Oh well..............
2 and a bit years of Mick, and I'm back to feeling happy about an honorable loss.
Keeping standards high is a daily battle.
Good last quarter by the boys.
As I said earlier, some more accuracy and..................
Regardless of what happens from here, i think we've seen some clear improvement in our play this week.
Like screw.
The Bombers stopped and we still couldn't finish off.
That performance was certainly no better than anything we've dished up this year, it was just the Bombers were crap.
We can't continue to play Curnow and Carrazzo to play in the same team..... IMO
Much better, apart from that lapse where we let them get 4 unanswered goals. Had their measure a lot of the time and only poor disposal and conversation prevented a win.
We can't continue to play Curnow and Carrazzo to play in the same team..... IMO
Good observation, reckon that's why Curnow was subbed off. And we're one tall too many up forward. When we went smaller with Walks we looked better.
Whiley (if he puts in a good one for the NBs) for Ellard.
Probably will be two or three forced changes with Yazz to get a few his hit, 50-50 re Gibbs on Goddard and Hendo seems to have legs probs and Jammo shoulder probs.
OK we got the frame up....rebuild should be finished by next week ;D
It was the basic skills errors that killed us today, nothing else. Poor kicking at goal or to a team-mate just made it near impossible to win this match. We had the best of the stats but it was hard to know where we were going to take them given we had all of our slow-paced mids in the team.
Tackling was good, Cripps was good, Byrne did some good things, Yarran's whack on Chapman was superb, overall, there was some decent things to finally hang our hat on. The final margin may have flattered us as the Druggies definitely ran out of legs but it was a credit to our players that they sensed the game was still there to be won even when they got out to 41-points in the last.
Bell's undisciplined effort to give away a 50m penalty was just dumb, this is the poor decision-making that I hate from him and which I believe will always hold him back from graduating to being a top-liner. Maybe he will mature ..... maybe ??
I really disliked Gibbs' game (don't start me on those pink boots either), Murphy was marginally better this week (I did see him addressing the whole team which was good) and Casboult did ......... well what did he do exactly ?? Jones..... nah, hasn't got it, never will.
Feel sorry for Wood, he tries hard but had to do it all by himself, the sooner Kreuzer comes back the better.
Looking forward to seeing some of the seconds players come into the team, especially Whiley, because they are the future for us, they are the players who I have genuine excitement & anticipation about.
We all expected to lose badly this week so it was admirable (ie. not embarrassing like in the past) of the players to fight it out and end up with a reasonably close margin.
Looking forward to seeing the newbies, the next draft & trade period and 2016 actually.

While I agree that that cost us the game... I think that we need to drop one of Carrazzo or Curnow.
The midfield was a lot more damaging once Curnow got subbed (and Curnow isn't a crap player)
It just throws the balance out.

