He played on the ball effectively all last week and played his best game for ages. But his relative lack of physicality did tell: he still gets out-bodied too easily. Early in the year he was mooted as spending more time on the ball and less up forward. Things didn't work out that way, but maybe we are seeing a glimpse of the future?
Jones at least demonstrated that he does have something to offer down back, he outread his opponent when the ball was in the air twice in the third Q and marked nicely. It would seem that we have another two years to see if he can produce that sort of thing with any regularity.
It was my sons birthday last week, so I'm coming down for the game this week. The last time I took him to the G it was the last game of the season against collingwood (2004 I think) and we got up by a point. Him, me and my old man who has since passed away, sung ourselves hoarse that night... I'm hoping for a repeat...
I think many of us thought that NB. Isn't there a thread about what spuds our assistants are?
My point was about the fact that assistant coaches are closer to the players than the senior coach and that may have enabled Barker to see something in Graham that Malthouse missed.
I wasn't having a crack at you DJC, rather at the group think that inhabits this place at times. We all have opinions, some have several, but we actually know 1/5 of diddly squat, the rest is just chest thumping.
I think there must be a couple of dozen threads bagging our assistants
Good to see that we have some astute judges when it comes to Graham's ability
He has certainly been one of the players to benefit from the change of coach. I suppose that being closer to the players enabled Barker to see what Malthouse was missing.
Anyway, let's hope Graham continues to improve and becomes an integral part of a top class midfield.
Not sold on the coyote, if he fails to get a game and continues to do okay in the twos, that would tell me SOS doesn't rate him.
Some people need to read job descriptions. Is SOS head of recruiting or match committee ?
Edit: SOS is doing an outstanding job at the moment, I've never seen our boots so well studded... Kudos SOS, next week you're in the membership dept...
Ablett is under pressure to resume and has unofficially being labelled a sook for not being able to play with injury...it will either be he is no good and wants to show he is really injured or he will come to play and probably flog us....dont see any inbetween IMO..
Ablett = Judd Could have 12 months off and will return with quality possessions, nothing surer...
A question for the regular NB watchers... Have the NB altered their gameplan ? ie has the Carlton coaching change filtered down ? I was wondering if MM was trying to implement a "standard" playing style across cfc/NB ?
It's great to see the fixture drawers excelling themselves again... Why draw afl and their vfl affiliate to have corresponding bye rounds ?
It's bad for players returning from injury or pressing for senior selection and it's a missed opportunity to get a few bums on seats, as I'm sure that a couple of blues fans would go to the vfl to get a view of some emerging players.
No Ahead of that must come which player offers the most in terms of value to the senior side.
Normally I'm all for rewarding effort.
Had Yarran sulked around in the VFL I'd support him having some more time at the lower level.
But Ellard 23 Yarran 23
Which player is likely to reproduce that at senior level? If we play a similar style of football to last weekend which player is likely to fit better into the senior team?
Yarran is at a really important stage in his Carlton career. How we handle him could be the making or breaking of him as a Carlton player. He appears to be playing angry and frustrated at the moment. That seems to be showing through in his attitude at other times.(punctuality etc)
I understand the reasons for taking a stand and keeping him in the lower grade. It might work.....but he might also drop his bundle in which case he's probably finished as a Carlton player. Fair enough some might say. That's the simple solution...pack him off. We'll get something for him.
But if we play it the other way and promote him and support him through this period, getting him playing with a bit of enthusiasm again, the benefits to us are obvious.
At the end of the day it's really up to the "people managers" at the club and Yarran's own attitude. We can't do much about the latter and we've proven to be pretty hopeless at the managing the "troubled player" side of things.
This is a bit of a test for the club.
I understand what you're saying lods, but I think the more important question with Yarran is WHY he seems to be playing angry... Is it his personal life ? Is/was he dissatisfied with mm/coaching/gameplan ? Is he feeling outcast because Eddie and Jeff aren't here anymore ? Is he playing injured and thus frustrated ? Does he actually want to be somewhere else ?
Depending on if there is a problem and what it is will have a large bearing on what we as a club can do...
