develop" their kicking skills... just like we did with Kane Lucas who I'm sure had a fantastic beep test.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Round 1 2015
B: Sheehan, Rowe, Jamison
Hb: Tuohy, Jaksch, Simpson
C: Yarran, Gibbs, Everitt
Hf: Walker, Henderson, Thomas
F: Menzel, Jones, Casboult
Foll: Wood, Murphy
Rov: Carrazzo
I/c: Buckley, Curnow, Docherty, Judd
Emerg: Cripps, Graham, Whiley

*Decent pre-seasons and games from the 3 emergencies would hopefully push them ahead of some others.

Agree with that lineup Pratty for the most part.
- If Kreuzer is fit and firing he should be our no.1 as Casboult has to be in the side for his contested marking is invaluable.
- Carrazzo will struggle to get in the team next year for mine  love him though and we need more players with his passion for the club.
- Hope to god we play Walker forward as well and that lineup is pretty good if you ask me, just becomes between the ears issue.

Hope Whiley or Cripps does enough to force out Carrazzo or Curnow. I don't rate Graham. Not quick enough or committed to any defensive work. Also disposal is variable.
