Yeah, absolutely...the kicker is a protected species...the bloke on the mark is his direct opponent & should be allowed to stand the mark, & respond to play on attempts without being immediately impeded.
There's an easy fix. THE MAN ON THE MARK MUST STAY ON THE MARK. He can jump up and down but must not be allowed to move laterally at all. He is protected by a 5m no go zone for opposition players. As soon as the player with the ball moves off his line, umpire calls play on and away we go.
The umpire was moving into Curnow's personal space. Curnow was moving away. It was a defensive action. Hawkins moved towards the umpire and was remonstrating. His was an act of aggression. THEREIN LIES THE DIFFERENCE. The media has made it all about touching the umpire which is too simplistic.
We pick two rucks again for what reason again. For all his hard work Phillips just doesn't give you enough around the ground or up forward. We can pick a smaller running type instead. and be alot more mobile.
Our ability to structure a side for modern footy is hopeless. We need to pick our two key backs when fit, Weitering and Marchbank, our key forward, McKay, Casboult as a forward/ruck, Kreuzer the one main ruck then pick a decent running side around that rather than a side from the land of the jolly green giants.
Why can Fraser use SOS as an inside mid in two games now and Bolton leaves him to rot on our impotent forward line. Give him a run there sometimes. It'll help his confidence like it does Levi when he gets to have a run in the ruck. Levi seems to lose alot of confidence when he's a full time forward. He's not going to be a 50 goal forward, he's a forward/ruck.
There's nobody in form at the Northern Blues that fits that role. Now, LeBois is out for an extended period too.
I'd be sending Jack back, Jones has a limited life span imo, SOSOS is the obvious replacement down there. And if I see one more defender spoil one of ours who is trying to mark the aggott........
At 1/2-time we almost doubled them in the ruck for clearances and hitouts to advantage, by the end of the game they had almost doubled our match totals. We hardly added a ruck stat in several critical areas after 1/2-Time, and that was mostly Lycett giving them the momentum.
I was at the game and I viewed it from Level 2 of the Northern Stand. There were no commentators or biased influencers around me. I thought Phillips competed very strongly throughout the whole game and I was surprised that he was able to run out the 4 quarters. Much of what he did didn't trouble the statisticians BUT he did make room for Cripps, Dow and Fisher to gather the ball on several occasions. The fact that Natanui wasn't able to dominate was due in part to Phillips' competitiveness.
I can think of one or two past players, but agree. Should be a Carlton man
Name one coach who has won a flag in the past 10 years with his original club. The last were Roos and Worsfold in 2005 and 2006. Hardwick, Beveridge, Clarkson, Scott, Malthouse and Longmire all played with different clubs to the ones they coached to a premiership. Think also Parkin, Matthews, Sheedy, et. al. Bringing in a ‘Carlton man’ is folly.