Carrazzo is fine, either Ellard or Curnow but not both!
Byrne was the highlight of that game. 100% effective with his kicking (at least I can't remembering him missing a target), showed desperation, and was fast. Wanted to take the game on.
We were rubbish in the second quarter (again), made a minor yelp in the third and were all over them in the fourth. We kick straight we get close to winning.
Thought Cripps game, aside from the misses, was fantastic. His in an under work was excellent and helped us kill the Dons in the clearances. Everitt was also good and again so was Docherty. Also liked Simpsons game. Murphy showed some interest in the last quarter but vanished when we needed a steadying hand in the second. Judd might not have got a chunk of the ball, but he did impact the game.
Curnow needs to be dropped. Ellard kicked in a nice goal but he doesn't set me alight. Thought Army put in four quarters. Tom Bell tried but will always be held back by his lack of skill. Jones contested but that's about it. Casboult the same. Hendo did his best both forward and back. Yazz was lazy but, like Walker, gave us a spark up forward. Walker was good and a welcome return. Rowe played his best game of the season, but still wasn't great. Jamo was OK and seems to be injured. Tooey was good, took some nice marks. Wood isn't good enough.
So, a better effort than the last two weeks but our butchering of the ball and in front of goals is a problem that MM has failed to fix in 3 effin years. With the clearance and contested ball domination we should have won by five goals. But our inability to hit a target killed us every single time.
Mondy
Good points on Curnow and there are a few imbalances currently. We are a bit tall forward too and also back if Henderson plays there along with Jamo and Rowe. Bit of sorting out to come. Not sure how much longer Curnow can keep a spot as he just doesn't do enough with the footy with the few touches he has.
Bit more to like about the side, especially in the last quater where they didn't drop their bundles and it bodes well for next week in so far as they can feel a little more confident.
As to the game, Simpson was very good, Wood rucked well, Cripps did well, despite missing a goal at the end. We are still booting the cover off the thing from half back resulting in easy turnovers. Midfield needs to work harder to provide opportunities across rhe middle so kicks forward can be under less pressure and go about 20 metres deeper. Its a tough ask for forwards to keep the ball in at high half forward.
Shame about Yarran, will probably miss a couple of weeks.
We must have the worst combination of skills and decision making in the league.
Also thought Jones' game was much better
Shame he missed the extra kicks but he presented well and took some nice marks.
We can't continue to play Curnow and Carrazzo to play in the same team..... IMO
Correct 150%
Got home from work in time to watch the 2nd half only.
What has changed in the past 3 or 4 years.....ummmm nothing. We work our a55es off to kick a goal, yet by the next breath we let our opposition score 2 or 3!
Disposal disposal disposal.......we are terrible. Our decision making is not much better. In the 3rd qrt in particular, the amount of times their mids ( Watson time and time again) rather than bomb a ball in long or have a shot at goal themselves ......they'd kick it short to a lead. And every time our defenders were running back toward the goals or were always behind their man.
Our F50 entries were embaressing to watch....continual hope in hell balls with plenty of elevation and no penetration. Easy pickings for Pascoe Vale girls defenders!!
While dissapointed at what was for the most part a terrible performance, at least we were nt pummeled into oblivion like I honestly thought we would be.
Just on Sheehan, I like the boy. Good run, great kick and nice size too. Damn shame MM made him the sub !
Someone earlier mentioned that we were too tall in our Fwd line. I have no problem with our height, it's just that our talls move like glaciers and have no system or understanding of each others games and strengths thats the problem. ( Delivery to them doesnt help!! )
Thought Cripps game, aside from the misses, was fantastic. His in an under work was excellent and helped us kill the Dons in the clearances.
Will have (c) next to his name at some stage. He just seems to have the presence of a leader.

Once his confidence grows, realises he belongs, he seems like the guy who will say "enough is enough" and lead from the front. Liked his game a lot, must play week in week out.
Did anyone notice Ellard revving the boys up at start of the 4th qtr?
Foot skills kill us every week, either field kicking or kicking for goal or both.
We're a bottom 4 side.
Did anyone else suspect Hendo's arms were chopped with that marking attempt with a few minutes to go? Or did he just lose his grip? Clutching at straws here, when desperate for us to get closer.........

yeah.... I saw that.
we got dicked with a few strange decisions in the fourth
Casey's "block"
Hendo's Arm chop
While I agree that that cost us the game... I think that we need to drop one of Carrazzo or Curnow.
Drop both of them !!

Byrne is a beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agree Sheik.
just back from the game. They are both gone. Carazzo was probably gone last year and Curnow doesn't have the speed top keep up anymore.
i see Whiley got 29 possys in the two's, liker you can't wait to get him in.'
Need to re-structure the side. Too many slow players going through the guts. Curnow, Carrazzo and Ellard, we can only play one of those. We want speed but Buckley doesn't play. We did well in contested possession but had no run at all.
Cripps is big and takes a good pack mark. He would be very useful forward with Menzel and Walker. Whiley can take Cripps spot in the guts. Don't need Jones. Like Armfield back in the side. No star but give you pace, aggression and something unusual here, effort!

Nice summary, Mondy.
Love Byrne, already got an old man's man crush on him.
Ellard finds it hard to run out a full four quarters.
I would call Bell into my office if I was coach and ask him if making stupid decisions comes naturally to him, or if he has had to work on it.
Jamo's shoulders are gone and he's protecting them at all costs.
And once again, there were times when we got the ball around the wing or centre,, for example Judd in the first quarter, only to look up and not one of players was up forward to kick to. Judd gets caught holding the ball. I cannot fathom why the instructions from Mick can't be that at all times one forward must stay in the forward 50.
Im at the new carlton social club ..about 1000 members attending...very good ...trigger judge board directors andy and peng southby nicholls attending...
Bar the draw in 2011 it about as close as we've ever been to Essendon in round 3. We had a much easier time playing them lateer in the season.

