Robert Heatley Stand / Re: RD 17 : Blues Defeat Kangaroos (After-Match Defibrillators)
That last over commitment you mention Raydan is the reason why we coughed up many easy goals.  Too ball focussed and not playimg the percentages.  Win the contest or lose the contest.  It seems that our players dont realise that stalemate is an option nor do they understand the benefit of a tactical retreat.  Petrie taking marks 60+ out from goal is a mini win.

If their is a late change I'd expect Robbo followed by Laidler or Bootsma.

Based on yesterdays training that would surprise me.  laidler and Bootsma were not with the main group.

Menzel is more likely, as is casboult.  I have a feeling that MM will go tall and play both Rowe and Casboult in the forward line, and Lachie might actually play CHB this week.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: 2013 - the year our best players went AWOL
I wont roll out stats, I think you just have to look at how he polls in the "jim park medal" thread.

Realistically that seems a better indication of how valuable a contributer he has been, where people put him amongst the best 5 players.

There are very few players in the AFL that can single handedly turn a game of football.

This season, Kreuzer has had an inffluence (according to the mixed opinions that we see on here) in games of football.  These might not have translated into wins but he has had a decent year, and we all agree there is more that he could be giving us.  Lets not forget he has missed games through injury too.  The important part to remember, that his relief staff have all had very limited ratings by comparison, with Robert Warnock coming closest given the games played vs votes achieved scenario.

Carrotts, I will agree to disagree with you.

I dont believe that either of them have influenced as many games as anyone thinks.  Its always the usual suspects leading us to victory and that has been my major knock on this football club for a long time now.

You have to remember, Kreuzer can win his position, but if our midfield gets smashed he appears to have had a bad game. Yarran doesnt even have to win his direct battle to be considered as having taken a game by the scruff of the neck.

Personally, I dont really care much for individuals taking our teams to victory, as I think that this is what has bothered me about our side since the turn of the century.  We used to have good teams, now we have good players, and this is the first time where it seems as though its the unit doing the work.

What I would be interested in finding out, are the answers to the following questions:

How frequently since the inception of the sub rule, have we been forced to make that change through injury as opposed to our opponents who have been able to use theirs tactically?

How frequently have we won having to sub early?

How frequently have we ended up losing another player to injury after having subbed early?

I would love to see a comparison across all teams too and this might give us a clearer picture on why some games get lost.

One hand? One finger. Port Adelaide in 2008.

See i have a problem with this vein of thinking.  There are things that Matthew has in his game that makes you happy to have him every week, just we dont see it all game every game.  Most likely due to him having had his injury woes.

The second efforts, the blocking his ability to link up in play all of it is good we just wish it would happen more frequently.

Chris Yarran is roughly the same in his ability to impact a game.  He makes you go wow sometimes and other times is a complete non event.

Gibbs too.

Its all a bit of soft target bashing anyway as you would find more players that have had fewer dominant games in their age group with the inverse largely being the exception and not the rule.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Reshape & Remodel Watson = The Spine Is Stronger Overall
IF its all about the process, Watson plays this week.  No point dropping him for four points when they are not guaranteed anyway and we can find out some information about what he can and cant do, and this could be the information that makes the penny drop with him.

Some players need no light bulb moment, some need multiple.

Because the last decade has taught us the following;

1.  Playing opposition who we always struggle to beat, even at our best (in this case because we arrogantly regarded them as an irrelevant club and tried to buy them to get their players).
2.  Playing an opposition that we match up poorly against.  They have a real ruck, proper structure and three tall forwards.
3.  Playing opposition that physically intimidate us, sometimes with dog tactics, but generally they just play basic football that is too much for our seagulls.  Goldstein, Swallow, Firrito and Petrie et al. treat us with contempt.
4.  Playing opposition that were woeful last week, have been baked in media and thus have point to prove.
5.  Big game with high stakes - winner is a chance of finals, loser is playing for draft pick position.  We never, ever win those games.
6.  Friday night game, so they want to play well to showcase their club.
7.  Also Friday night, which means we'll probably get Ray.  Ray + the diver = not a good night.

All equals an unsatisfactory result for us - the script is so familiar that it a cliché.

Last year we were crippled with injury when we played them, I think we lost Tuohy in the warm up, and Walker and Joseph were injured and subbed off during the game (someone can confirm I was overseas). Ratts was criticised heavily after this loss too for some reason. This year we have almost a full list to choose from. No excuses.

Murphy's first game back from that shoulder injury against Adelaide.
Tuohy was a late change in the warmup.  Lucas came in for him.
Walker subbed off for a calf staring about 3/4 into the first for Lucas.
Moving Henderson from forward to back, is the move that killed Ratten this game.  Hendo tweaked the hamstring chasing, but this was a move he made reactionary to Walker going off (and the one that I believe cost him his job as it was one way traffice from that point onwards) and he put Duigan forward after that.
Joseph was concussed halfway through the second.

Kreuzer pulled up lame from this one with that mystery leg injury that plagued him last season and was our only ruck vs North that game.

His coaching performance was too focussed on containing Petrie, who was given 3 goals by the umpires (from memory).

Should have left Henderson forward, might have saved his career.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: Development and Recruiting
I just had an idea, its a bit bold, and many wont like it, but Im going to float it anyway.

In the event that we do trade away Hampson and Warnock, would anyone else think that Koschitzke would be of any value to us?

Would come for nothing at least.

Even if he did cost us nothing, my answer would still be NO.

Any reason why?

From where I sit, he comes to us and becomes our 3rd best key forward and the only key forward on our list to have played in a grand final.  Think about how Geelong used Brad Ottens in his last couple of years at the cattery.

Robert Heatley Stand / Re: RD 16 : Blues Smack Saints (Aftermatch Review)
I really like Cachia.  Reckon he will grow into a significant contributer in our midfield.  I think he is our long term replacement for Carrots, in that he gets lots of the ball, makes good decisions, can stop an opponent and is pretty good at hurting them the other way.  Best part, is he was unselfish in dishing off a goal to Garlett when he had every right to go back and kick from about 35-40 out on Saturday night.

Cant wait till they are firing on all cylinders.

Did anyone notice that Lucas went into defensive fifty to free up Simpson to give us a bit more run and spread just after half time?

I think he is quite underated Lucas and might actually be a really good outside player for us in future.  We have an aging list of mids, and I was getting a bit worried about it earlier this year, but some of these guys are kicking on for us and becoming contributers.  Hopefully they can all go up a level and start to look like genuine A graders.

Also, Im not sure about how everyone else saw the game, but I thought Judd was not as prominent as everyone else has put him in being our "clearly" best player.  I just thought he was one of many that did well on the day.