Jaksch
Menzel
Buckley

are all exciting young players .........let's play them
Casboult to get the 50m arc with Walker when either Kreuzer or Warnock return.
Wood, Curnow, Ellard, Rowe, Tutt are solid VFL players & no more than that!
Just on Sheehan, I like the boy. Good run, great kick and nice size too. Damn shame MM made him the sub !
Even bigger shame he didn't play..... ;)
So in 3 years we kick more goals than points... Oh wait
We don't let teams kick 5 in a row on us.... Oh wait
We form kick long into the forward line to 3 on 1's.... Oh wait
We hustle back from a TO and flood the space in their forward 50... Oh wait
Even bigger shame he didn't play..... ;)
Big Blue saw his two left foot kicks and got confused. :D
Same old turnovers and poor kicking for goal killed us. We won the contested possession and clearances easily I believe.
Was pleased with Cripps' performance - a future star in the making for us IMO. Also Bell, I can't believe I'm saying this, looked a bit better.
Byrne looked promising also, but in limited game time.

Yes, everyone of them must play if you're rebuilding. Might find refreshing the list like that might produce some surprising results. None of these slow tagger through the guts. Carrazzo been a great player for this club but he's gone past it.
i see Whiley got 29 possys in the two's, liker you can't wait to get him in.'
Trust me when I say, Whiley was the major prize in that trade deal, Jaksch was the steak knives !!

Cripps was great and looks very self assured, Byrne is a good colt, nice kicking skills and liked the way he chases.......Bell...well same old same old IMO....not good enough.
Jones and Casboult were next to useless...kudos to Wood...beat Bellchambers and tried hard, ..Touhy was ok, thought Simpson was only average until late in the game.
Muphy tried hard but did do much with the ball.....
Yarran won't be playing for a couple of weeks. Perhaps a chance to bring in Boekhorst to play a similar role of run and carry.
Curnow got the red vest and may get a full game next week in a team that used to be red.
Cripps is displaying the same kind of 'diesel hands' that his highlights video showed. Coming along beautifully.
Loved Armfield being back in the side. He has the never say die attitude that our team has been lacking and i reckon his hand in a goal in the last quarter got the boys up. Has to be in the side next week.
Byrne showed a bit. Nothing really negative to say about him will get some more games, but still needs a run in the 2's to actually get some game time.
All in all a good effort considering the last 2 weeks and a potentially 3 blowout on the cards. Fought it out and dominated the clearances. If only we could kick straight, we'd have 4 points on the board.
I thought Ellard played with a bit of spirit - I liked it.
Whiley in for Curnow.
Really liked Cripps' game
A good set of stats too
22 disposals,
15 contested possessions (equal best for us)
Clearances 5,
inside 50s 6
Tackles 4
one knock is that his disposal efficiency was only 50% but a lot of his disposals were under pressure.
His game time was a little less than the majority of players too
11.18 is just unacceptable given many were absolute sitters. Sav has some work to do. Lots of goal kicking practice this week.
Carlton forwards getting sucked up the ground far too often was either good coaching by Hird or dumb football by our forwards. I assumed Ellard was our key forward for large parts of the 2nd quarter in particular. WTF!?
Ciaran Byrne is a deadset ripper, welcome to a long career son, what a wonderful free spirit he has & is a wonderful kick of the ball. Well done Dennis Armfield for step 1 of saving your career - apart from your first kick of the game which was on-the-full & ending up costing us a goal.....your speed, tenacity & desire at the man and the contest is something that has been sorely missing from this team.
Ed Curnow had an absolute shocker - 3 goals kicked on him, with a lot of flaws exposed. He can't afford to be having shockers like that.
I wouldn't be patting Sam Rowe on the back too much after that performance - how many largely uncontested marks did his direct opponents take? Not good enough Sam.
Judd's last quarter was sublime, but for the team to suddenly find another gear as Essendon tired badly isn't a way to win games of footy. Happy to see Cripps step-up today, although his opponent for most of the day: Watson, taught him a football lesson.
Trust me when I say, Whiley was the major prize in that trade deal, Jaksch was the steak knives !!
If that's the case, if Boekhorst can do something too, pick 7 will be a winner.
Oh - and btw, that horrific interfence/shepherding rule in marking contests will ruin this game. Those 2 decisions that went Essendon's way were absolute howlers.
had to like ess game plan watched it live ,players getting back , pressure on opp,30 m short passes there plan was to smart for us .give there quick players space at 1 stage it was like watching a soccer game ,counted 4 ess def across hbf just waiting so predictable,1 last thing that last quarter effort seen all before (bullcrap).
More contested possessions
More clearances
More shots on goal
and perhaps most importantly
More intensity!
Can't be too pissed off with the results today, even if those stats show that we should've won.
6.11 in the 2nd half cost us 4 points.
Nobody in particular to blame, everyone missed goals they should've kicked.
Come on Sav, do your thing.
Best game so far this year.
Does anyone else here know how to "play the percentages" on a football field?
From what I could see, it would seem our players have never heard of the term.
Turnovers are an issue, so is inaccuracy in front of goal, we have plenty of things to work on. But what frustrates me the most is the lack of defensive pressure when we don't have the ball. That 2nd qtr was just embarrassing.
I liked Armfields game, Ellard gives us nothing. 'Casey' had a good 1st game.
Seen nothing but absolutely rapt to hear Yarran smacked Chapman!
Man, today showed how much our game plan hurts us. We absolutely obliterated them in getting the ball out but once out it space we still have absolutely zero idea about how to create space or what to do with it.
Add to that the long bomb to 3 guys on one, usually to someone like Ellard and it's just frustrating because the coaches are not helping the players out. Good way to tank, I hope this is the case.
Jones showed a bit, Murphy coming good.
Gibbs has probably cost himself a week and God knows what Yarran will get. So next week is looking ugly.
We apparently had 4 or 5 0-3 starts to the year in our history prior to 2013, Pago owning one of them. Mick has managed to do a three-peat.
Big game for Mick next week.

Carlton to win the flag, says Lodsie - you heard it hear first :))
It was a beauty, sat him on his fat little ass.
He really didn't do that much after that.
I reckon we need to:
1. Never play Curnow and Carrazzo in the same side ever again.
2. Get some more midfield grunt in there (Whiley, Boekhurst, Johnson, Graham etc)
3. We need to open up with fwd line, its just fair too crowded. We need to Lachie and/or Jones one out more often, they will draw free kicks. The crowded chaos is masking the infringements on our fwds.
Seen nothing but absolutely rapt to hear Yarran smacked Chapman!
Only last week I was told by someone that Yarran is the best boxer at the club lol.
Only last week I was told by someone that Yarran is the best boxer at the club lol.
mbb, were you at the game ? If so, any thoughts ?
Henderson was scragged all day - no "blocking" or "chopping" frees at our end, funny about that. I'd play Walker at CHF and Jones on a wing... because he has zero idea where to run as a forward and looks better running with the ball in open play. Lost count of the amount of times he ran to where Henderson was and pulled his opponent to the contest, which made life bloody hard for Henderson with the second opponent over the top. Henderson looked very proppy at the end which is a worry. I don't know who our forward coach is but he needs to work on the leading patterns because Jones seems to want to run to where others are all the time instead of leading to locations from whence he can score. Its called separation guys.
Cripps is exactly as noted by NB followers - smart hands and nous inside but kicking is iffy. Had the chance to really hurt the scum on the scoreboard today.
Wood battled manfully -gets no help from the maggots and constantly scragged - coupled with some smart inside work it is a shame that we couldn't capitalise on this work as we have no outside run.
Thought Armfield gave us a bit of run and effort which we have been sorely lacking.
Smaller defenders did better under pressure and Rowe, although still average, showed some glimpses today. The way the ball came in at time it was hard being a defender today.
Murphy a lot better but possessions not hurting sides. Gibbs was excremental and he is rushing his kicks.
Was pleased to see Yazz stand up for himself and the boys made sure Goddard received plenty of treatment. There are some smart asses in that side who clearly need taking down a notch - a lot of sly stuff today, but you'd expect it from the juicers.
We can't continue to play Curnow and Carrazzo to play in the same team..... IMO
Not unless their form improves. They are important players for our midfield structure, but neither is near their best just at the moment. Curnow has been ordinary now for weeks. Carrots hasn't been able to shut guys down as well at the moment, but he is getting quite a few clearances. His form is considerably better than Curnow's at the moment.
mbb, were you at the game ? If so, any thoughts ?
I thought Walker and Armfield brought more run and Cripps was good in the middle. Still need more pace as the bombers killed us on the outside.

We cannot drop Carrazzo ahead of Curnow or Ellard, because it would be rewarding Ellard and Curnows poor form both who have been far less influential than Carrazzo, it sends the wrong messages!

Two games running we've sat Goddard on his ass. How did this unfold?
Two games running we've sat Goddard on his ass. How did this unfold?
Firstly, you're not allowed to hit Goddard too hard, remember McLean!
Secondly, he's a great actor, perhaps among the AFLs stop 3.
We don't sit anybody on their ar5e and especially not using Gibbs as the enforcer!
As for Chapman's 20 minutes off. It's typical of a bully, he had to go and hide somewhere to stop crying from someone actually standing up to the little prick! ;)
Good on Yazz, finally he's had enough of the sniper Chapman!
It's the best thing a few of our blokes could do this season, sets up a mindset for the future!
And FMD, Gibbs the enforcer! It's fecking embarrassing for Goddard! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
No, they clearly tried to put pressure on the lippy sod from what I saw. Gibbs committed to a charge (good old fashioned hip and shoulder) that landed on Goddard late, and his shoulder clipped Goddards ear, who sooked up big time and made sure all and sundry knew about it. He looked stunned that somebody actually had the temerity to line him up.
Didn't hurt him, can't see Gibbs getting rubbed out for it, though Watson et al. did the usual hatchet job.
Bitterly disappointed that Gibbs couldn't even lay the hip in properly... in fact I'd put it does as yet another clanger stat for him on the day.
One of those 0-3 starts was 1945 ;)
That included a 101pt defeat by the Bombers in round 3...lol.
TB4 was obviously around then too...lol.

Chris, how was the auction ?
I didnt expect to win...but when we came back in the last carrots had a critical moment on the half forward flank, if he executed a good kick to a player a goal would bring us in within 2 kicks...just a clear example these blokes have run their race ....time to move on these old players and rebuild.

Harsh, had 25 posses at 80% efficiency in a tagging role. He contributed today.

There would be a dozen or more others in the team who are first up for the kibosh today ahead of Carrazzo!
We wanted blokes to lift, and he was one who lifted, you must reward effort to send the right messages.
I haven't watched the game yet and listened on the radio. It looks like we mucked up many opportunities. Very poor kicking skills and shots on goal.

No worries - is she moving back to Greece ?
Today was much better, a glimmer of light.
We're still down on skill and we won't be going anywhere until we get a good tall forward but the boys scrapped hard and kept believing right until the bell.
We might have finally got a draft pick right, Cripps will be a good player.
Why is everyone so anti Ellard? I wasn't there but for a bloke who is short on pace, size, skill, he throws his weight around, cracks in hard and kicked a nice goal.
Shows a bit of leadership Too.
I agree we need better but he is far from our biggest issue.

Murph and gibbs arent leaders
Too many plodder
Carrots and simpson have run their race
I have been advocating another cleanout...

@Paul P
Haha in her dreams!
I rarely comment especially in post game threads, but always read. I only saw the first qtr due to going to a wedding and I'm yet to read through this thread, but Yaz whacking Chapman was gold. Fkck that guy. In a way I wish yaz handt hit him, and someone else had, cos I dont want him to miss. But it's good to see some fight. Chapman started the niggle and Yaz ended it. Shame we didnt win.
Oh - and btw, that horrific interfence/shepherding rule in marking contests will ruin this game. Those 2 decisions that went Essendon's way were absolute howlers.
On the money, Brettie. Can't see how Yarran can be pinged when he was dead centre of the drop-zone. No matter what he did with his positioning, it's up to others to get around him legally, not for him to invite them to mark. Only an ump having as bad a game as that one did couldn't see that. Put his whistle away too many times after that for mine, to our detriment, much as I hate potting the umps.
Much as I like Chappie as a player, he was asking for it. Sad no one nailed Melksham. What an embarrassment to the game he is.
Unfortunately, we are stuck with Jones for three-years. I made an early call on him and was howled down by many over it, it's only taken three games for him to display his inefficiencies.
He is a slightly shorter version of Casboult, can take a decent mark but is not reliable when kicking for goal (he is better than Levi but then again, so is my Grandmother). He doesn't work hard enough to win possession or present for the ball to be delivered to him, makes me angry because he was brought to the club for exactly that reason.
Many a Dogs supporter have told me that their biggest knock on him was that he had no second efforts, once beaten for the ball he just let it all go. At 198cm & 98kg, he has the bulk to be an imposing forward so why the hell doesn't he throw some weight around or crash some packs ??
Why is everyone so anti Ellard? I wasn't there but for a bloke who is short on pace, size, skill, he throws his weight around, cracks in hard and kicked a nice goal.
Shows a bit of leadership Too.
I agree we need better but he is far from our biggest issue.
Because he isnt up to it and hasnt been since day 1 and should be off the list.....
For me the only thing that let us down today were our skills. That last kick and our kicking for goal hurt us.
We actually killed them at the stoppages and the contested ball but couldnt finish them off!
Did anyone see the attendance figure for the game? There seemed to be huge gaps in the crowd almost all around the stands.

Official crowd: 54,854 at the MCG

Thanks K. Pretty low on past crowds numbers? There didn't seem to be much of an atmosphere either, although I was watching on TV from the comfort of my couch.

Says more about others than it does him IMHO.
Yarran was silly, undisciplined and will cost the team by his non-appearance next week(s)
And it was probably a great moment for Carlton folk because it was one of the rare bits of fight we've shown in the last decade where we've actually come out on top.
We have to develop a reputation of not being intimidated and folding when the pressure is applied.
I guess we just need to find that balance where we don't go that bit too far.
Because he isnt up to it and hasnt been since day 1 and should be off the list.....
Sad but true. If a few other blokes had his ticker...
When Slug, even though playing well in the twos, can't get a game, we know we're beginning to make progress.
Also, was good to see Dangles (Den Den) in the Seniors, his ability to get to contests through speed is something our forward line has missed. Still amazed he wasn't the sub ahead of Smith for the first two rounds. Yes, I know his disposal can be an issue at times, but his attack at the contest is something we've not seen since Robbo. And we desperately need blokes with that kind of passion for the contest and attack at the aggott.
According to Chappy it was "crap punch". Well it sat you on your ass like a bag of wet excrement.

Yep, why throw your best when a crap one 'll more than do the job. :D

Huh? What does that have to do with him still being on the list Thry? The bloke is in his eighth (yes eighth) season and is still to cement a spot in the side and he's still on the list. Same with Armfield. Just poor poor list management.
Punch happened right in front of me. Didn't lood like a site punch to me. :P

What a stupid thing for Chappy to say, he looked like he was going to cry after he was dumped on his dot! Clown.
Anyone think Yarran should challenge whatever penalty they give him ;D
Yeah...Nuh!
Move on.
I know Yarran's actions were undisciplined but I am quite pleased that he threw the punch. Yes, he will miss weeks but it's well past the time for our blokes to stand up for themselves. Yarran's future opponents may think twice about trying to rough him up.
Similarly, I was happy with Gibbs' decision to go through with the late bump on Goddard, and the high contact. He may miss a week but it will be worth it.
We need more blokes to show a bit of controlled aggression and make opponents just a little apprehansive.
I'd personally like to see a 'line in the sand' game against the 'line in the sand' kings in Hawthorn. I don't even care of we don't win, I just want to see us fight back against their bullying of us for the last 10 years in the same manner that they did against the scum.

Unfortunately, Yarran's actions were anything but 'controlled' aggression!!

True but I have no doubt that he was reacting to 'Crapmans' actions, it was pretty out of character forr Yarran to lose control. Lets hope he gets 2 weeks reduce to 1 for good behaviour and he can play agains Collingwood.

I don't think we'll find out what Crapman did to provoke this, one of those things likely to stay on the field. One thing is for sure, Yazz had to have been severely provoked - well IMO at least.

The fact the fat little c@#$ had to take a concussion test, doubt the penalty will be light. Here's hoping though.
That was a strategic ploy to buy time so chappy could get attention and they could maintain their rotations.

And put Yarran in a worse light at the same time? Norf demonstrated that ploy with Juddy.

Wont look good for Yarran though. Anyway, a sacrifice I am willing to accept, still sent a message. I'm tipping Chappy would be there angriest hard assed player. When they saw him on his ass early, they all thought in their minds "these guys are gonna take any sh#t today". I liked it. Wouldnt mind Yazz sitting that sniping pr!ck Hodge on his ass either. Or that wanna be Lewis.

Ellard is the same proposition as those state league players everyone wanted to recruit.
He is a depth player who has survived on our list through the sheer mismanagement of our list and our clubs inability to bring through top notch draftees, and develop them appropriately.
Yesterday he kicked a very important goal from an acute angle to bring us back into touching distance, and is an honest performer who's worst footy is usually good enough. He was one who won his contest against West Coast.
I grade Ellard on a sliding scale. He isn't a great player but has forged a pretty good career for himself and actually plays for the jumper and his mates.
Think about this, if he is so bad, what does it say about the rest of the guys we have gotten rid of? Clearly Ellard wants to be here and does whatever he can to help, and that is important to consider in the scheme of things. His tackle on a big man yesterday was good to watch.

I get your point, but this is a ruthless, cut throat industry that has no room for sentiment. Ellard has had his chance, and he han't been held back by injury or been unlucky. He's proven to not be up to it.
I don't have a problem with Lewis, he is a damn hard competitor who normally makes the ball the main object. Personally I'd have offered him a million a year and the captaincy to come across. Don't get me started on the other sniper though.
Look, I'm not condoning on field violence but there has been stuff happening around the edges ("gamesmanship") for a long time... and the juicers have been masters at it going back to the 1980's. Invariably we've been on the wrong end of it. Chappy has been one that has thrived on dishing out jumper punches and umpire bothering until he gets what he wants.... basically an on field bully. Carlton is the cleanest, least aggressive list in the AFL and I for one am pleased that somebody actually pushed back for once. Yes it was ill disciplined and beating them on the scoreboard is the ultimate revenge but enough's enough.... maybe it was line in the sand day?

x2....Yarran showed he wont cop it from an old player trying to take shortcuts by being a thug and it cost might him a week or two but at least
we showed we wont be bullied..he should have whacked Melksham as well...dirty little no talent sniper that he is was elbowing running into our blokes all day
and its time to get Richie Vandenberg down to the club next Essendon game and show our list how its done..hello to Adam Mcphee and Andrew Welsh.
Ellard is not doing enough to keep his spot, when we have Whiley, Boekhurst and Graham playing well in the VFL.

Yes, agree, especially if a side is going to rebuild.
From what I saw I didn't get any "light at the end of the tunnel" feeling. To me it was same old, same old.
Wood was my BOG till he tired in the last, Juddy had to show everyone how it was done with 3 opposition players on his back, and Cripps and Docherty showed they are the future.
Byrne's first game was depressing because his 3 or 4 kicks were purposeful, effective, constructive, AND ACCURATE. This from a kid who didn't grow up playing the code. Yet time and time again, as has been the pattern now for 10 years, his senior clubmates turned the ball over at crucial times with poorly thought out actions or reactions.
Watching it on TV I was disgusted at how often there would be a Carlton player closest to a 'free' footy yet a Juiced up Fruit Loop would come diving in from nowhere to take possession relegating the formerly closest Blues player to a spectator. The player we all know who CANNOT be tarred with this brush is Simmo. But, it pains me to say it, Kade's decision making and disposal at crucial times is deplorable. As others have pointed out before - we either have players with no heart who have silky skills, or bull terriers with no skills.
Even Yarran's haymaker, which is being lauded by some, was a lazy act. Much rather see him put his body on the line when there's no hope of him gaining a stat but which will benefit the team in some other way. CheatsFC are pathetic. It was unacceptable to lose to this mob.

I agree re. the longer term but I reckon he was probably good enough to hold on for next week. His eye-catching goal from the boundary would have certainly helped his cause.
Chris, how was the auction ?
Perhaps a question which could've been asked via PM perhaps? FMD.......
How was dinner last night? Just thought I'd ask......
Unfortunately, Yarran's actions were anything but 'controlled' aggression!!
Agree - but I thought it was going too far in the Hun this morning when he was called an imbecile in the 'What's Hot - What's Not' centre page spread of the sports section. Thought that was poor.
Ellard brought good defensive pressure.

Didnt Ellard play on Hibberd?....
The fact that the MC considers Slug to be in our best 22 is precisely the problem. He is in our best 22 because we have no depth, no one else to take his place. Whether he's a good player, whether he would get a game anywhere else, is irrelevant.
No amount of playing kids etc. will change that. He's not great, but there's not much else.
Ellard brought good defensive pressure.
Along with Mick's other 21 taggers, but it shouldn't save him because he has failed two games in a row and kids in the NBs are playing OK.

Went to Maccaroni Trattoria Italiana in the city. Cramped, wait staff had soem issues but food was pretty great thanks. Yours?

Dunno her name, but the one who sat on Watson yesterday did an outstanding job.
So outstanding that he keep Watson to 36 possessions, otherwise it would have been 46.

Ellard had Shannon Hurn on toast against West Coast.
Was another honest effort yesterday. Did okay.
You don't drop blokes doing the right things just because.
Sends the wrong message.
